Book excerpt: From the legendary author of Things Fall Apart—a long-awaited memoir of coming of age in a fragile new nation, and its destruction in a tragic civil war For more than forty years, Chinua Achebe maintained a considered silence on the events of the Nigerian civil war, also known as the Biafran War, of 1967–1970, addressing them only obliquely through his poetry. Decades in the making, There Was a Country is a towering account of one of modern Africa’s most disastrous events, from a writer whose words and courage left an enduring stamp on world literature. A marriage of history and memoir, vivid firsthand observation and decades of research and reflection, There Was a Country is a work whose wisdom and compassion remind us of Chinua Achebe’s place as one of the great literary and moral voices of our age.

Book The Lifeblood of War

  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 428 pages

Download or read book The Lifeblood of War written by Julian Thompson and published by Brassey's (UK) Limited. This book was released on 1991 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book traces the pattern of the part played by logistics in armed conflict, from antiquity to the present day. The main emphasis of the book is on campaigns dating from the Korean War of 1950 onwards, but three selected campaigns from World War II produce a run-in for what is to follow - as indeed does his briefer coverage of earlier conflicts. As a former brigade commander in the Falklands War of 1982, Thompson draws a picture of what was, in effect, a microcosm of a much larger affair, the special circumstances of that experience offering a wide spectrum of logistic problems. He concludes with a look at the war on the Central Front that never was, and casts a glance into the future in the light of the impending changes for the defence of Europe.

Book Admiral Bill Halsey

Download or read book Admiral Bill Halsey written by Thomas Alexander Hughes and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Halsey was the most famous naval officer of World War II. His fearlessness in carrier raids against Japan, his steely resolve at Guadalcanal, and his impulsive blunder at the Battle of Leyte Gulf made him the “Patton of the Pacific” and solidified his reputation as a decisive, aggressive fighter prone to impetuous errors of judgment in the heat of battle. In this definitive biography, Thomas Hughes punctures the popular caricature of the “fighting admiral” to reveal the truth of Halsey’s personal and professional life as it was lived in times of war and peace. Halsey, the son of a Navy officer whose alcoholism scuttled a promising career, committed himself wholeheartedly to naval life at an early age. An audacious and inspiring commander to his men, he met the operational challenges of the battle at sea against Japan with dramatically effective carrier strikes early in the war. Yet his greatest contribution to the Allied victory was as commander of the combined sea, air, and land forces in the South Pacific during the long slog up the Solomon Islands chain, one of the war’s most daunting battlegrounds. Halsey turned a bruising slugfest with the Japanese navy into a rout. Skillfully mediating the constant strategy disputes between the Army and the Navy—as well as the clashes of ego between General Douglas MacArthur and Admiral Chester Nimitz—Halsey was the linchpin of America’s Pacific war effort when its outcome was far from certain.

Book Another Africa

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chinua Achebe
  • Publisher : Doubleday
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Another Africa written by Chinua Achebe and published by Doubleday. This book was released on 1998 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two great talents have joined together to create a unique d gorgeous book that fuses photographs, poetry, and text to create a view of present-day Africa that moves beyond the stereotypes commonly held by most Westerners. There are no shots of beautiful sand dunes and tropical savannas where herds of wildlife roam. Instead, this work peels away myths to explore the complexity, diversity, and human dimensions of a place called Africa -- one that celebrates the commonplace and exotic simultaneously. The ninety full-color photographs are highly subjective, a personal investigation that reflects the sensibilities, formal concerns, and the ongoing engagement of the photographer Robert Lyons. With the brilliant Chinua Achebe, a Nigerian, contributing his never-before-published poems and an essay, the book takes on another dimension. He presents a concise view of Africa today, including the individual and political issues facing its countries. His poems and his essay, written specifically for this book, deal with Africa on its own terms -- from within. This beautifully produced book with text by a "magical writer -- one of the greatest of the twentieth century" (Margaret Atwood) will be irresistible to anyone interested in Africa.

  • Pages : 360 pages

Book excerpt: A forensic investigation of the Battle of Savo Island where in August of 1942 Japanese strike forces snuck up on heavily guarded allied cruisers and destroyed four ships, sinking two of them. Loxton, wounded during the battle, exposes some of the myths surrounding this monumental defeat through an examination of American, Japanese, and Australian records, concluding with a "verdict" that cuts through naval misinformation and explains how such an event could have occurred. The writing conveys the single minded passion which the author follows to discover the truth of a military defeat which, because of his involvement, became a life obsession. Book Postmodern Analysis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jürgen Jost
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 3662036355
  • Pages : 350 pages

Download or read book Postmodern Analysis written by Jürgen Jost and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the title of this book intended to signify, what connotations is the adjective "Postmodern" meant to carry? A potential reader will surely pose this question. To answer it, I should describe what distinguishes the approach to analysis presented here from what has been called "Modern Analysis" by its protagonists. "Modern Analysis" as represented in the works of the Bour baki group or in the textbooks by Jean Dieudonne is characterized by its systematic and axiomatic treatment and by its drive towards a high level of abstraction. Given the tendency of many prior treatises on analysis to degen erate into a collection of rather unconnected tricks to solve special problems, this definitively represented a healthy achievement. In any case, for the de velopment of a consistent and powerful mathematical theory, it seems to be necessary to concentrate solelyon the internal problems and structures and to neglect the relations to other fields of scientific, even of mathematical study for a certain while. Almost complete isolation may be required to reach the level of intellectual elegance and perfection that only a good mathematical theory can acquire. However, once this level has been reached, it might be useful to open one's eyes again to the inspiration coming from concrete ex ternal problems.
