Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Insect Galls of Indiana For some time I have been working upon a monograph of the Insect Galls of North America. This monograph will be arranged with reference to the plants on which the galls are produced, and special attention will be given to the galls as pathological structures. I should very much appreciate specimens and data from differ ent parts of North America. Most specimens are best sent dry, and should be accompanied by name of host plant or sufficient material for determination. All material and data will be duly credited. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Galls, Vol. 2: Of Springfield, Massachusetts, and Vicinity Within galls may sometimes be found parasites or inquilines. The former, preyin'g directly upon the gall-maker, causes its death, but not until its growth is nearly or quite complete. The inquilines are merely guests within the gall, profiting by the food supply and by the protection. Aside from the collection of the galls of different localities, and the sub sequent summary Of their distribution, two very interesting questions suggest themselves for investigation. First, are these malformations the result Of chemical or Of mechanical action? Second, Of which Of the American gall-makers is it true that there is alternation of generations? The classification of gall-insects will undoubtedly be somewhat altered when this question is answered. Either line suggests a fascinating series Of observations and experiments for the one undertaking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to the Morphology and Biology of Insect Galls In some forms the effect Of the stimulation does not extend beyond the epidermis, on which the producers are located, but in other species it is transmitted throughout the mesophyll of the leaf. The abnormal activity of the epidermis is expressed in the curving and folding of the tissue as well as in the production by it of various forms Of trichomes. In general, when the effect of the stimulation extends to the mesophyll the distinction between the palisade and the spongy parenchyma is lost. In place of these tissues a compact mass of uniform cells is produced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book British Oak Galls Classic Reprint

Download or read book British Oak Galls Classic Reprint written by Edward T. Connold and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Oak Galls The object of this volume is to describe and illus trate, in some measure, galls produced by the Cynipidae and other causes of galls on the Oak. The insects, with their parasites and other occupants of the galls, have been fully described by various writers; several pages will, however, be devoted to a few interesting and unique features of the Cynipidae. This volume is also the fulfilment of an intimation contained in the preface of my British Vegetable Galls, ' explaining the reason why galls on the Oak were not described in that work. I trust the information herein contained may be the means of assisting many students to a further under standing of the subject; that collectors of these most interesting and dainty galls will be enabled to identify any specimen obtained; and, that casual observers will find in the illustrations and the text, such as will influence them to pursue the study in a practical manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Plant-Galls: A Classified Textbook of Cecidology It is said that Dr. Martin Lister (1638 the physician-in-ordinary to Queen Anne, was the first to observe that certain insects are always associated with certain galls. He found gall insects on the Plum, Cherry, Vine, etc., and alluded to them as the patellae of these trees. In 1671 he discovered that from some a permanent dye of a carnation-red colour could be Obtained by mixing them with ley of ashes. The physician Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) was the earliest systematic writer on galls. He published in 1686 a treatise, De Gallis, concerning the galls of Italy and Sicily. His disciple was Dr. Derham, Canon of Windsor, who comments upon Malpighi's observations and his own in the notes to his Boyle Lectures (1711 in which he writes: I find Italy and Sicily more luxuriant in such productions than England, at least than the parts about Upminster (where I live) are. For many, if not most, of the galls about us are taken notice of by him [malpighi], and several others besides that I have never met with, although I have for many years as critically observed all the excrescences and other morbid. Tumours of vegetables as is almost possible, and do believe that few of them have escaped me. Derham was fully aware that galls may contain parasites, and quaintly remarks: I apprehend we see many vermicules, towards the outside of many oak apples, which I guess were not what the primitive insects laid up in the germ from which the oak-apple had its rise, but from some supervenient additional insects, laid in after the apple was grown, and whilst it was tender and soft.
