Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interpreter With His Bible II. The Divine Inspiration of the Bible is proved by its rem arkable unity. It was written by about forty different authors and its composi tion extended over some fifteen hundred years. If it had been composed by uninspired men, it would be full of jarring Opinions. But, in fact, it is one harmonious whole. We discover in it the progressive development of redemption, but no contradiction in its essential doctrines. There is diversity of expression, but unity of sentiment In the circumstances, this could hardly be, if the Bible had not been inspired by one Person. Book Bible Interpretation Or the Bible Its Own Interpreter

Download or read book Bible Interpretation Or the Bible Its Own Interpreter written by John A. Lansing and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Interpretation, or the Bible Its Own Interpreter: Word Studies The Bible is a book for all men. It is not for the exclusive use of scholars, educated persons, or any single class. Its message is for our daily life, for it is our one Book of Life. There are many ways of approach to the Bible, many methods of study. But for those who desire to know what the fundamental teachings are, there is a plain path that any one can follow. Make the Bible its own interpreter. The object of this book is to give those readers of the Bible who are more or less puzzled over vital truths which deeply concern them a basis and a method of study by which they may get a clear and consistent sense of the Bible as a whole and of its teaching along many lines. This little volume illustrates this method, and the way that the writer has found it of value in the study of the Scriptures. The "word studies" are at their best simply suggestive. It is hoped that they will open new fountains of living waters to many Bible lovers. The Bible uses words that are of universal interest, as death and life, good and evil, love and hate, sin and righteousness, God and man, angels and demons. It must be that these fundamental words and others like them should be viewed from some common standpoint, should have some consistent meaning. If in a book made up of sixty-six different books, written by many authors who lived at different times during a period of fifteen hundred years, these fundamental words have one steady meaning, it shows clearly that the Bible is the work of one mind, of men of one sequence of thought, inspired by the Holy Spirit. The object of the writer is to illustrate the truth of this premise, that the fundamental words of the Bible find their real interpretation in the Bible itself; and that in this respect the Book authenticates itself, a premise the importance of which is apparent only when its far-reaching effect on personal investigation and belief is perceived. This priesthood holds the right of presidency and to administer in spiritual things. The Melchisedec priesthood is divided into the following number of officers: The manner in which the above officers are called and ordained. The officers of the church of Jesus Christ, in this dispensation, were called to the priesthood in conformity with this law. The calling of men in priesthood must be ratified in following manner: Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, the first two persons to hold the priesthood in these last days were called, according to the law, as was Aaron. Their ordination deferred until the call had been confirmed and ordination directed by the church. The one to succeed the martyr in the office of president of the high priesthood and the church must be appointed and ordained. The president of the reorganised church of J. C. of L. D. S. has been called and ordained in harmony with the requirements of this law of God. The appointment of the successor to Joseph Smith (the martyr) had to be made through him. The following statements are now presented to show that, in compliance with his own law. God did appoint the present president, Joseph Smith, through his father, who was slain in 1844. In harmony with the foregoing President Joseph Smith was chosen and his ordination directed by the body, i.e., the church. The law provides that the president shall have two counsellors, appointed by the Lord, through the president, this appointment to be confirmed and ordination directed by the church, and these three constitute the presidency of the entire church. Duties of president defined; The duties of the presidency as a quorum; The twelve apostles, the manner of their calling. They are called in two ways, first, by a committee appointed by the Lord and the church; second, directly through the president of the church. Duties of an apostle defined; The Seventy: The law of the church provides for seven presidents of seventy. How the seven presidents are appointed. Their duties and prerogatives. Seventy called through seven presidents. To select from elders' quorum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Its Interpreters, Its Miracles and Prophecies: With a Conspectus of the Argument and Notes I therefore have not shrunk from issuing a Second Edition of The Bible and its Interpreters, now that it is called for. But in so doing, I have endeavoured to make the scope of the argument plainer, by a Conspectus prefixed to it. My attention has been kindly directed to the fact that the Bishop of Natal in a recent volume has referred to some of my statements, as if they supported his views of Holy Scripture. I am glad to think that every competent reader can judge for himself, by looking at my words in their context, whether they do not rather de stroy all the grounds on which his lord ship bases his Scripture criticism. As tothose who will not take this trouble, (and I hope the Bishop, with his great fairness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Houses of the Interpreter, David Lyle Jeffrey explores the terrain of the cultural history of biblical interpretation. But Jeffrey does not merely rest content to chart biblical scholarship and how it has both influenced and been influenced by culture. Instead, he chooses to focus upon the "art" of Biblical interpretation --how sculptors, musicians, poets, novelists, and painters have "read" the Bible. By so doing, Jeffrey clearly demonstrates that such cultural interpretation has deepened the church's understanding of the Bible as Scripture and that, remarkably, this cultural reading has contributed to theology and the practice of faith. Jeffrey's chapters effectively root the theological issues central to any hermeneutical enterprise (e.g., Scriptural authority, narrative, the Old Testament as Christian Scripture, the role of the reader, gender, and postmodernism) in specific authors and artists (e.g., Chaucer, Bosch, Sir Orfeo, C. S. Lewis) --and he does this in constant conversation with literature, both eastern and western.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interpreter: January June, 1905 The questions which literary criticism, scientific discovery, and archaeological research have raised are pressing and demand solution, but there are other questions, equally urgent and no less perplexing, which continually confront us. On every hand weighty social and economic problems await attention, and we shirk them at our peril. The times move quickly on, and change follows change with a rapidity unknown in earlier days. How are we to apply to the ever-changing conditions of human life the principles which Jesus Christ taught by the words which He spake, and illustrated in His life on earth? It is of primary importance that we should interpret His words by His life, for thus alone shall we escape a false deduction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of the Bible: Itself the Teacher, and Its Own Interpreter; Five Versions of the Old Testament, and Four of the New, Compared With the Originals A new English version of all the Bible, however much to be desired, is not necessary for the development of what most concerns us to know, - the will and purpose Of God in reference to mankind. The meaning of a few of the leading words of Scripture, in fact of any one of several of them, makes His revelation in that respect, plain, simple, and harmonious from beginning to end; just what was certainly intended; easy to be understood by the faculties he himself gave, and to which it is addressed. The words I refer to, I take from the English version. They are the words: soul; spirit; ghost; death; paradise; hell; satan; devil; heaven; and the word and subject, resurrection; and to whom the promise is made of becoming a child of the resurrection. The Bible is its own dictionary; its own interpreter. By its various modes of expressing the same idea, it so fixes the meaning of each of these words, as to render that meaning incontrovertible.
