Book excerpt: There are two urgent, major and progressive themes calling ever more loudly and persistently through current developments in therapy theory, practice and training—particularly within work with families and couples. These have been: Firstly, the need to work sensitively, wisely and constructively and be attentive to differences in cultures within relationships that present in the therapy room. Secondly, is the need to become able to work within evidence-based practices that can cut across different schools of psychotherapy. That is, to be aware, or part of, a “third wave” of psychotherapy practice that unites themes and practices across formerly divided trainings. A currently well-equipped clinician should be able to employ and understand techniques and ideas from a range of therapies, using these in a way that is coherent with their basic therapeutic training and stance. A currently well-equipped clinician should be able to understand and be alert to nuances of cultural differences that will necessarily be playing out within couples and families that present for therapy, or that an individual brings in her individual narrative as it may unfold within the therapy room for individual therapy. Yet there has been no single coherent model of therapy theory, training and practice, until now, that unites these two major themes. According to the most recent United States census, these couples have a higher rate of divorce than couples whose members are from the same cultural background (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018). This dissertation explores the lived experience of intercultural couples navigating a process of third culture building, where couples come together to create shared understanding that bridges cultural differences and fortifies their relationship. Third culture building has been theorized in the fields of cross-cultural psychology (Wood, 2000), cross cultural communication (Casmir, 1993), and couples' therapy (Hsu, 2001) but has not been examined from an empirical stance. In this phenomenological dissertation, 6 qualitative interviews were conducted with intercultural couples in the San Francisco Bay Area. Participants were interviewed together as couples about their experiences navigating cultural differences. Data were analyzed using a qualitative phenomenological method. Analysis of these interviews yielded five themes: (a) couples make efforts to understand one another amidst miscommunication; (b) empathy, patience, and humility are generated; (c) couples have increased reflection about their own inherited worldviews and traits; (d) couples found strength in establishing some novel shared values; and (e) couples navigated dynamics of power and transformed hierarchies within the relationship. The discussion links the themes presented to previous theory about third culture building and provides suggestions for future research.

Book excerpt: The number of intercultural marriages has grown significantly in the past few decades, as have the numbers of intercultural couples presenting for marital and family therapy. Current literature on intercultural relationships states that they are at a high risk for failure, with higher divorce rates and lower marital satisfaction reported than for same culture marriages. Few actual research studies have been conducted to prove or disprove these theories, and no studies have looked at how successful couples have dealt with the stressors stated in the literature such that they remain married and report high marital satisfaction. This study was an exploratory study on the stress and coping techniques successful couples have utilized in their relationships, based on the ABCX model of stress and coping. Six couples were interviewed on what stressors they have faced, what resources they have accessed and built to combat those stressors, and what their perceptions of their challenges have been.
