Download or read book Consideration of the Claims and Conduct of the United States written by Henry Bliss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consideration of the Claims and Conduct of the United States: Respecting Their North Eastern Boundary, and on the Value of the British Colonies in North America The dominions of Great Britain are so vast in extent, so divided in situation, and so various in their relations, that their general and respec tive interests must often distract, and sometimes perhaps escape, the attention even of the ablest and most vigilant government. The internal oeconomy of a highly civilized and redundant population, and the foreign policy of war or peace in Europe, Whose political questions are generally more important, and always more in viting, than those of distant and less cultivated Countries, so entirely engross the public mind, that it is not surprising, if the concerns of some remote and obscurer Provinces of the empire should sometimes meet with less consideration. Book America and Britain Classic Reprint

Download or read book America and Britain Classic Reprint written by Andrew Cunningham McLaughlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America and Britain As an admirer of Great Britain, I have felt free to speak quite openly and have not allowed myself merely to indulge in pleasantries and oratorical adulation. I have referred without reserve to the prejudices and misunderstand ings of the past, which we hope are now laid definitely aside, and I have not shrunk from giving my own opinion of Britain's errors. If I seem to dwell on them too much, it is because I have desired not to give the appearance of avoiding disagreeable truths or what, at least, I deem to be truths. It is a privilege to speak in a frank and friendly way to a tolerant and kindly people. The article called the Background of American Federalism may be of interest at the present time when so many persons in Brit ain are discussing federalism, and if correct in its analysis of the disputes of the American Revolution - as I am confident after many years of study it is - it discloses, not only that the old British Empire is the source of the central principle of federalism, but also that the politi cal problem now holding the attention of Brit ish students and men of affairs is in its es sence of very long standing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were 26—not 13—British colonies in America in 1776. Of these, the six colonies in the Caribbean—Jamaica, Barbados, the Leeward Islands, Grenada and Tobago, St. Vincent; and Dominica—were among the wealthiest. These island colonies were closely related to the mainland by social ties and tightly connected by trade. In a period when most British colonists in North America lived less than 200 miles inland and the major cities were all situated along the coast, the ocean often acted as a highway between islands and mainland rather than a barrier. The plantation system of the islands was so similar to that of the southern mainland colonies that these regions had more in common with each other, some historians argue, than either had with New England. Political developments in all the colonies moved along parallel tracks, with elected assemblies in the Caribbean, like their mainland counterparts, seeking to increase their authority at the expense of colonial executives. Yet when revolution came, the majority of the white island colonists did not side with their compatriots on the mainland. A major contribution to the history of the American Revolution, An Empire Divided traces a split in the politics of the mainland and island colonies after the Stamp Act Crisis of 1765-66, when the colonists on the islands chose not to emulate the resistance of the patriots on the mainland. Once war came, it was increasingly unpopular in the British Caribbean; nonetheless, the white colonists cooperated with the British in defense of their islands. O'Shaughnessy decisively refutes the widespread belief that there was broad backing among the Caribbean colonists for the American Revolution and deftly reconstructs the history of how the island colonies followed an increasingly divergent course from the former colonies to the north.

This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Philosophical and Political History of the British Settlements and Trade in North America England was only known in America by her piracies, which were often successful and always brilliant, when Sir Walter Raleigh conceived a project to make his nation partake of the prodigious riches which for near a century past flowed from that hemisphere into ours. That great man, who was born for bold undertakings, cast his eye on the eastern coast of North-America. The talent he had for subduing the mind by representing all his proposals in a striking light, soon procured him associates, both at court and amongst the merchants. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the United States of North America, Vol. 3 of 4: From the Plantation of the British Colonies Till Their Revolt and Declaration of Independence Compelling them yet to acknowledge their duty, and consult their true interests. William was so far moved by this re presentation, as to recommend to the provincial assembly a more deliberate consideration of the governor's proposition; and he even condescended to repeat the arguments which Nicholson had already unsuccessfully employed. But these reasons gained no additional currency from the stamp of royal sanction. The king's project encountered again the most determined rejection from the assembly; and his argument elicited from them only a firm but respectful remonstrance, in which they declared their conviction that neither the forts then in being, nor any other that might be built in the pro vince of New York, could in the slightest degree avail to the defence and security of Virginia: for that either the French or the northern Indians might invade this colony, and yet not approach within a hundred miles of any of those forts. Nicholson had relied with undoubting assurance on the success of this attempt: and the issue of it, which discon certed his ambitious hopes, destroyed his popularity, and discredited the policy of his counsels by lowering the dignity of the king, inspired him with the most vindictive feelings of rage and mortification. Henceforward, he took no pains to conceal his antipathy to the institution of representative assemblies, and to the democratical frame of the provincial governments. He represented to the British ministers that the dissent of the Virginian assembly from his majesty's desire and opinion, proceeded entirely from a spirit of te bellion, and a propensity to national independence and republican government;1 - charges which, as they coincided with the fears and jealousies of the parent state, were most likely to provoke her jealousy and malevolence towards the colony. Blending a regard to policy, with the gratification of his resentment, and h0ping to impress the credulous with a high opinion of his munificence and public spirit, he protested. Book excerpt: A both controversial and comprehensive historical analysis of how the British Empire worked, from Wolfson Prize-winning author and historian John Darwin The British Empire shaped the world in countless ways: repopulating continents, carving out nations, imposing its own language, technology and values. For perhaps two centuries its expansion and final collapse were the single largest determinant of historical events, and it remains surrounded by myth, misconception and controversy today. John Darwin's provocative and richly enjoyable book shows how diverse, contradictory and in many ways chaotic the British Empire really was, controlled by interests that were often at loggerheads, and as much driven on by others' weaknesses as by its own strength.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union of the Colonies of British North America: Being Three Papers Upon This Subject, Originally Published Between the Years 1854 and 1861 The dates appended to the several titles of the following papers indicate the time at which they were respectively published. They are the results of perhaps the most note worthy, and certainly the most public efforts which, ever since 1849, the author has, within what seemed not beyond the possible limits of his direct or indirect influence, persistently made, on every seemingly fitting occasion, to advance the great political scheme which these essays advocate. They were, at the respective times of their original publication, pretty generally circulated by the author himself among the more prominent statesmen and politicians of the North Amer ican Colonies, and, to a more limited extent, of england also. With these classes they so far met with favor as to be, each of them, republished in full in several of the British Amer ican political journals and other periodicals, and in part by several of those of the United Kingdom.
