Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "Office Automation" implies much and means little. The word "Office" is usually reserved for units in an organization that have a rather general function. They are supposed to support different activities, but it is notoriously difficult to determine what an office is supposed to do. Automation in this loose context may mean many different things. At one extreme, it is nothing more than giving people better tools than typewriters and telephones with which to do their work more efficiently and effectively. At the opposite extreme, it implies the replacement of people by machines which perform office procedures automatically. In this book we will take the approach that "Office Automation" is much more than just better tools, but falls significantly short of replacing every person in an office. It may reduce the need for clerks, it may take over some secretarial functions, and it may lessen the dependence of principals on support personnel. Office Automation will change the office environment. It will eliminate the more mundane and well understood functions and will highlight the decision-oriented activities in an office. The goal of this book is to provide some understanding of office . activities and to evaluate the potential of Office Information Systems for office procedure automation. To achieve this goal, we need to explore concepts, elaborate on techniques, and outline tools.

  • Author : Don Tapscott
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-21

Download or read book Office Automation written by Don Tapscott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every pioneer takes large risks, hoping that the new frontier he seeks will provide the benefits of independence and good fortune. Don Tapscott is such a pioneer in the area of office automation. He has been a true pioneer, having entered the field in its early days and taken the risk of working not in technol ogy, which was fashionable, but in the field of the problems of organizations, which was less fashionable, but in many ways more important. The utilization of computers for data processing, accounting, inventory, and other "bread and butter" applications is now well entrenched in our society and culture. The process of designing such systems tends to focus on the needs of the company and the constraints of the equipment, leading to efficient systems with little tolerance for the variety of people who must use or interface with them. Within the office automation area, these methods do not work nearly as well. The frequency and amount of human interaction in the office environment, and the wide variety of situations and reactions there in, demands a different design methodology.

Book Human Intelligence Based Manufacturing

Download or read book Human Intelligence Based Manufacturing written by Yoshimi Ito and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Intelligence-Based Manufacturing is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Series edited by Professor D.T. Pham of the University of Wales, College of Cardiff. The Flexibility Computerised-Integrated Manufacturing Structure (FCIMS) is a significant innovation in the field of the production science and technology which combines rapid manufacture with the requirements of human society. Due to greater market diversification a new approach is needed as a response to this new manufacturing environment. International expert contributions deal with aspects of this response and describe how to amalgamate higher levels of automation with human-oriented functions, maintaining a high level of productivity. The benefits are an improved international competitiveness and co-operation. Since Human Intelligent-Based Manufacturing deals with the integration of technology and sociology it is of interest to both the academia and industry. Collaboration in manufacturing between Japan, Europe and the United States is a topic of high current interest.

Book Computer Work Stations

Download or read book Computer Work Stations written by Herman R. Holtz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us do not realize that we are living in revolutionary times. To a large degree, we are in a time of massive economic and industrial change, and perhaps history will one day record this era as the Second Industrial Revolution. Certainly we have been made aware of the decline of "smoke stack industries" and of the rapid rise of what might be called the "infor mation industries" in the United States and, presumably, in most of the western world. Several best-selling authors have assured us that we must change or perish, and a great many industrialists appear to agree. Ironically, we have also been all but promised a return to a modern form of that very cottage industry economy that the first Industrial Revolution wiped out: Some of our leading savants envision individuals working at home on desktop computers, connected via hardwire (telephone) to an employer's large, central computer. Will this come to pass? Perhaps; the industrial/economic indicators appear to point in that direction, although there are the problems of numerous laws and regulations -labor laws and OSHA laws, to name only two areas, and ignoring for the moment the reaction of our labor unions - that would be most difficult to reconcile with such an arrangement. In a sense, it is the computer that has brought about this condition.

Book Office Information Technology

Download or read book Office Information Technology written by Randy J. Goldfield and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1986-11-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing importance of information both as a lifeline of organizational administration and decision-making and as a product in its own right, office automation systems have become a paramount management concern. Choosing the appropriate system from the many types available and getting the most out it requires a degree of specialized knowledge that is seldom available to busy managers and executives. This volume, the first in a series of handbooks on office automation systems planning and implementation, is designed for the planner who needs to know how to evaluate an organization's system requirements, develop an overall systems strategy, and choose and work with consultants and systems vendors.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study assesses the consequences of the continuing and rapid introduction of information and telecommunications technologies in offices. The report of the study contains 12 chapters. After a brief look at the context of office automation from the perspective of history, the first chapter highlights some expectations about the technologies and their development over the next 15 years. It also introduces a framework that guides the assessment, summarizes the findings, and identifies policy issues for the next decade. Chapters 2 through 6 discuss the possible effects of office automation in more detail. They deal with potential effects on employment levels; the kind of training and education needed for office work; changes in work content, jobs, occupations, and organizations; the quality of work life, the office environment and labor management relations; and the security and confidentiality of information. Chapters 7 and 8 consider two alternatives to conventional offices, made feasible by office automation: home-based work and performance of data-entry operations in countries with lower paid workers. Chapter 9 and 10 look at office automation in the public sector, while Chapter 11 deals with office automation and small businesses. The final chapter considers the implications of office automation for two groups: working women and minorities. Appendix A describes office automation technology as it is now and as it is likely to develop between 1985 and 2000, while Appendix B summarizes case studies of the automation of several offices.
