Book The Invention of the White Race Volume 2

Download or read book The Invention of the White Race Volume 2 written by Theodore W. Allen and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, Martin Luther King outlined a dream of an America where people would not be judged by the color of their skin. That dream has yet to be realized, but some three centuries ago it was a reality. Back then, neither social practice nor law recognized any special privileges in connection with being white. But by the early decades of the eighteenth century, that had all changed. Racial oppression became the norm in the plantation colonies, and African Americans suffered under its yoke for more than two hundred years. In Volume II of The Invention of the White Race, Theodore Allen explores the transformation that turned African bond-laborers into slaves and segregated them from their fellow proletarians of European origin. In response to labor unrest, where solidarities were not determined by skin color, the plantation bourgeoisie sought to construct a buffer of poor whites, whose new racial identity would protect them from the enslavement visited upon African Americans. This was the invention of the white race, an act of cruel ingenuity that haunts America to this day. Allen's acclaimed study has become indispensable in debates on the origins of racial oppression in America. In this updated edition, scholar Jeffrey B. Perry provides a new introduction, a select bibliography and a study guide.

Book The King of Inventors

Download or read book The King of Inventors written by Catherine Peters and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major biography, Catherine Peters explores the complicated life of Wilkie Collins, the greatest of the Victorian "Sensation" novelists and author of the famous Woman in White and The Moonstone. An intimate of Dickens and of the Pre-Raphaelites Holman Hunt and Millais, Collins was called the "king of inventors" by his publisher. On the surface, he was charming, unpretentious, and extremely good company, beloved by men and women. Beneath this façade, however, he was a complex and haunted man, addicted to laudanum, and his powerful, often violent novels revealed a dark side of Victorian life. He supported two common-law wives and their children, and as Peters shows, he provoked scandal by refusing to cloak his complicated love affairs in the customary hypocritical pretense of the period. Having discovered a hitherto unknown autobiography by Wilkie Collins's mother, Peters draws on this document and on thousands of Collins's unpublished letters to create this provocative picture of his life and times. She describes in detail the saga of his exhausting struggle for better copyright protection for authors, especially for English authors in the United States. She has also studied the manuscripts of his novels, plays, and stories, including those which he did not complete, finding that some of his neglected novels turn out to be much more interesting than most readers realize today. This edition of the book has been supplemented to include an appendix describing Collins's "Tahitian" novel. Written when he was twenty, the manuscript of this work, Ioláni, was thought to have disappeared, but it has recently been rediscovered and sold to a private collector. For any Collins enthusiast, or for anyone interested in the literary history of the Victorian period, The King of Inventors provides a vivid account of Collins's unusual personal life in the context of his literary and artistic friendships and of newly revealed facts about the two women with whom he shared his "double life." Originally published in 1993. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Encyclopedia Of Freemasonry And Its Kindred Sciences Volume 2 D L

Download or read book Encyclopedia Of Freemasonry And Its Kindred Sciences Volume 2 D L written by Albert G. Mackey and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Albert G. Mackey appears as author of this " Encyclopedia of Freemasonry and its Kindred Sciences," which, being a library in inself, superseded most of the Masonic works which have been tolerated by the craft — chiefly because none better could be obtained. Here is a work which fulfils the hope which sustained the author through ten years' literary labor, that, under one cover he "would furnish every Mason who might consult its pages the means of acquiring a knowledge of all matters connected with the science, the philosophy, and the history of his order." Up to the present time the modern literature of Freemasonry has been diffuse, lumbering, unreliable, and, out of all reasonable proportions. There is, in Mackey's "Encyclopaedia of Masonry," well digested, well arranged, and confined within reasonable limits, all that a Mason can desire to find in a book exclusively devoted to the history, the arts, science, and literature of Masonry. This is volume two out of four and covering the letters D to L.

Book Cyber Physical Systems Advances in Design Modelling

Download or read book Cyber Physical Systems Advances in Design Modelling written by Alla G. Kravets and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents new findings on cyber-physical systems design and modelling approaches based on AI and data-driven techniques, identifying the key industrial challenges and the main features of design and modelling processes. To enhance the efficiency of the design process, it proposes new approaches based on the concept of digital twins. Further, it substantiates the scientific, practical, and methodological approaches to modelling and simulating of cyber-physical systems. Exploring digital twins of cyber-physical systems as well as of production systems, it proposes combining both mathematical models and data processing techniques as advanced methods for cyber-physical system design and modelling. Moreover, it presents the implementation of the developed prototypes, including testing in real industries, which have collected and analyzed big data and proved their effectiveness. The book is intended for practitioners, enterprise representatives, scientists, and Ph.D. and master’s students interested in the research and applications of cyber-physical systems in different domains.

Book From Football to Fig Newtons 76 American Inventors and The Inventions You Know By Heart

Download or read book From Football to Fig Newtons 76 American Inventors and The Inventions You Know By Heart written by Brian D'Ambrosio and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American ingenuity reveals itself in the simplest and most forgotten places. From familiar brand names such as Wheaties (George Cormack) to the most mundane stop at the traffic light (Garrett Augustus Morgan Sr.), the everyday presents abundant opportunity to respect and recall the intellect of the men and women who crafted the culture and landscape of the environment we call our own. For every trip to the grocery store to buy a box of Band-Aids(R) (Earle Dickson), there is a chance to ask the question of where and how a certain product came about. With every click of the computer mouse (Douglas Engelbart), our curiosity should deepen. This book stands as a reminder to all those who need inspiration or wish to inspire, a nudge in the right direction, an instructive to get busy creating and perfecting the Nation our ancestors envisioned. It's an instructive to read, familiarize and gain momentum from those who created the spaces and comforts we take for granted.
