Book Plant Bugs Injurious to Cotton Bolls Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant-Bugs Injurious to Cotton Bolls Damage by the boll weevil has brought into prominence many other insects which attack the cotton plant, the work of which has been largely overlooked. Among the most important of these minor insects are various species of plant-bugs. Many of these have been known as enemies of the cotton plant for some years, but they have received only slight attention from economic entomologists. When their damage is added to the injury done by the cotton boll weevil, still further reducing the crop, they become of such importance that full knowledge of their habits and life history is demanded. The studies upon which this bulletin is based were conducted to add to our knowledge of the biology of an important group of insect pests and of the most practical and efficient methods by which they may be controlled. Book Cotton Or Weevils Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cotton Or Weevils Classic Reprint written by Jesse Lee Webb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton, or Weevils Insects, like all other living creatures, need food. But their eating is often of considerable importance to man because they injure or destroy crops upon which he depends for food, clothing, or other necessities. Consider the boll weevil. To keep alive it must have green plant food. There are only two or three plants that it will eat, and cotton is one of them - ih fact, the one. It much prefers. When the weevil cannot get cotton, however, it will feed on other plants, such as okra. And hollyhocks, which are close relatives-of cotton. The fact that this weevil feeds almost entirely on cotton is very important. When an insect eats only one kind of plant, it must have a great deal more of that plant each day for its food than it would need if it ate several kinds. Insects increase very fast and eat so much of their food plant that there is sometimes not enough left for man to use. This is true of the boll weevil. Each year there are millions of these weevils and they get hungry every day If there is no way to destroy them in the cotton fields, they will eat so much of the crop that there will not be enough left to pav the plant ers for growing it. Book Hibernation of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hibernation of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil Until this time the hibernation of the bell weevil has been less understood than any other phase of its life history. This was due to the great difficulty in obtaining the necessary data and the fact that the phenomena of hibernation are not necessarily identical in different seasons. In fact, it will be seen from the following pages that there have been very important dissimilarities between the years when special observations have been under way. The necessary repeated work in large cages in different localities has now been carried on and extensive field observations have been made in various representative parts of the infested area as to the natural situations in which the hibernating weevils occur. As a result, the present bulletin will make the life history of the bell weevil during the winter season at least as well known as any other portion of its biology. In the work leading to this bulletin practical considerations have always received primary attention. However, it has repeatedly been shown that careful detailed investigations of injurious insects may result in important suggestions for control that are not foreseen at the beginning of the work. Therefore the tepic of the hibernation of the boll weevil has been investigated from every possible standpoint. Its importance, as a critical period in the life history of a most injuri ous pest, has abundantly warranted this work. Book Birds That Eat the Cotton Boll Weevil

Download or read book Birds That Eat the Cotton Boll Weevil written by Arthur H. Howell and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds That Eat the Cotton Boll Weevil: A Report of Progress The problem of controlling the ravages of the cotton boll weevil in the United States is of such moment that it is being studied by the Department of Agriculture from a number of different standpoints. One of these is the relation of birds to the weevil. Accurate informa tion as to the value of our native birds as destroyers of this pest is of considerable importance to the cotton grower, but such information can be obtained only by means of careful and continued observation in the field, supplemented by study of the stomach contents of the birds. Field observations alone, unverified by stomach examinations, have proved unreliable. Birds may be observed picking insects from cotton plants, but it does not follow that the insects are boll weevils; nor is the statement that boll weevils have been found in birds' stomachs, if made by persons unaccustomed to the identification of insects, to be accepted as conclusive. Insect remains in a bird's stomach are nearly always in a more or less disintegrated condition, so that identification of the species is difficult and requires the services of a specialist. Investigation of the problem was begun by the Biological Survey in the fall of 1904 under the direction of Vernon Bailey. The results of this study, with a summary of work done by the Bureau of Entomology, were published in a special bulletin by Mr. Bailey in Stomachs of 38 species of birds were examined, and 11 species were found to have eaten boll weevils. The number of species known to feed on the weevil was increased to 20. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-08-19 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Parasites of the Cotton Boll Weevil The boll weevil has been present in the United States for fourteen years. At this time it is doing serious damage to cotton in four States, and during the present season undoubtedly will invade a fifth. In regions like Central America, where the insect has existed for many years, there are various influences that serve to hold it in check. In this country Similar influences are beginning to be in evidence. Among the direct factors in the natural control Of the boll weevil that are now at work are the following: Heat and dry ness, the native ant Solenopsis geminata, winter temperatures, proliferation, parasites, defoliation by the cotton leaf-worm, deter minate growth, and birds. Of these, proliferation and birds have already received careful special attention, while the work of the native ant has received preliminary notice. The other factors have also been more or less discussed in the publications of the Bureau of Entomology and elsewhere, and more extensive studies of certain ones will be discussed by Dr. W. E. Hinds in Bulletin No. 74 of this Bureau. While the work of parasites, discussed in this bulletin, is not. At present one Of the most important factors in the control of the boll weevil, the indications are clear that its importance will grow rapidly. Moreover, the matter has special interest for the reason that it is not unlikely that practical means may be devised to increase the work of the parasites. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil: A Revision and Amplification of Bulletin 45, to Include the Most Important Observations Made in 1904 The present bulletin is based upon Bulletin N o. 45, of this Bureau entitled The Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil, issued in May, 1904. That publication included the results of investigations of this impor tant pest which had been carried on for several years. The present bulletin includes additional results that were obtained during the sea son of 1904. In form the principal changes are in the incorporation of the treatment of some 50 additional topics. AS a matter of fact, however, Some of the principal actual additions are incorporated in the tables which occur throughout the pages of the bulletin. Many additional features of the life history of the pest that may throw light upon the question of combating it have been investigated. In some respects'very considerable additions to our knowledge of the insect have been made. This is especially the case in all matters relating to dissemination. This topic deals with matters that are naturally dith Cult to determine. The work must be done in the field, and a large territory must be covered. Through the cooperation with the Louisi ana Crop Pest Commission, which was engaged in an attempt to pre vent the further advance of the boll weevil into that State, a number of entomologists occupied several months' time in the extreme eastern and northern regions infested by the pest. It is, of course, only upon the basis of such a complete knowledge of all means by which the weevil leaches new regions that the possibility of checking its advance may be considered.
