Book The Investigating Meaning Purpose and Connectedness IMPACT Study

Download or read book The Investigating Meaning Purpose and Connectedness IMPACT Study written by Michelle Madeleine Clark and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schizophrenia is a chronic and disabling disease that causes significant stress for a family from the time of onset throughout the individual’s life. For families with members who live with schizophrenia, spirituality can be a source of support and help caregivers manage stress. While holistic nursing care of patients and families with schizophrenia includes addressing spiritual needs, spirituality is often not incorporated into nursing care due to a lack of understanding and confidence of nurses. There has been little research to understand the spiritual needs of parent caregivers of adult children with schizophrenia. The purpose of this comparative case study was to answer the question: “How do parent caregivers of adult children with schizophrenia renegotiate their spirituality, defined as life meaning/purpose and connectedness, in the years following the onset of the illness?” A comparative case study approach was used. Participants were recruited from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Northeast Ohio and social media. Snowball sampling was also used to recruit participants. Eligibility criteria included the ability to speak and understand English, having an adult child with schizophrenia, and consenting to be interviewed via Zoom videoconferencing technology on a phone or computer. Three in-depth interviews were conducted with six participants, and artifacts were documented. Cases were analyzed individually using thematic analysis and across cases to identify similarities and differences. Three persons were interviewed, all white women between the ages of 57 and 73. When one participant was unable to complete the interview series, another was recruited. Primary themes from the interviews were conflict/peace, disconnectedness/connectedness, real/ideal, and despair/hope. Ancillary themes were related to the participants’ personal values and beliefs and included the role of mother/parent/provider and personal religious beliefs. This study provided a deeper understanding of the process of renegotiating spirituality that can inform future nursing research exploring best ways to support for families with children who live with schizophrenia. This better understanding of family processes and needs can inform development of family-targeted, nurse-led programs to provide more individualized and holistic care to families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of School Violence and School Safety: International Research and Practice has become the premier resource for educational and mental health professionals and policymakers seeking to implement effective prevention and intervention programs that reduce school violence and promote safe and effective schools. It covers the full range of school violence and safety topics from harassment and bullying to promoting safe, secure, and peaceful schools. It also examines existing school safety programs and includes the multi-disciplinary research and theories that guide them. Examinations of current issues and projections of future research and practice are embedded within each chapter. This volume maps the boundaries of this rapidly growing and multidisciplinary field of study. Key features include... Comprehensive Coverage – The chapters are divided into three parts: Foundations; Assessment and Measurement; Prevention and Intervention Programs. Together they provide a comprehensive review of what is known about the types, causes, and effects of school violence and the most effective intervention programs that have been developed to prevent violence and promote safe and thriving school climates. Evidence-based Practice – Avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach to prevention and intervention, the focus throughout is on the application of evidence-based practice to address factors most commonly associated with school violence and safety. Implications for Practice – Each chapter bridges the research-to-practice gap, with a section delineating implications for practice of the foregoing research. Chapter Structure – To ensure continuity and coherence across the book, each chapter begins with a brief abstract and ends with a table showing the implications for practice. International Focus – Acknowledging the fact that school violence and safety is a global concern, this edition has increased its focus on insights learned from cross-national research and practice outside the USA. Expertise – The editors and authors are experienced researchers, teachers, practitioners, and leaders in the school violence field, their expertise includes their breadth and depth of knowledge and experience, bridging research, policy, and practice and representing a variety of international organizations studying school violence around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relational-Cultural theory (RCT) proposes that all people grow through and toward relationships throughout the lifespan. RCT challenges prevailing theories that depict the "separate self" as the hallmark of maturity. Rather than movement toward autonomy and separation, RCT suggests we develop ever more differentiated ways of connecting. An increase in growth-fostering relationships results in: a sense of vitality and zest; increasing clarity about ourselves and others; augmented creativity and ability to take action; an experience of worth and empowerment; and a desire for more connectedness with others. Disconnections are inevitable in relationships and RCT focuses on relational resilience, the ways people can re-establish positive and growth-fostering relationships. RCT further emphasizes the importance of cultural and societal forces in causing either growth-fostering connection or destructive disconnection. This volume explores the process of change in therapy and in other relationships; how race and other forms of stratification create pain; and how people develop resilience and strength in relationships characterized by mutuality. This book was based on a special issue of Women and Therapy.

Book Local Politics Global Impacts

Download or read book Local Politics Global Impacts written by Olivier Charnoz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serving as a touchstone for a much-needed research program on social scales, this volume challenges disciplinary boundaries and brings into focus a paradoxical state of affairs in contemporary thought: the domain of local-global interactions has not yet been identified as an object of analysis in its own right, despite engaging a large, multi-disciplinary research community with strong potential for cross-fertilization. Bringing together internationally renowned as well as emerging scholars, this book presents concrete case studies framed by theoretical concern with the issue of scale. It demonstrates that a diverse array of theoretical, methodological and empirical perspectives can productively converge on a common set of problems related to social, temporal and spatial scales and contemporary globalization. Local Politics, Global Impacts will stimulate empirical and theoretical research that focuses on understanding how political concepts, practices, and instruments translate across scales, and contribute to the emergence of a self-aware community of scholars and practitioners focusing explicitly on modelling the dynamics of local-regional-global interactions.

Book Making the Connection

Download or read book Making the Connection written by Marilyn Paula Carlson and published by MAA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume convey insights from mathematics education research that have direct implications for anyone interested in improving teaching and learning in undergraduate mathematics. This synthesis of research on learning and teaching mathematics provides relevant information for any math department or individual faculty member who is working to improve introductory proof courses, the longitudinal coherence of precalculus through differential equations, students' mathematical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and students' understanding of fundamental ideas such as variable and rate of change. Other chapters include information about programs that have been successful in supporting students' continued study of mathematics. The authors provide many examples and ideas to help the reader infuse the knowledge from mathematics education research into mathematics teaching practice. University mathematicians and community college faculty spend much of their time engaged in work to improve their teaching. Frequently, they are left to their own experiences and informal conversations with colleagues to develop new approaches to support student learning and their continuation in mathematics. Over the past 30 years, research in undergraduate mathematics education has produced knowledge about the development of mathematical understandings and models for supporting students' mathematical learning. Currently, very little of this knowledge is affecting teaching practice. We hope that this volume will open a meaningful dialogue between researchers and practitioners toward the goal of realizing improvements in undergraduate mathematics curriculum and instruction.
