Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intensive Farming The present movement, back to the land, will to a limited extent delay the time when the problem of supply and demand will become acute, but come it surely will in this country as it has in the Orient. While there is a decided movement landward our statistics of population clearly Show the tremendous increase in town and city population as compared with that of the rural community. If this ratio is main tained the time when demand will outrun sup ply will be greatly hastened. But the problems of supplying bread and meat are not the only problems in feeding a nation. Grains and meats, under present conditions, can be trans ported great distances and kept to serve the needs of months and even years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Systematic Small Farming This was all the more likely to be, if not more interesting, certainly more suggestively useful, from the fact that the volume was mainly the record of work done, and experience gained by the practical conduct Of a small farm, on which the Author spent, if not the most useful, assuredly one of the most pleasant periods Of a life which has had many pleasant periods to record and to be grateful for. It was, indeed, the pleasure which the Author derived from the care and cultivation Of his little farm which led him to embody what he had learned on it in a volume which might induce some to take up what is certainly a healthy hobby, and might also be of some service to them in the realisation of all its pleasures. Book My Little Farm Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Little Farm Classic Reprint written by Patrick D. Kenny and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Little Farm This is less a handbook in scientific agriculture than a headbook in profitable farming, but it is for both, and for the cultivation of character as essential to cropping. The profit is no longer possible without the science, but the science must either show the profit or remain under suspicion. The expert, working at the Government's ex pense, can do anything with a plot of half a rood, so long as he is not asked to balance the product against the cost, but the practical farmer wants to see the net profit on a working scale, and he is right, because the final measure of science in all industrial application is the economic value. No other standard can be safely admitted into industrial practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Practical Corn Culture Written Especially for the Corn Belt Farmers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Corn Culture Written Especially for the Corn Belt Farmers Classic Reprint written by William Thomas Ainsworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Corn Culture Written Especially for the Corn Belt Farmers Farmers in the United States are beginning to appreciate the fact that they are not raising as much per acre on their ground as do European farmers. This subject is being brought constantly to their attention by government bulletins, the agricultural press, farmers' institutions, etc. The early settlers on the soil found a virgin fertility which they did not stop to think would some day be exhausted; and they and their successors did little or nothing to compensate the soil for what they took out. We have now come to the point where the subject deserves our serious consideration. We must not only recognize the fact, but must act. The difference in productivity, however, is not due entirely to low soil fertility, but may be influenced by culture and by the time, method, and rate of seeding. Unquestionably each of these factors influence the yield to a considerable extent. When crop prices were low in the United States, the excuse was often given that European farmers could farm better because their farm produce commanded prices which made intensive agriculture profitable with them but not with us. This may have been true twenty years ago, but during the last five years wheat, oats, and especially corn, have brought good prices, in some cases higher than the prices in Europe. Book The Culture of Farm Crops

Download or read book The Culture of Farm Crops written by Henry Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of Farm Crops: A Manual of the Science of Agriculture, and a Hand-Book of Practice for American Farmers Not a farmer of that day, nor a chemist, knew that bones furnished phosphoric acid to plants; or that guano provided in its ammonia the materials from which their gluten and other nitrogenous substances were derived. Indeed the renowned father of agricultural science: Liebig - when he propounded his mineral theory, which was that the ashes of plants contained everything which they drew from the soil, and that if the mineral substances contained in the ashes, were supplied in sufficient quantity to the crops, there would be scarcely a limit to the product, excepting the space in which they were contained - knew nothing about the invaluable nitrogen which we now know to be wholly indispensable to plant growth. But light has grad ually dawned upon us, and by slow and sometimes faltering progress, there has been built up a system of agricultural science which explains the laws of plant growth and affords the most important information to the cultivator of the soil. Science is based upon fact. Philosophy is based upon speculation. Science is the outgrowth of philosophy, be cause before we can reach a true knowledge of any fact we must approach the study of it by a well devised theory, changed as may be necessary, and tested patiently and slowly until the knowledge sought is found. This know ledge, when verified by practice, sufficiently proved and classified, becomes science. Science then is nothing for the farmer to fear, or cast doubt and suspicion upon. Theory as has been said, has no part or lot in it; it is a summary of known facts, and is therefore of the most valuable use to the farmer as it gives him a sound basis upon which to build up such conclusions in regard to his practice as will enable him to meet the various difficulties which are al ways arising in his work. Book Poultry Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poultry Culture Classic Reprint written by Massachusetts State Board Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry Culture In no section of the country is soil better adapted to poultry. Most parts of the State have a light, sandy or gravelly loam. There is no danger, therefore, of its becoming contaminated with droppings, as it is leached out by the heavy rains. On such farms in New England poultry have been kept on the same land for forty years with no serious results. Of course, I refer now especially to poultry farms, not general farms where only a few fowls are kept, and to the extensive rather than the intensive system. Again, much of the soil here is adapted to the growth of corn, mangels, beets and all kinds of green crops for poultry. Its sandy condition gives a quick growth which means tender, palatable green food throughout the growing season. The fact that our soil and climate are well adapted to all kinds of fruit is an advantage that cannot be overlooked. Fruit trees not only yield a crop, but furnish shade in summer and windbreaks in winter. Much Of the soil is well suited to the production of corn, and immense crops can be produced by raising corn and poultry on the same ground in alternate years. Very little fertilizer other than that produced by the poultry need be used, other things being equal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Systematic Farming: A Short Treatise on Present Farming Conditions and How to Improve Them Coming from Nebraska recently, my son said to me, Father, you should write a book on farming, for you have given me lessons in farming, and I raise double the amount of oats and corn the farmers do in Illinois, and my land is no better than my neighbors'. If you can write a book and show the farmers how they can improve their systems of farming, you will be a great public benefactor, and increase the value of farm land in Illinois by teaching how to make the land' better instead of poorer every year. Book Successful Farming

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Farming: How to Farm for Profit, the Latest Methods His methods, and in the second year of his manage ment the farm yielded a profit of two thousand dolhrs; making a difference of seven thousand dollars per year. This is ofi'ered as evidence that_. Mr Rennie' e principles of agriculture are founded on a profit gaining basis; it also proves that a knowledge of these scientific principles is necessary to the success of any farmer. The author recognized this fact. And his purport in writing this book has been to thoroughly explain in simple language the principles of science as applied to farming. All the ideas set forth in the book may be readily carried out; no impracticable theories are advanced. The article on Alfalfa clover is especially valuable, and should be carefuhy studied by every reader of this book. -the sections on the Restoring and Maintaining of Soil Fertility, the Destruction of Noxious Weeds, the Conservation of Soil Moisture, Shallow Plowing and Crop Rotation are also of special importance. Every department of the farm and farm-home has been given the most thorough attention, and if farmers will carry out the easily-followed scientific principles, they may reson ably expect an increase in profits and a saving of labor, which will add pleasure and zest to their daily duties. TO him the exponents of science were book and blackboard farmers, men who, under the most favourable circumstances, could not make a farm pay. I also learned, that, neither the scientist nor the practical man had even touched the fringe Of agricultural economics, or. Attempted to apply business methods to our greatest industry. Book A Small Farm Future

Download or read book A Small Farm Future written by Chris Smaje and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern classic of the new agrarianism "Chris Smaje...shows that the choice is clear. Either we have a small farm future, or we face collapse and extinction."—Vandana Shiva "Every young person should read this book."—Richard Heinberg In a groundbreaking debut, farmer and social scientist Chris Smaje argues that organizing society around small-scale farming offers the soundest, sanest and most reasonable response to climate change and other crises of civilisation—and will yield humanity’s best chance at survival. Drawing on a vast range of sources from across a multitude of disciplines, A Small Farm Future analyses the complex forces that make societal change inevitable; explains how low-carbon, locally self-reliant agrarian communities can empower us to successfully confront these changes head on; and explores the pathways for delivering this vision politically. Challenging both conventional wisdom and utopian blueprints, A Small Farm Future offers rigorous original analysis of wicked problems and hidden opportunities in a way that illuminates the path toward functional local economies, effective self-provisioning, agricultural diversity and a shared earth. Perfect for readers of both Wendell Berry and Thomas Piketty, A Small Farm Future is a refreshing, new outlook on a way forward for society—and a vital resource for activists, students, policy makers, and anyone looking to enact change.

Book The One Man Farm Classic Reprint

Download or read book The One Man Farm Classic Reprint written by Warren R. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The One-Man Farm The results at first seemed startling, particularly in view of the aggregate statistics on farm size in the United States. But one-man farms this large are already found in many farming communities. At the same time, we would caution the reader, as has the author, that on e-man farms this large require managerial skills well above average, achievable by only a minority of the present and would-be farm operators. And yet in each community there probably are enough farm operators with sufficient managerial skills to provide a steady competitive pressure for buying or controlling farmland as it becomes available for transfer. This is the most significant explanation of why farms in general are becoming larger. The intended audience for this essay is the general public. Professional agriculturalists should be aware that the figures in the examples are generalized and not intended to precisely depict widely varying individual farm situations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farming It And it seemed to me that any recital of actual experiences that might possibly deter a person seeking country life as a means of pecuniary profit, from taking the plunge, might perhaps be injudicious. But the more I considered the matter the more I became convinced that the representations of the beautifully illustrated nature-magazines, the seductive stories in Sunday paper supplements, farm and garden pamphlets, seed catalogues, poultry periodicals, pigeon monthlies, and like literature, were a trifle overdrawn, and only too often had the effect of luring the unwary city dweller to forsake the undeniable luxuries and comforts of city life, for the hard, and often, at first, unremunerative labor on a farm. Book Productive Farming Classic Reprint

Download or read book Productive Farming Classic Reprint written by Kary Cadmus Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Productive Farming The demand for the teaching of agriculture in the public schools is growing stronger all the time. In many States of the Union and several provinces of Canada the subject has been introduced into schools very generally. Not only has the subject been taken up in the high-schools, but also in special schools started for the avowed purpose of teaching agriculture, manual training, and domestic economy. This is in response to the very general demand for more practical instruction. The feeling exists that the schools have been doing work too remote from real life; and that where the work has touched the life at all, it has been the city side or the commercial Side rather than the productive side and the industrial side of life. Such training tends to lead all, or nearly all, young people away from rather than toward the industrial and productive callings. The census reports indicate that this tendency has aided in building up the cities and actually decreasing the population in many Of the rural districts. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Large and Small Farms, and Their Influence on the Social Economy: Including a View of the Progress of the Division of the Soil in France Since 1815 Such an Opinion was not long in being propagated by the celebrated school formed in France under the auspices of Dr Quesnay, and which counted in its ranks so many original and able thinkers. According to the theory of this school, the earth alone has the power of remunerating the efforts of man. Owing to its own inherent fecundity, and to the entirely gratui tous action of the natural agents, which aid the de velopment of its powers, it alone reproduces an amount of value exceeding what is consumed by those through whose labour the returns are obtained. So fine an attribute belongs neither to manufactures nor trade, that merely develop or transform the substances drawn from the soil, without possessing any creative power, so that the wealth of communities solely de pends on the amount of the net proceeds which they draw from their agricultural labours.
