Book The International Revision Commentary on the New Testament Vol 5 Based Upon the Revised Version of 1881 The Acts of the Apostles Classic Reprint

Download or read book The International Revision Commentary on the New Testament Vol 5 Based Upon the Revised Version of 1881 The Acts of the Apostles Classic Reprint written by J. S. Howson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The International Revision Commentary on the New Testament, Vol. 5: Based Upon the Revised Version of 1881; The Acts of the Apostles The Acts is distinguished sharply from the Epistles by its contents. Paul, Peter, John. James and Jude in their letters are concerned with doctrinal discussions, and practical exhortations encouraging believers to stedfastness, or warning them against evil practices. The Acts is a missionary record, and not a doctrinal or parenetical treatise. It is a record of activities rather than beliefs, of deeds rather than doctrines. It is a statement of the extension of the Christian faith in individual hearts and geographical centres, the obstacles opposing it, and the courage and constancy of the Apostles and their co-laborers. On the other hand, the Epistles of Paul cannot be exhaustively understood without the historical details which the Acts supplies. The main events recorded in this book are the following. After Jesus had ascended, leaving as his legacy the promise of the Holy Ghost (1: 5), the Apostles meet in an upper room in Jerusalem, and till the place made vacant in their number by the suicide of Judas. On the day of Pentecost the Holy Ghost is poured out, and Peter preaches his first sermon, urging a large audience of Jews to believe in Christ and be baptized (ch. 2). The Apostles for the present make Jerusalem the scene of their labors. The Jewish authorities from the beginning offer opposition to their preaching, but succeed neither in crushing the new sect out of existence, nor in suppressing it into silence. The Church increases rapidly in numbers, but the self-sacrifices and devotion of the body of believers, as a whole, do not prevent the development of worldliness (5: 1-11) or the growth of dissensions. One of the latter formed the occasion of the election of the first deacons (ch. 6), one of whom, Stephen, by his eloquence discomfited all opponents in debate, and by his calm martyrdom shewed the world how a Christian could die. Persecution broke out afresh, but became a blessing by being the occasion of the scattering of the Apostles and the dissemination of the Gospel beyond Jerusalem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental commentary on the book of Revelation, originally published in 1999, has been highly acclaimed by scholars, pastors, students, and others seriously interested in interpreting the Apocalypse for the benefit of the church. Too often Revelation is viewed as a book only about the future. As G. K. Beale shows, however, Revelation is not merely a futurology but a book about how the church should live for the glory of God throughout the ages -- including our own. Engaging important questions concerning the interpretation of Revelation in scholarship today, as well as interacting with the various viewpoints scholars hold on these issues, Beale's work makes a major contribution in the much-debated area of how the Old Testament is used in the Apocalypse. Approaching Revelation in terms of its own historical background and literary character, Beale argues convincingly that John's use of Old Testament allusions -- and the way the Jewish exegetical tradition interpreted these same allusions -- provides the key for unlocking the meaning of Revelation's many obscure metaphors. In the course of Beale's careful verse-by-verse exegesis, which also untangles the logical flow of John's thought as it develops from chapter to chapter, it becomes clear that Revelation's challenging pictures are best understood not by apparent technological and contemporary parallels in the twentieth century but by Old Testament and Jewish parallels from the distant past.

Book The First and Second Letters to the Thessalonians

Download or read book The First and Second Letters to the Thessalonians written by Gordon D. Fee and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2009-07-10 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this commentary Gordon Fee aims first and foremost to offer a fresh exposition of the text of 1 and 2 Thessalonians. He shows the reader what is in the biblical text, what the text meant in the first century, and what it means now. Fee reveals the logic of each argument or narrative before moving on to the details of each verse, and he concludes each section with a theological-practical reflection on the meaning of the text today. Among other things, Fee explores the occasion for writing for each epistle, restoring 2 Thessalonians to the place it deserves as a full companion to the first letter, rather than merely a tagalong to 1 Thessalonians.

Book The Letter to the Ephesians

Download or read book The Letter to the Ephesians written by Lynn H. Cohick and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letter to the Ephesians provokes an array of interpretive questions regarding authorship, audience, date, occasion, purpose of writing, and the nature of its moral instruction—including its words addressed to slaves and masters. Interacting critically in an arena of intense debate, Lynn Cohick provides an exegetically astute analysis of the six chapters of Ephesians, offering an insightful account of the letter’s theology and soteriology as she attends to its expansive prose and lofty vision of God’s redemption. Cohick analyzes everything from the letter’s description of the church and its appeals for discipleship to the complex relationship between Jews and gentiles within the text and in the broader cultural context. Her extensive knowledge of the social realities of women and families in the ancient world is also evident throughout. Historically sensitive and theologically rich, Cohick’s commentary will be an abundant resource for a new generation of scholars, pastors, and lay leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new commentary part of Eerdmans s acclaimed NICNT series gives primary attention to John s gospel in its present form rather than the sources or traditions behind it. J. Ramsey Michaels assumes that the John who authored the book is someone very close to Jesus and, therefore, that the gospel is a testimony to events that actually happened in the life of Jesus. Yet Michaels does not ignore the literary character of the gospel of John or its theological contribution to the larger Christian community from its own time to the present day. Through a detailed verse-by-verse commentary, Michaels reveals how the gospel of the disciple whom Jesus loved is a unified composition, intertwined with the synoptics, yet drawing on material none of them cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Old Testament we read God s word as it was spoken to his people Israel. Today, thousands of years later, we hear in these thirty-nine books his inspired and authoritative message for us. These twin convictions, shared by all of the contributors to The New International Commentary on the Old Testament, define the goal of this ambitious series of commentaries. For those many modern readers who find the Old Testament to be strange and foreign soil, the NICOT series serves as an authoritative guide bridging the cultural gap between today s world and the world of ancient Israel. Each NICOT volume aims to help us hear God s word as clearly as possible. Scholars, pastors, and serious Bible students will welcome the fresh light that this commentary series casts on ancient yet familiar biblical texts. The contributors apply their proven scholarly expertise and wide experience as teachers to illumine our understanding of the Old Testament. As gifted writers, they present the results of the best recent research in an interesting manner. Each commentary opens with an introduction to the biblical book, looking especially at questions concerning its background, authorship, date, purpose, structure, and theology. A select bibliography also points readers to resources for their own study. The author s own translation from the original Hebrew forms the basis of the commentary proper. Verse-by-verse comments nicely balance in-depth discussions of technical matters textual criticism, critical problems, and so on with exposition of the biblical writer s theology and its implications for the life of faith today.
