Myers, who most carefully read through both manuscript and proofs, making many valuable suggestions to the great improvement of the text. To Mr C. L. Burt, who kindly read through the proofs, I am indebted for numerous emendations. My thanks are also due to Miss C. M. Ryley, whose friendly criticism has helped to remove much that was obscure or confused in expression. Lastly, I must thank Mr T. Cunningham for permitting me to consult him at considerable length on the subject of hormones, and their possible role in inciting to functional activity the periodic instincts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind in Animals I t will naturally be understood that the narrowing of the subject to a relatively small field of Animal Psychology compels the author to use only a very small number out of the many hundreds of facts and observations on the intel lectual life of animals, which have been sent to him from all parts of the world in answer to his public request, and for which he here again returns his public acknowledgment; further, the greater number of these communications give the result, as might be expected, of daily and private observa tions on the more accessible animals. The author therefore ventures to refer his respected correspondents to a later work from his own pen which, as compared with the present book, undertakes a far wider task. He will therein endeavor, by means of a psychological classification, to trace the dif forent affections and manifestations of man's emotional and intellectual life throughout the great circles of the animal world. Here also most of the communications will be found under the names of the several observers, and the author trusts that this will be accepted as his personal acknowledg ment for individual help. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Animal Mind: A d104-Book of Comparative Psychology The advance of comparative psychology during the past nine years has been remarkable. In preparing a second edition of this book I have tried to include every newly discovered fact of the first importance, but the literature is now so extensive that in order to keep the bibliography within reasonable limits, I have had to exer cise more selection than I did in preparing the bibliography for the first edition. For like reasons, the text of the book does not enter so fully into detail in describing the results of a particular investigation as was possible when the material at hand was so much less in amount. More than half the book has been completely rewritten, including the chapters on Vision, on Spatially Determined Reactions, and on The Modification of Conscious Pro cesses by Individual Experience. I hope that the edition represents an advance upon its predecessor, not only by including many newly ascertained facts, but also by pre senting its subject matter in more logical form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Intelligence: Experimental Studies It has seemed best to leave the texts unaltered except for the correction of typographical errors, renumbering of tables and figures, and redrawing the latter. In a few places, where the original text has been found likely to be misunderstood, brief notes have been added. It is hard to resist the impulse to temper the style, especially of the Animal Intelligence, ' with a certain sobriety and restraint. What one writes at the age of twenty-three is likely to irritate oneself a dozen years later, as it doubt less irritated others at the time. The charitable reader may allay his irritation by the thought that a degree of exuberance, even of arrogance, is proper to youth. Download or read book Animal Minds written by Donald R. Griffin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Animal Minds, Donald R. Griffin takes us on a guided tour of the recent explosion of scientific research on animal mentality. Are animals consciously aware of anything, or are they merely living machines, incapable of conscious thoughts or emotional feelings? How can we tell? Such questions have long fascinated Griffin, who has been a pioneer at the forefront of research in animal cognition for decades, and is recognized as one of the leading behavioral ecologists of the twentieth century. With this new edition of his classic book, which he has completely revised and updated, Griffin moves beyond considerations of animal cognition to argue that scientists can and should investigate questions of animal consciousness. Using examples from studies of species ranging from chimpanzees and dolphins to birds and honeybees, he demonstrates how communication among animals can serve as a "window" into what animals think and feel, just as human speech and nonverbal communication tell us most of what we know about the thoughts and feelings of other people. Even when they don't communicate about it, animals respond with sometimes surprising versatility to new situations for which neither their genes nor their previous experiences have prepared them, and Griffin discusses what these behaviors can tell us about animal minds. He also reviews the latest research in cognitive neuroscience, which has revealed startling similarities in the neural mechanisms underlying brain functioning in both humans and other animals. Finally, in four chapters greatly expanded for this edition, Griffin considers the latest scientific research on animal consciousness, pro and con, and explores its profound philosophical and ethical implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Intelligence: Experimental Studies The main purpose of this volume is to make accessible to students of psychology and biology the author's experimental studies of animal intellect and behavior. These studies have, I am informed by teachers of comparative psychology, a twofold interest. Since they represent the first deliberate and extended application of the experimental method in animal psychology, they are a useful introduction to the later literature of that subject. They mark the change from books of general argumentation on the basis of common experience interpreted in terms of the faculty psychology, to monographs reporting detailed and often highly technical experiments interpreted in terms of original and acquired connections between situation and response. Since they represent the point of view and the method of present animal psychology, but in the case of very general and simple problems, they are useful also as readings for students who need a general acquaintance with some sample of experimental work in this field.
