Book In the World Interior of Capital

Download or read book In the World Interior of Capital written by Peter Sloterdijk and published by Polity. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Displaying the distinctive combination of narration and philosophy for which he is well known, this new book by Peter Sloterdijk develops a radically new account of globalization at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The author takes seriously the historical and philosophical consequences of the notion of the earth as a globe, arriving at the thesis that what is praised or decried as globalization is actually the end phase in a process that began with the first circumnavigation of the earth Ð and that one can already discern elements of a new era beyond globalization. In the end phase of globalization, the world system completed its development and, as a capitalist system, came to determine all conditions of life. Sloterdijk takes the Crystal Palace in London, the site of the first world exhibition in 1851, as the most expressive metaphor for this situation. The palace demonstrates the inevitable exclusivity of globalization as the construction of a comfort structure Ð that is, the establishment and expansion of a world interior whose boundaries are invisible, yet virtually insurmountable from without, and which is inhabited by one and a half billion winners of globalization; three times this number are left standing outside the door.

"One of the funniest books of the year.... A delicious, ambitious Hollywood satire." —The Washington Post Willis Wu doesn’t perceive himself as the protagonist in his own life: he’s merely Generic Asian Man. Sometimes he gets to be Background Oriental Making a Weird Face or even Disgraced Son, but always he is relegated to a prop. Yet every day, he leaves his tiny room in a Chinatown SRO and enters the Golden Palace restaurant, where Black and White, a procedural cop show, is in perpetual production. He’s a bit player here, too, but he dreams of being Kung Fu Guy—the most respected role that anyone who looks like him can attain. Or is it? After stumbling into the spotlight, Willis finds himself launched into a wider world than he’s ever known, discovering not only the secret history of Chinatown, but the buried legacy of his own family. Infinitely inventive and deeply personal, exploring the themes of pop culture, assimilation, and immigration—Interior Chinatown is Charles Yu’s most moving, daring, and masterful novel yet.

Book The Art of the Interior

Download or read book The Art of the Interior written by Barbara Stoeltie and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated volume is a tribute to the designers who have made a lasting contribution to the history of interior design around the world, elevating the interior to an art form. John Saladino and Jacques Garcia are renowned contemporary designers; the clean lines and light-filled interiors of the former contrast with the luxurious, richly colored spaces created by the latter. But who were the leading designers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and which elements of their legacy remain relevant in interior design today? Respected interiors specialists Barbara and René Stoeltie chart the evolution of interior design from the seventeenth century to the present day and share their selection of significant designers from the last four hundred years. Arranged chronologically, the text places the designers in their historical context and details the primary elements that characterized their style or revolutionized taste in their day. The photographs provide a visually evocative overview of the designers’ key works, illustrating the overall impact of the room and the details that make each space memorable. These portraits of the designers and their chefs d’oeuvres demonstrate the aesthetic principles and creativity that shaped the history of interior design. From eighteenth-century interiors by Dennis Severs to Billy Baldwin’s elegant yet livable home design, or from Madeleine Castaing’s eclectic creations that blended antiques with art to the gracious curves and pastel hues of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s art nouveau Hill House, and from Bill Willis’s interpretation of Orientalism in Marrakech to the clean and graphic lines of Andrée Putman’s sleek interiors, this volume abounds with inspiration.

Book The Imagery of Interior Spaces

Download or read book The Imagery of Interior Spaces written by Michael J. Kelly and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2019 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the unstable boundaries between "interior" and "exterior," "private" and "public," and always in some way relating to a "beyond," the imagery of interior space in literature reveals itself as an often disruptive code of subjectivity and of modernity. The wide variety of interior spaces elicited in literature -- from the odd room over the womb, secluded parks, and train compartments, to the city as a world under a cloth -- reveal a common defining feature: these interiors can all be analyzed as codes of a paradoxical, both assertive and fragile, subjectivity in its own unique time and history. They function as subtexts that define subjectivity, time, and history as profoundly ambiguous realities, on interchangeable existential, socio-political, and epistemological levels. This volume addresses the imagery of interior spaces in a number of iconic and also lesser known yet significant authors of European, North American, and Latin American literature of the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries: Djuna Barnes, Edmond de Goncourt, William Faulkner, Gabriel García Márquez, Benito Pérez Galdós, Elsa Morante, Robert Musil, Jules Romains, Peter Waterhouse, and Émile Zola.
