Book excerpt: Studies on the electrochemical processes at the interface between two immiscible liquids began a long time ago: they date back to the end of the last century. Such celebrated scientists as Nemst and Haber, and also young A. N. Frumkin were among those who originated this science. Later A. N. Frumkin went a long way in furthering the studies at the Institute of Electrochemistry. The theory of the appearance of potential in a system of two immiscible electrolytes was developed and experimentally verified before the beginning of the thirties. In later years the studies in this area considerably lagged behind those conducted at metal electrodes which were widely used in different industries. In the past 15 years, however, the situation has radically changed and we have witnessed a drastic increase in the number of publications on the electrochemistry of immiscible electrolytes. We are glad to note that the investiga tions show not only a quantitative but also a qualitative change. The theoretical works on the oil/water interface test not only the thermodynamic aspects of the inter face but also recreate the molecular picture of the process. Along with the now con ventional oilfwater system, electrochemical studies are made on various membranes, including the frnest bilayer lipid membranes, and also on microemulsion systems. A prominent place in the investigation of the oil/water interface is occupied by photoprocesses that come into play at the interface between two ionic conductors.

Book excerpt: We have again brought together for the Third International Symposium on Charge and Field Effects in Biosystems (July 21-27, 1991), a group of scientists whose interests reside in the fields of bioelectrochemistry, bioenergetics, and bioelectric phenomena. Like the previous symposia at the University of Nottingham (1983) and Virginia Commonwealth University (1989) the topics discussed were related to bioelectric phenomena, including solid state theoretical and experimental approaches to charge and energy transfer in biomolecular and cellular systems, ion and electron transport properties of biological and artifical membranes, the effects of electric fields on biological systems, photoinduced bioelectrochemical phenomena, and the applications of bioelectrochemical technology. The present conference also introduced procedures which may well serve to define the mechanisms of various bioelectrical phenomena, including electroporation for gene transfer and electro fusion for hybridoma formation. Book excerpt: The objectives of the ARW were: - identifying areas and highlighting approaches by which large Supramolecular (SM) Assemblies can be synthesised - reviewing and combining methods to characterise and analyse such assemblies. The first part of the ARW is devoted to reviewing synthetic achievements in recent years for several families of SM compounds, and to bringing out principles for crystal structure design, including novel quantum mechanical methods. Synthesis pertains both to the chemical synthesis of components for SM assembly, and to the subsequent assembly process based on complementarity and non-covalent interactions. The elaboration of multiple recognition "algorithms" concurrently employed (for instance, 1t-1t and hydrogen bonds) has recently reached a high degree of sophistication in the sequence: Molecules -7 Supermolecule -7 SM array -7 Crystal or Conglomerate Novel Large Assemblies comprise synthetic entities with molecular weight as high as 15000, and hybrid SM assemblies between synthetic molecules and DNA. Further developments are foreseen at a higher level of organisation, such as between supermolecules or with electromagnetic fields in photochemical processes. Creation of 2D Assemblies is now a powerful tool for creation and study of SM interactions. Moreover, much is to be learned in going from 2D to 3D assemblies in crystal growth and other forms of organisation such as micelles or liquid crystals. On the other hand, crystal engineering based on Molecular Recognition in the Crystal State leads to novel 2D assemblies occurring within predesigned crystal structures (hydrophobic organic clays or nanoporous networks).
