Book The Passionate Collector

Download or read book The Passionate Collector written by Roy R. Neuberger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-05-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few living persons have served the Metropolitan Museum of Art-indeed, the entire world of art and art museums-longer, or with more distinction, than Roy Neuberger. A man of taste, passion, persistence, and generosity, he has shared much of his great private collection with the public, and for generations has supported activities that bring people to museums, and motivate them to return again and again. Now, this giant of a man has recorded eighty years of his life-and the result is entertaining, illuminating, and, like the tireless gentleman himself, inspiring." -Philippe de Montebello, Director, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Equal to his passion for investing is Roy Neuberger's love for art-which he has collected and encouraged for eight decades. In The Passionate Collector: Eighty Years in the World of Art, you'll follow this fascinating financial figure and great patron of the arts from the streets of 1920s Paris to the museums of New York as he develops the eye of a connoisseur and begins to collect great contemporary art. Vivid detail puts you in the center of the action as Neuberger collects the brilliant artists of his time-Milton Avery, Jackson Pollock, Ben Shahn, Edward Hopper; works with legendary art dealers Paul Rosenberg, Betty Parsons, Sidney Janis, and Leo Castelli; and befriends avid collectors, including the incomparable Duncan Phillips. You'll follow Neuberger as he strives to further the cause of contemporary American artists by exhibiting, lending, and donating from his growing collection, and becoming an activist for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney. You'll also see how the Neuberger Museum of Art was created at the urging of Governor Nelson Rockefeller, and how it continues to fascinate art enthusiasts today. Part personal memoir, part history of art, The Passionate Collector offers a unique view of twentieth-century American art from a man who has lived it.

Book Could Have Would Have Should Have

Download or read book Could Have Would Have Should Have written by Tiqui Atencio and published by Art / Books. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it take to be a serious art collector? What drives someone to go after a particular work regardless of the cost? What form of addiction or compulsion causes an individual to devote vast amounts of time, money and emotional energy in pursuit of something that is unobtainable to most of us? Tiqui Atencio has been collecting since she was eighteen years old. Decades later she is one of the most prominent collectors of contemporary art, on the boards of international museums and art-world power lists. For Could Have, Would Have, Should Have, she has interviewed more than eighty of the world's most influential collectors - from financiers to artists - and asked them to tell their own story of how they started to collect and what continues to motivate them. In a series of thirty chapters - among them 'Serendipity', 'Obsessions', 'Auction moments', 'What was I thinking?', 'To sell or not sell', 'Being custodians' - they reveal their highs and lows, the successes and regrets, the shared passions and intense rivalries, the works that got away ... and the ones that perhaps should have done. Their anecdotes and recollections reveal the many practical and emotional aspects of collecting art, all the unexpected pleasures and challenges. What emerges is a frank and honest, surprising and eye-opening, and sometimes hilarious account of a lifelong dedication that is described by some as a heroic commitment and by others as a crazy sickness. Cartoons throughout the book by celebrated artist and satirist Pablo Helguera complement the humorous and entertaining tone of the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Feb. 2, 2019, the skies over Maynardville, Tennessee, filled with the roar of four F/A-18F Super Hornets streaking overhead in close formation. In each aircraft were two young female flyers, executing the first all-woman Missing Man Formation flyover in Navy history in memory of Captain Rosemary Mariner — groundbreaking Navy jet pilot, inspiring commander, determined and dedicated leader — whose drive to ensure the United States military had its choice of the best America had to offer, both men and women, broke down barriers and opened doors for female aviators wanting to serve their country. Selected for Navy flight training as an experiment in 1972, Mariner and her five fellow graduates from the inaugural group of female Naval Aviators racked up an impressive roster of achievements, and firsts: first woman to fly a tactical jet aircraft; first woman to command an aviation squadron; first female Hurricane Hunter; first pregnant Navy pilot; plaintiff in a federal lawsuit that overturned limits on women's ability to fulfill their military duty. Leading by example, and by confrontation when necessary, they challenged deep skepticism within the fleet and blazed a trail for female aviators wanting to serve their country equally with their male counterparts. This is the story of their struggles and triumphs as they earned their Wings of Gold, learned to fly increasingly sophisticated jet fighters and helicopters, mastered aircraft carrier landings, served at sea and reached heights of command that would have been unthinkable less than a generation before. And it is the story of the legacy they left behind, one for which the women performing the Navy’s first Missing Woman Flyover in Mariner’s memory owe a debt of gratitude.

Book The China Collectors

Download or read book The China Collectors written by Karl E. Meyer and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to Salem sea captains, Gilded Age millionaires, curators on horseback and missionaries gone native, North American museums now possess the greatest collections of Chinese art outside of East Asia itself. How did it happen? The China Collectors is the first full account of a century-long treasure hunt in China from the Opium Wars and the Boxer Rebellion to Mao Zedong's 1949 ascent. The principal gatherers are mostly little known and defy invention. They included "foreign devils" who braved desert sandstorms, bandits and local warlords in acquiring significant works. Adventurous curators like Langdon Warner, a forebear of Indiana Jones, argued that the caves of Dunhuang were already threatened by vandals, thereby justifying the removal of frescoes and sculptures. Other Americans include George Kates, an alumnus of Harvard, Oxford and Hollywood, who fell in love with Ming furniture. The Chinese were divided between dealers who profited from the artworks' removal, and scholars who sought to protect their country's patrimony. Duanfang, the greatest Chinese collector of his era, was beheaded in a coup and his splendid bronzes now adorn major museums. Others in this rich tapestry include Charles Lang Freer, an enlightened Detroit entrepreneur, two generations of Rockefellers, and Avery Brundage, the imperious Olympian, and Arthur Sackler, the grand acquisitor. No less important are two museum directors, Cleveland's Sherman Lee and Kansas City's Laurence Sickman, who challenged the East Coast's hegemony. Shareen Blair Brysac and Karl E. Meyer even-handedly consider whether ancient treasures were looted or salvaged, and whether it was morally acceptable to spirit hitherto inaccessible objects westward, where they could be studied and preserved by trained museum personnel. And how should the US and Canada and their museums respond now that China has the means and will to reclaim its missing patrimony?

Book A Collector s View of Collecting Art

Download or read book A Collector s View of Collecting Art written by Fima Lifshitz M.D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was prepared by researching publicly available information, selected references, published books and from information obtained from artists. I have had the pleasure of knowing many of the painters and sculptors personally and over many decades; much of the information presented in this book is from them. The art depicted was all in my collection, although some pieces have been sold, most have been gifted – donated to museums and other institutions – prior to the completion of this book. I thank all of the artists who created the art that has given me utmost pleasure over many years. I have wonderful memories of time spent with the artists who became my friends. Additionally, I thank all those who appreciated my art collection and helped with the downsizing. This painful experience was somehow lessened, as the art is now in good hands, to be enjoyed by many now and in future generations. Foremost, I acknowledge my wife, Jere, who has been a partner in my life; she is the one who has endured all the toils, trials and tribulations of my collecting art, and to share with me our great journey of the “Art of Living with Art.”

Twenty-eight chapters, each written by an acknowledged expert in their field, offer thought-provoking examinations of a wide variety of topics. The book is divided into three sections. Part I, "The Historical Overview", explores subjects ranging from the Hudson River School to the art of the American West, American artists in Europe, American Impressionism, modernism, African American art, and the major artists John Sloan, Everett Shinn, Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Arshile Gorky, John Graham, Willem de Kooning and Guy Pène du Bois. Part II deals with "Connoisseurship and the Collector", and covers such topics as developing an instinct for quality; dealing in fine art; conservation; choosing wisely in making a collection; researching paintings you may be considering acquiring; the role of qualified art advisers; the anatomy of an auction; and legal issues when buying and selling art. Featured in these discussions are prominent collectors who have contributed so greatly to the American art scene over many years. Part III is devoted to "Changes in the Art Market".
