Book The Institutional Compass Method Use and Scope

Download or read book The Institutional Compass Method Use and Scope written by Michèle Indira Friend and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents a new generation multi-criteria, multi-stake holder, decision aide, called an "institutional compass". Based on hard data, the compass tells us what quality-direction we are heading in as an institution, region, system or organisation. The quality is not chosen from the usual scalar qualities of: good, neutral and bad. Instead, it is a quality chosen between: harmony, discipline and excitement. None is good in and of itself. We need some of each. The compass marks a new generation in four respects. 1. The representation of the data is intuitive and simple to understand, and therefore can be used to communicate and justify policy decisions. 2. Any data can be included, i.e., none is excluded. This makes the compass tailored to particular situations, voices and contexts. 3. The data includes different time horizons and different types of value: monetary, use, social, sentimental, religious, intrinsic, existential... 4. The process of compass construction can be made inclusive at several junctions. An institutional compass can be extended to evaluate products, add normativity to a systems analysis, reflect world-views such as that of ecological economists or function as an accounting system to manage scarce resources. There are four parts to the book. The first part introduces the general ideas behind the compass. In the second part, the author presents the method for constructing the compass. This includes data collection, data analysis and a mathematical formula to aggregate the data into a single holistic reading. In the third part, the author extends the methodology: to incorporate it into systems science, adding a normative and quality-direction dimension, to use it as a non-linear accounting method and more thoroughly to reflect the philosophy of ecological economists to give a real measure of sustainability. In the fourth part, we see three case studies: one for the World Health Organisation, a second is the use of the compass to label products in a shop and the third is as a regional compass for Hauts-de-France. The book ends with philosophical conclusions. Throughout the book, we see tight arguments, refreshing ideas and a thorough treatment of objectivity in decision making.

Book New Institutional Economics as Situational Logic

Download or read book New Institutional Economics as Situational Logic written by Piet de Vries and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on phenomenological and realist approaches, this book surveys the theoretical evolution of new institutional economics. For all its popularity and explanatory power, new institutional economics is not a homogenous field but encompasses a range of different theoretical approaches starting from Coase and the introduction of transaction costs. In particular, the concept of rationality is a rich source of dispute leading to a bifurcation between ‘insider’ and ‘outsider’ perspectives. The insider view refers to studying conscious human beings – the economic actor – who seek their self-interest and find themselves in their mundane situation. The self-interest of the economic actor bestows him with logic. It makes the logic of the situation the method of economics, as Karl Popper establishes. Thus, the book argues for the positioning of new institutional economics as situational logic, that is, an economic theory that formulates and studies single-exit situations that face the economic actor. Ultimately, this book presents a critical appraisal of new institutional economics theories based on a substantiated methodological perspective that effectively navigates the theorist between realism and rigor. This book will be of interest to readers of new institutional economics, economic theory, and the philosophy of economics and social sciences.

Book Skill Formation Regimes in South Asia

Download or read book Skill Formation Regimes in South Asia written by Markus Maurer and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2011 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of accelerated economic globalisation, many of the industries in economically less developed countries have become more technology-intensive. Skill formation processes, both inside and outside firms, are therefore changing. This study scrutinises such transformations by comparing - from the perspective of historical institutionalism - the skill formation regimes of the garment industries in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It sheds light on the differences between the trajectories of the in-firm skill formation regimes of the two countries, and reveals the important part that varying paths of educational development in both countries have played in shaping these trajectories. At the same time, the study shows how, in both countries, state-led skill formation regimes have been transformed not only by market forces and the growing importance of corporate business interests, but also by the social demand for educational credentials.

Book Computer Games and New Media Cultures

Download or read book Computer Games and New Media Cultures written by Johannes Fromme and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital gaming is today a significant economic phenomenon as well as being an intrinsic part of a convergent media culture in postmodern societies. Its ubiquity, as well as the sheer volume of hours young people spend gaming, should make it ripe for urgent academic enquiry, yet the subject was a research backwater until the turn of the millennium. Even today, as tens of millions of young people spend their waking hours manipulating avatars and gaming characters on computer screens, the subject is still treated with scepticism in some academic circles. This handbook aims to reflect the relevance and value of studying digital games, now the subject of a growing number of studies, surveys, conferences and publications. As an overview of the current state of research into digital gaming, the 42 papers included in this handbook focus on the social and cultural relevance of gaming. In doing so, they provide an alternative perspective to one-dimensional studies of gaming, whose agendas do not include cultural factors. The contributions, which range from theoretical approaches to empirical studies, cover various topics including analyses of games themselves, the player-game interaction, and the social context of gaming. In addition, the educational aspects of games and gaming are treated in a discrete section. With material on non-commercial gaming trends such as ‘modding’, and a multinational group of authors from eleven nations, the handbook is a vital publication demonstrating that new media cultures are far more complex and diverse than commonly assumed in a debate dominated by concerns over violent content.

Book Spiritual Evolution

Download or read book Spiritual Evolution written by Chad Kennedy PHD and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11-04 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where Science Meets Spiritualism Spiritual Evolution: How Science Redefines Our Existence creates a model for spiritual existence that incorporates the most profound scientific discoveries of the last 100 years. Part I guides you through traditional dogma to open up possibilities far beyond what we currently know. Part II takes you through a journey of scientific discoveries and critical insights. From these insights, Professor Kennedy builds a basic model of human existence, redefining what it means to be spiritual in the 21st century. Why are we here? What is spirituality? What is God? Does science offer insights between human beings and the Divine? What is the Universe? How do we reconcile science and spirituality? What is the difference between religion and spirituality? What prevents you from "seeing" outside the box? Professor Kennedy attempts to address these beguiling questions and more by combining modern logic and science with spiritualism. The results will surprise and inspire you. For more interaction with the author go to drchadkennedy.com

Book The Institutional Dynamics of Culture Volumes I and II

Download or read book The Institutional Dynamics of Culture Volumes I and II written by Perri Six and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 1134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes present the most important recent developments in the institutional theory of culture and demonstrate their practical applications. Sometimes called 'grid-group analysis' or 'cultural theory', they derive from the work of Durkheim in the 1880s and 1900s and develop the insights of the anthropologist Mary Douglas and her followers from the 1960s on. First redefined within social and cultural anthropology, the theory's influence is shown in recent years to have permeated all the main disciplines of social science with substantial implications for politics, history, business, work and organizations, the environment, technology and risk, and crime and consumption. Today, the institutional theory of culture now rivals the rational choice, Weberian and postmodern outlooks in influence across the social sciences.
