Book Health Hazards and Public Debate

Download or read book Health Hazards and Public Debate written by Carlos Dora and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is based on research into the strategies used to communicate information to the public about the risks of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) and CJD (Creutzfeldt Jakob disease) in four European countries (the UK, Germany, Italy and Finland) between 1985 and 2000, through political means and health information systems as well as through mass media reporting of the issue. It considers the lessons to be learned from the BSE/CJD crisis, given the need for timely and effective communication on real and perceived risks in such situations, both to prevent and to respond to food and environmental health scares. The book approaches the debate about effective risk communication as an evolving and interactive process between decision makers and their publics, and emphasises the importance of creating mechanisms for interaction at all stages of policy-making. Using a range of qualitative and quantitative methods, the research also looks at the way people construct their perceptions about risk and how they make decisions on risk avoidance.

Book excerpt: This volume is concerned mainly with the potential pathway for BSE infection posed by the use of veterinary and human medicines using animal tissues. The arrangements covering the safety of medicines and medical devices and the response to BSE over the period 1987-96 is described. The volume goes on to review action taken on cosmetics and toiletries, which shared features with topical medicines but were not covered by the provisions of the Medicines Act. It concludes by examining the events that surround the failure to prepare a comprehensive audit of uses of bovine tissues. Charts illustrate the extent of the uses of bovine material and the complex interaction of the many industries involved, the degree of recycling and the various ultimate disposal outlets.

Individual chapters of the book analyze the roles of science, culture, and risk perception, and of mass media and attitudes towards eating. An additional section describes the interface between scientists and lay people with regard to policy-making and agricultural practice.

Book Management of Health Risks from Environment and Food

Download or read book Management of Health Risks from Environment and Food written by Hajime Sato and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the policy and politics of two health risks, which have recently become prominent social issues in many countries. One is the issue of asbestos as an environmental risk to humans, and another is that of bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE), or mad cow disease as an animal disease, and of its variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) as a human food risk. Employing a set of analytical frameworks in political science, each case study explores how the issues emerged, agendas got set, alternatives were chosen, and policies were implemented. Through the analysis, it is examined how safety and public reassurance were pursued in the countries studied (Japan, the UK, France the USA, and Korea). Exploration of the successes and failures in their efforts discloses the key elements to successful health risk management.

Book Quantitative Methods for Current Environmental Issues

Download or read book Quantitative Methods for Current Environmental Issues written by Clive W. Anderson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is increasingly clear that good quantitative work in the environmental sciences must be genuinely interdisciplinary. This volume, the proceedings of the first combined TIES/SPRUCE conference held at the University of Sheffield in September 2000, well demonstrates the truth of this assertion, highlighting the successful use of both statistics and mathematics in important practical problems. It brings together distinguished scientists and engineers to present the most up-to-date and practical methods for quantitative measurement and prediction and is organised around four themes: - spatial and temporal models and methods; - environmental sampling and standards; - atmosphere and ocean; - risk and uncertainty. Quantitative Methods for Current Environmental Issues is an invaluable resource for statisticians, applied mathematicians and researchers working on environmental problems, and for those in government agencies and research institutes involved in the analysis of environmental issues.
