Why does this happen? What is that thing? Where does it come from? All of the Oonga Frank stories offer fanciful examples of these most basic questions that engage young readers - and offer ways to develop their own answers. The first of these stories, “Oonga Frank Invents Porridge” , was created over 30 years ago, as a way to entertain and capture the imagination of the author’s young son, Eli. Book excerpt: A new and original take on the iconic story of man meets giant ape in the biggest and hairiest parody of all time, timed to coincide with the new Peter Jackson movie! Just as Peter Jackson's Kong hits the big screen in an exciting and re-imagined format, looking uncannily like a missing chapter from The Lord of the Rings movies, comes the true story behind the world's biggest and hairiest love story. The intrepid explorer Indiana Bones (so-called for his passion for energetic archaeology) is hired to track down King Dong, legendary for his sheer massiveness (nudge nudge, wink wink). Accompanied by his gay best friend, fey Ray, and the platinum blonde Ann Darling, there to lure Dong into the open, they set off into uncharted territory. As the story develops, dodging intrusions from dinosaurs, Nazis, Orcs and a myriad of characters and plots from movies both classic and contemporary, it inevitably leads up to a king-sized climax and lots of monkeying around on an American landmark - yes, Dong climbs the famous Hollywood sign and is buzzed by spaceships. All very silly, this must-have humour title apes a number of bestselling spoofs in the best traditions of Bored of Rings, Barry Trotter, The Matewix and Star Bores.

Book excerpt: Southern India, first century CE. With the Pandyas conquered, the Cheras all but vanquished and the attention of the king of the north fixed on other lands, Tamilakam is flourishing under Chola rule. Trade in the Chola capital, Puhar, is booming, and King Karikalan's most ambitious infrastructure project is finally becoming a reality: a dam, the Grand Anicut, is being constructed to divert the waters of the Kaveri, to the elation of farmers across the land - and the discontent of the trader class. Amid all this, the arrival of a Roman ship carrying the merchant prince Marcellus sets off a series of events that will alter the fate of Tamilakam. Marcellus is here for more than the spices, gems and circus animals; he is here on a mission from his father, one that will lead him right into the underbelly of this prosperous realm. He encounters spies and robbers, monks and dacoits, innkeepers and street vendors, each with hidden motives - but the Roman has his own secrets, which threaten to set ablaze the simmering tensions that divide the kingdom. Rich in historical detail, this action-packed, riveting tale layered with the eternal struggle between divergent ideas is a fascinating journey into one of the greatest periods in Indian history.

Book Developing Early Literacy

Download or read book Developing Early Literacy written by Christopher J. Lonigan and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Assessment of Educational Progress reveals that 37 percent of U.S. fourth graders fail to achieve basic levels of reading achievement. In 1997, the U.S. Congress asked that a review of research be conducted to determine what could be done to improve reading and writing achievement. The resulting "Report of the National Reading Panel: Teaching Children to Read" (NICHD, 2000) has been influential in helping to guide reading-education policy and practice in the United States. However, that report did not examine the implications of instructional practices used with children from birth through age 5. To address this gap in the knowledge base, the National Early Literacy Panel (NELP) was convened. The panel was asked to apply a similar methodological review process to that used by the National Reading Panel (NRP) to issues of instructional practices for young children so that parents and teachers could better support their emerging literacy skills. The NELP report represents a systematic and extensive synthesis of the published research literature concerning children's early literacy skills. It provides educators and policymakers with important information about the early skills that are implicated in later literacy learning, as well as information about the type of instruction that can enhance these skills. The results also identify areas in which additional research is needed. The meta-analyses conducted by the panel showed that a wide range of interventions had a positive impact on children's early literacy learning.
