Download or read book The International Karakoram Project Volume 1 written by K. J. Miller and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-01-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, this volume and its companion relate to the work of a group of 70 scientists from Britain, China, Pakistan, Switzerland and the USA who visited the highest mountains in the world during the summer of 1980 to conduct a series of inter-related studies. Supported by the leading learned societies and professional institutions in Britain, China and Pakistan, and by government agencies in these countries, the International Karakoram Project was an expedition that fused several individual topics in the earth sciences into a unified and single study of the world's most chaotic, unstable landform. The whole project was promoted as the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Geographical Society. This volume details many of the techniques, systems, instrumentation and methods of analysis used on the Project, whilst Volume 2 concentrates on the results obtained by the scientists during the course of the Project.

Book Environmental Change in South Asia

Download or read book Environmental Change in South Asia written by Anup Saikia and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on South Asia are an emerging interdisciplinary field, this volume expands on the currently limited literature available on South Asia and focuses on the regions environmental, climatic and natural resource base by looking at case studies from Nepal, India and Bangladesh. The book contains twelve chapters which deal with various environmental challenges, such as the impacts of climate change on floods and droughts, population structure and regeneration dynamics of dominant treeline species, environmental changes and rural livelihoods, and change analysis and impacts of hard coastal structures. Apart from the various thematic areas and diversity of geographical coverage, most of the studies also demonstrate the application of geospatial techniques for the collection of environmental data, and the use of GIS for spatial analysis of the data. The specific application of geospatial techniques and methods includes NDVI, NDWI, NDBI, SMI, SPOT-VGT NDVI, environmental flow, distribution and trend estimation of tropospheric formaldehyde, vegetation sensitivity to climate change, variability of tropospheric ozone, and geo-environmental problems. The contributors are seasoned researchers currently engaged in academic and research activities, and work at universities in USA, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Japan.

Book Glaciers of the Karakoram Himalaya

Download or read book Glaciers of the Karakoram Himalaya written by Kenneth Hewitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Karakoram contains the greatest concentration of glaciers and most of the largest ice masses outside high latitudes. They comprise major stores and sources of fresh water in an otherwise extreme, continental, dry region. As many as 200 million people living downstream, in the valleys of the Indus and Yarkand Rivers, depend on melt waters from snow and ice. They are at risk from climate-change impacts on glaciers and water supply, and from hazards such as glacial lake outburst floods. Useful research initiatives go back to the nineteenth century, but coverage has generally been limited geographically and has not been continuous over time. It is almost 80 years since a monograph was devoted to the Karakoram glaciers. The book presents a comprehensive overview, including statistics for the ice cover, glacier mass balance and dynamics, glacierized landscapes, rock glaciers, water resources and environmental hazards. Published glaciological and related research is surveyed along with expedition reports and archival materials in several languages. The expanding potential of satellite coverage is exploited, but conditions and processes reported from field investigations are the main focus. Previously unpublished observations by the author are presented, based on some 45 years of work in the region. Broad understanding of the glacial environment is used to address emerging concerns about the High Asian cryosphere and the fate of its glaciers. These are discussed in relation to the pressing issues of water supply, environmental risk and sustainability. Questions of what is not known help identify much needed monitoring and research. The book is of interest to researchers, professionals, and those studying glaciers, mountain environments, water resources and environmental hazards. The topics discussed should be of concern for anyone involved in regional development and global change in South and Inner Asia.

Book The Political Ecology of Pakistan

Download or read book The Political Ecology of Pakistan written by Gholam Mujtaba and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pakistan is about to play a pivotal role in global politics. Serving as a gateway to the Middle East and a conduit to Central and South Asia, it will be a crucial partner as the United States contends with China’s rise as an emerging global superpower and seeks to maintain its hegemony in the region. The problem is, for many people in the West, Pakistan is somewhat of a black box, with few Westerners understanding the country’s complex history and current political reality. The Political Ecology of Pakistan aims to change this by outlining the geopolitical history of Pakistan since the country gained independence in 1947, focusing in particular on the military’s ongoing role in state affairs and the struggle for democracy to take root in the region. In addition, this book outlines Pakistan’s improved economy, internal security, religious harmony, equality of opportunity, corruption-free society, and growing transparency and accountability, all of which will make the country a vital partner in securing and maintaining peace in the region. This information will be of interest to policymakers as well as those who are seeking to understand Pakistan’s geopolitical significance.
