Book Corporate Capital Structures in the United States

Download or read book Corporate Capital Structures in the United States written by Benjamin M. Friedman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research reported in this volume represents the second stage of a wide-ranging National Bureau of Economic Research effort to investigate "The Changing Role of Debt and Equity in Financing U.S. Capital Formation." The first group of studies sponsored under this project, which have been published individually and summarized in a 1982 volume bearing the same title (Friedman 1982), addressed several key issues relevant to corporate sector behavior along with such other aspects of the evolving financial underpinnings of U.S. capital formation as household saving incentives, international capital flows, and government debt management. In the project's second series of studies, presented at the National Bureau of Economic Research conference in January 1983 and published here for the first time along with commentaries from that conference, the central focus is the financial side of capital formation undertaken by the U.S. corporate business sector. At the same time, because corporations' securities must be held, a parallel focus is on the behavior of the markets that price these claims.

Book Valuation Approaches and Metrics

Download or read book Valuation Approaches and Metrics written by Aswath Damodaran and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2005 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valuation lies at the heart of much of what we do in finance, whether it is the study of market efficiency and questions about corporate governance or the comparison of different investment decision rules in capital budgeting. In this paper, we consider the theory and evidence on valuation approaches. We begin by surveying the literature on discounted cash flow valuation models, ranging from the first mentions of the dividend discount model to value stocks to the use of excess return models in more recent years. In the second part of the paper, we examine relative valuation models and, in particular, the use of multiples and comparables in valuation and evaluate whether relative valuation models yield more or less precise estimates of value than discounted cash flow models. In the final part of the paper, we set the stage for further research in valuation by noting the estimation challenges we face as companies globalize and become exposed to risk in multiple countries.

Currently, more than half of managed assets in Europe are linked to ESG factors, while in Japan, ESG investment has grown dramatically in recent years. In principle, ESG investment can help to bridge the gap between profit-driven investment and economic and social sustainability in Asia and the Pacific. However, a number of challenges, such as unclear and varied sustainable investment criteria, untested impacts on corporate value and social issues, and the lack of quality data cloud the potential for increasing ESG investment. Book Financial Institutions Markets and Services

Download or read book Financial Institutions Markets and Services written by Dr. SADASIVAM RANI and published by Academic Guru Publishing House. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into the structure, operation, and expansion of India’s financial system. For students of finance and money management, gaining a thorough understanding of how the financial system functions is crucial for effectively analyzing and comprehending monetary and financial policies. The first edition of this book provides a comprehensive view of the entire landscape of banking and non-banking institutions, as well as the various markets for both short-term and long-term financial instruments and services. It covers significant issues within the Indian financial system, such as financial inclusion, the new pension system, insurance principles, the auctioning of treasury bills, and foreign direct investment in India’s retail sector. In addition, the book offers an in-depth analysis of derivatives, including their role in the global economy, market design, major policy changes, and the development of the derivatives market both in India and internationally. Recent financial reforms and current trends in the Indian financial industry are highlighted to reflect the latest developments. The evolution of a sophisticated financial system in India, especially since the early 1990s, has also led to the growth of a robust financial services sector. The efficiency of this emerging system is closely linked to the quality and range of financial services offered by non-banking financial companies, which, although still developing, are increasingly significant to the financial system. Financial services are broadly categorized into fund/asset-based and fee-based/advisory services, and this book addresses both categories. While focusing on the analytical aspects from the perspectives of both non-banking financial intermediaries and their clients, the book also thoroughly examines legal, procedural, tax, accounting, and regulatory dimensions. To facilitate learning and assessment, the text includes illustrative problems and review questions. A distinctive feature of the book is its blend of theoretical and practical insights into the contemporary Indian financial services sector. It is intended primarily for educators and advanced students in finance, management, commerce, and accounting, but it also serves as a valuable resource for practicing professionals. The book provides an overview of non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) as regulated by the RBI, including theoretical, conceptual, and regulatory aspects of lease financing and other fund-based services. It also covers legal, analytical, and regulatory facets of hire purchase finance, consumer credit, and the institutional and operational framework of merchant banking in India. The analysis extends to prominent merchant banking activities, such as mergers and acquisitions, stock broking, and credit rating.

Book Accounting and the Investment Opportunity Set

Download or read book Accounting and the Investment Opportunity Set written by Ahmed Riahi-Belkaoui and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-05-30 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A firm's value consists of its assets-in-place and growth opportunities: its investment opportunity set. IOS plays a major role in determining a firm's corporate and accounting strategies, and how the marketplace reacts to them. Riahi-Belkaoui shows how IOS can be examined, measured, and used as one way to understand the various accounting and nonaccounting strategies espoused by management. His book fills a gap in the literature on this timely and provocative topic, and provides useful knowledge for upper management, academics, and graduate-level students. The importance of the IOS concept is beginning to be acknowledged in the literature of empirical accounting, finance, and management. There, the investment opportunity set is introduced as an explanatory or moderating variable of the relationship between accounting and economic phenomena and various predictor variables. Riahi-Belkaoui explicates a concept of growth opportunities or IOS (Chapter 1) and provides a general model for its measurement (Chapter 2). He shows its role in a general valuation model based on dividend yield and price earnings ratio (Chapter 3), in the relationship between profitability and multinationality (Chapter 4), in the determination of capital structure (Chapter 5), in a general model of international production (Chapter 6), in a general model of corporate disclosure (Chapter 7), in the relationship between systematic risk and multinationality (Chapter 8), in a model of reputation building (Chapter 9), and earnings management (Chapter 10). He goes on to discuss its role in explaining the relative market value compared to the accounting value of a multinational firm in Chapter 11, and in differentiating between the usefulness of accrual and cash flow based on valuation models in Chapter 12.
