Book Calcium Carbonate Interaction with Organic Compounds

Download or read book Calcium Carbonate Interaction with Organic Compounds written by Erwin Suess and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dissolved organic compounds interact with the surface of calcium carbonate minerals and effect simple inorganic equilibration between solution and solid. Organo-carbonate associations form between stearic acid and calcite and dolomite, and between albumin and aragonite, calcite, and Mg-calcite. When stearic acid interacts with these minerals in hexane solution, a complete monolayer forms on the calcite surface, and half of a layer forms on the dolomite surface. When stearic acid and carbonate minerals interact in aqueous solution, the amount absorbed is not sufficient to form a complete monolayer of pure stearic acid, although hydrated surface complexes appear to be large enough to completely cover the surface of the minerals. At low concentrations in water, albumin forms a complete monolayer on carbonate minerals. At higher concentrations, multilayers or unoriented aggregates form. Organo-carbonate associations affect the calcium carbonate equilibrium in solution by physically isolating the mineral surface and by reducing the surface free energy of the solid. Surface seawater, deep water, and interstitial water show inorganic equilibration at different calcite to seawater ratios. These ratios are constant for one seawater sample whether equilibrium is approached from under- or oversaturation. (Author).

Book Colloids and Interfaces in Oil Recovery

Download or read book Colloids and Interfaces in Oil Recovery written by Spencer Taylor and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well-known that colloid and interface science and petroleum production are inextricably linked. Whether in the reservoir, with its porous structure, or during recovery, crude oil is intimately associated with rock surfaces and with water, often in the form of emulsions. This situation leads to highly complex systems, comprising multiple colloids and interfaces, which require to be optimized if oil is to be recovered efficiently, both in terms of economic cost and with due concern for the environment. This book contains a compilation of contemporary research topics which illustrate various aspects of the importance of colloids and interfaces in crude oil recovery through modifying conditions between the rock, crude oil, and water in the reservoir, in order to achieve improved oil recovery. The specific topics covered relate both to conventional oils, in which waterflooding is the most common secondary and tertiary means of recovery, and to non-conventional heavy oil and natural bitumen, which require thermal recovery methods, owing to their high viscosity.

Download or read book Hypersaline Environments written by Barbara J. Javor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypersaline environments are the principal habitats of petroleum deposition. They are also of intense evolutionary and ecological interest. This book presents a cross-disciplinary examination of the variety of halophilic microorganisms and their roles in modifying the ecology and geochemistry of hypersaline environments. The book also covers in detail the various inland and coastal habitats where halophilic microorganisms thrive. Geographically, hypersaline environments extend from the tropics to the poles, and from the terrestrial to the submarine. Organisms capable of living in such environments have faced unique evolutionary challenges.

Book Applications of Synchrotron Radiation in Low Temperature Geochemistry and Environmental Science

Download or read book Applications of Synchrotron Radiation in Low Temperature Geochemistry and Environmental Science written by Paul A. Fenter and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 49 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry reviews the state of the art of synchrotron radiation applications in low temperature geochemistry and environmental science, and offer speculations on future developments. The reader of this volume will acquire an appreciation of the theory and applications of synchrotron radiation in low temperature geochemistry and environmental science, as well as the significant advances that have been made in this area in the past two decades. It gives a fairly comprehensive overview of synchrotron radiation applications in low temperature geochemistry and environmental science, describes the ways that synchrotron radiation is generated, including a history of synchrotrons and a discussion of aspects of synchrotron radiation that are important to the experimentalist, describes specific synchrotron methods that are most useful for single-crystal surface and mineral-fluid interface studies as well as methods that can be used more generally for investigating complex polyphase fine-grained or amorphous materials, including soils, rocks, and organic matter.

Book An AFM Investigation of the Interaction of Chiral Amino Acids with the 104 Face of Calcite

Download or read book An AFM Investigation of the Interaction of Chiral Amino Acids with the 104 Face of Calcite written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In biomineralized tissue, Nature often uses a single crystal system to form tools with widely varied form and functionality. To accomplish this, organisms have developed methods to deterministically modify and control crystal habit, commonly creating shapes with lower symmetry than is possessed by the pure crystal. In this paper we use atomic force microscopy to investigate the effect of chiral amino acids on calcite growth. We show that the atomic steps and resultant macroscopic shape exhibit a lower symmetry that reflects the chirality of the amino acid. We use this result to constrain the possible stereospecific binding sites. We argue that the change in morphology is not due to the incorporation of the amino acid, but rather that it acts like a surfactant changing the energetics of the interface. These results suggest that the conventional paradigm for understanding the geometrical and chemical aspects of biomineralization in terms of stereochemical recognition should be expanded to capture the energetic controls that determine the mechanisms of mineral modification by biomolecules.
