They were inaugurated thirty-five years ago as brief essays to direct bright students and their teachers towards significant areas of critical concern in a major author's work and the relevant bibliography. Since then, they have moved on to more extended essays on areas of thought, as well as on particular authors. This essay is designed to introduce such a general area namely, the world of fifth and fourth-century Greek prose. There are already Surveys on historiography and on science and on 'ancient thought' (primarily philosophy). This book is not intended to reproduce or cannibalize those excellent studies. Rather, this Survey takes a different, complementary look at the cultural revolution of the classical polis through one of its new ways of writing. Central to this project is rhetoric as a science and a practice but it has proved impossible to think about rhetoric seriously without looking at it across the differing developing prose genres. It is an essay designed first to put rhetoric in a nuanced context of writing, second and perhaps most importantly to recapture some of the novelty and excitement of a period when genres now so familiar to us were being established. This is not a book on 'prose style': the requirements of translation and transliteration forbid exten sive analysis of such precisions of expression. Nor is this a full survey of the possible or even common discussions of all of the authors and genres mentioned: in the notes I have provided a spare and critical (rather than exhaustive) bibliography, focusing on works in English for what I assume will be a mainly Anglophone readership, and indicating where further work can be found. I have not indicated every debt, so as not to burden the text with an excessive apparatus, and the notes are solely for following up issues of interest for the reader. If this book turns some of its readers back towards Greek prose writing with a fresh eye and a wish to read on, more deeply and with a new sense of the critical issues involved then the project will have been a success. The process was obviously one of the adaptation of lan guage, a genuinely primitive inheritance like the traditions of poetry, to many differing and present needs. It was indeed closely bound up with the effort of the English people to find for itself the golden mean of expression between ephemeral colloquial discourse and the special and often highly conventionalized forms of poetic expression. The study of the origins of English prose is consequently con cerned not only with the growth of the English mind, but, in the broadest sense, with the development of the English language. Since literary prose is very largely the speech of every day discourse applied to special purposes, it is in a way true that the origins of English prose are to be sought in the origins of English speech. No student of the speech would be content to pause short of the earliest English records in the four centuries which preceded the Norman Conquest. F rom the days of the first Teutonic conquerors of Celtic Britain, the English speech has continued in an un broken oral tradition to the present time. But obviously English literary prose in its various stages has not been merely the written form, the echo, of this colloquial speech. The bonds which unite the two are close, but their courses are not parallel. English literary prose has had no such continuous history as the language, and there are sufficient reasons for regarding the prose of Alfred and his few contemporaries and successors as a chapter in the life of the English people which begins and ends with itself. For its antiquity and for its importance in preserving so abundantly the early records of the language, Old English prose is to be respected; but it was never highly developed as an art, nor was its vitality great enough to withstand the shock of the several conquests which brought about a general confusion of English ideals and traditions in the tenth and eleventh centuries. It is consequently in no sense the source from which modern English prose has sprung. It has a separate story, and when writers of the early modern period again turned to prose, they did so in utter disregard and ignorance of the fact that Alfred and zelfric had preceded them by several centuries in the use of English for purposes of prose expression. Nor did the later writers unwittingly benefit by the inheritance of a previous discipline of the language in the writing of prose. In the general political and social cataclysm of the eleventh century, the literary speech of the Old English period went down forever, leaving for succeeding generations nothing but the popular speech upon which to build anew the founda tions of a literary culture. I have written the present volume be cause I have found no other that, to my mind, combines satisfactory accomplishment of these ends with a selec tion of authors sufficiently limited for clearness and with adequate accuracy and fulness of details, biographical and other. A manual, it seems to me, should supply a sys tematic statement of the important facts, so that the greater part of the student's time, in class and without, may be left free for the study of the literature itself. I hope that the book may prove adaptable to various methods and conditions of work. Experience has suggested the brief introductory statement of main literary prin ciples, too often taken for granted by teachers, with much resulting haziness in the student's mind. The list of as signments and questions at the end is intended, of course, to be freely treated. I hope that the list of available inexpensive editions of the chief authors may suggest a practical method of providing the material, especially for colleges which can provide enough copies for class use. Poets, of course, may be satisfactorily read in volumes of selections; but to me, at least, a book of brief extracts from twenty or a hundred prose authors is an absurdity.
