Book Speech and Sociability at French Urban Marketplaces

Download or read book Speech and Sociability at French Urban Marketplaces written by Jacqueline Lindenfeld and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is both particularistic and generalizing. At one level it can be seen as an investigation of French urban marketplaces as systems of communication, with a microscopic examination of verbal interaction and sociability patterns in a specific cultural setting. At another level it constitutes an attempt to show some relationships between the ethnography of communication, urban anthropology and symbolic interactionism: all three lines of inquiry converge here to highlight the social and symbolic dimensions of traditional street markets in modern urban France, with primary focus on the role of speech in sociability. A major source of inspiration is interactional sociolinguistics which considers language as an activity performed by social actors for specific purposes.

Book The speech of Pope Urban II 1095 at Clermont in the versions of the Gesta Francorum and Baldric of Dol

Download or read book The speech of Pope Urban II 1095 at Clermont in the versions of the Gesta Francorum and Baldric of Dol written by Diana Beuster and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-07-13 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Latin philology - Medivial and Modern Latin, grade: Gut (B), Indiana University (Department for Classical Studies), course: Readings of Medieval Latin, language: English, abstract: At the council of Clermont, a mixed synod of ecclesiastics and laymen of the Catholic Church, Pope Urban II delivered his most famous address which led thousands of knights and ordinary people to take the cross and march to the East, what is considered to be the begin of the Crusades. Several versions of this famous speech have come to us, and among the most important and most cited versions of the speech are the one of Baldric of Dol and the version of the Gesta Francorum by an anonymous author. By comparing these two versions of the speech we are able to extract the reflections of the speech and the following events by every single author, which is inevitable for answering the question whether the Crusades were a spontaneous response to the Council of Clermont or a long and carefully developed plan for the conquest of the East.

Book Oral History and Delinquency

Download or read book Oral History and Delinquency written by James Bennett and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1988-01-15 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Henry Mayhew's classic study of Victorian slums to Studs Terkel's presentations of ordinary people in modern America, oral history has been used to call attention to social conditions. By analyzing the nature and circumstances of the production of such histories of delinquency, James Bennett argues that oral history is a rhetorical device, consciously chosen as such, and is to be understood in terms of its persuasive powers and aims. Bennett shows how oral or life histories of juvenile delinquents have been crucial in communicating the human traits of offenders within their social context, to attract interest in resources for programs to prevent delinquency. Although life history helped to establish the discipline of sociology, Bennett suggests concepts for understanding oral histories generated in many fields.
