This morning we welcome again as witnesses before the subcommittee the Secretary of the Treasury, William E. Simon, accompanied by the Under Secretary for Monetary Affairs, Jack F. Bennett. Would you identify your associate? Secretary Simon Mr. Charles Cooper, Assistant Secretary, Mr. Chairman. Chairman Reuss. Welcome, sir. We always appreciate the Secretary of the Treasury's candor and helpfulness. Our examination this morning will focus on four major subjects: The outlook for international monetary reform, U.S. policies regarding gold, intervention in exchange markets by the U.S. monetary authorities, and the international energy policy. This is a lot of ground to cover and an extensive list of questions has already been made available to the witnesses in the statement announcing these hearings. Your statement, Secretary Simon, which I have had an opportunity to read over the weekend, is most helpful and gives us a good overview of where we are. Please proceed.
