Book At Last the Internationalization of Retail Banking The Case of the Spanish Banks in Latin America

Download or read book At Last the Internationalization of Retail Banking The Case of the Spanish Banks in Latin America written by Mauro F. Guillen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1995 two Spanish banks -- Banco Santander Central Hispano and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya -- have become the largest foreign banks in retail banking in Latin America. This recent development merits careful analysis because foreign direct investment is rare in retail banking. We find that the Spanish banks are exhibiting asset-seeking, asset-exploiting, and oligopolistic behaviors, thus posing no serious challenge to established theories of foreign investment. We discuss the implications for research on cross-border banking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banks' international strategy and the way in which they have expanded are explanatory factors for the economic effects of their activity. Based on information from individual institutions, the internationalisation strategies of banks based in Spain, the Netherlands and the United States have been compared. In addition, in the Spanish case, whether banks' risk, efficiency, return and income source type differ according to the chosen model of internationalisation has been tested. The results of this comparison point to Spanish banks with subsidiaries and branches abroad having higher returns but also higher costs than banks whose foreign business is mainly cross-border.

Book The Origins of Modern Banking in Spain

Download or read book The Origins of Modern Banking in Spain written by Carles Sudrià and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the formation of the Spanish banking system. It provides a general overview of European financial systems in operation during the mid-nineteenth century, followed by a detailed analysis of the economic and institutional changes that gave rise to a new form of banking in Spain. The chapters analyse changes on banking regulation; study the social origin of banks’ promoters; investigate the economic results of banks; and evaluate the interaction between banks and the economy as a whole. Finally, the causes, extent and consequences of monetary plurality in Spain and its European context are discussed. As such, this book covers the gap that exists in the Spanish banking historiography. Until now only the Bank of Spain and its predecessors had been adequately examined. As the Bank of Spain acted mostly as the state’s financial agent, we know very little about private-sector financing. This text provides data and analysis for a more comprehensive view of early Spanish financial development in a comparative European framework. The Origins of Modern Banking in Spain should be considered essential reading for financial history students and scholars, as well as anybody interested in longview approaches to modern financial development.

Book Lessons from the Strategy of Banco Santander

Download or read book Lessons from the Strategy of Banco Santander written by Pedro Parada and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do local services internationalise? Executives in retail banking face the challenge of internationalising a service which is local in nature. This research proposes a new model that shows some basic similarities with previous conceptual models. However, it incorporates the uniqueness of service industries where entry into new markets usually starts with foreign direct investment. This article analyses in depth the successful internationalisation of a retail bank, Banco Santander, from 1985 to 2005, extending traditional internationalisation models to a service industry. The methodology consists of longitudinal data and qualitative methods. The experience of Banco Santander, the leading bank in Spain, the Euro-zone and Latin America, shows an internationalisation process based on three steps. The first of these is to develop capabilities in the home market. The second step is to create options for leveraging capabilities in new international markets, either through acquisition of a minor player or through strategic alliances with established local companies. The analysis shows that at this step, market selection is based on cultural proximity, geographic focus and deregulation or increased competition. Finally, the third step consists of acquiring a leading local competitor and a quick international roll-out followed by implementation of integrated capabilities.

Book Spanish Banks Successful Expansion Into Latin America

Download or read book Spanish Banks Successful Expansion Into Latin America written by Roberto J. Santillán-Salgado and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish banks were late-comers to the industry's globalization process, several decades behind U.S., other European and Japanese banks, achieving full multinational presence until the mid 1990s.Their overseas expansion was simultaneous to two major European structural changes: a) the creation of the Single Financial Market; and, b) the introduction of the euro.Since the mid 1990's, major Spanish banks' have centered their strategies on the penetration of the largest Latin American markets. Today, one decade later, the results of that strategy can be judged as highly successful. In more recent years, simultaneous to the consolidation of their presence in Latin America, Spanish banks have also targeted other European countries for further expansion. In that process, the international expertise, scale of operations and advanced technological platforms they developed as a by-product of their Latin American expansion make them very strong competitors. This paper discusses in some detail the Latin American expansion component of their recent strategy.

Book excerpt: Sofia A. Perez has written a historically informed account of the politics of domestic financial liberalization in Spain in the past twenty-five years. She challenges the widespread assumption that international market forces alone explain domestic reforms in a formerly interventionist state. In Spain, she suggests, domestic elites seized on liberal economic arguments to promote agendas that had less to do with international pressures than with domestic politics.
