Book Viewing Inscriptions in the Late Antique and Medieval World

Download or read book Viewing Inscriptions in the Late Antique and Medieval World written by Antony Eastmond and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inscriptions convey meaning not just by their contents but also by other means, such as choice of script, location, scale, spatial organisation, letterform, legibility and clarity. The essays in this book consider these visual qualities of inscriptions, ranging across the Mediterranean and the Near East from Spain to Iran and beyond, including Norman Sicily, Islamic North Africa, Byzantium, medieval Italy, Georgia and Armenia. While most essays focus on Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, they also look back at Achaemenid Iran and forward to Mughal India. Topics discussed include real and pseudo-writing, multilingual inscriptions, graffiti, writing disguised as images and images disguised as words. From public texts set up on mountainsides or on church and madrasa walls to intimate craftsmen's signatures, barely visible on the undersides of precious objects, the inscriptions discussed in this volume reveal their meanings as textual and visual devices.

Book excerpt: A history of pets and their companions in Britain from the Victorians to today. Pet Revolution tracks the British love affair with pets over the last two centuries. As pets have entered our homes and joined our families, they have radically changed our world. Historians Jane Hamlett and Julie-Marie Strange show how the pet economy exploded—increasing the availability of pet foods, medicines, and shops—and reshaped our modern lives in the process. A history of pets and their human companions, this book reimagines the “pet revolution” as one among many other revolutions—industrial, agricultural, and political—that made possible contemporary life.

Book King Jehoash and the Mystery of the Temple of Solomon Inscription

Download or read book King Jehoash and the Mystery of the Temple of Solomon Inscription written by Victor Sasson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A royal inscription, attributed to King Jenoash of Judah, surfaced on the Jerusalem antiquities market a few years ago. The Hebrew text, which recounts restorations to the Temple of Solomon, is similar to the biblical narrative. The inscribed black stone created worldwide news coverage and was branded a forgery by academicians most of whom are NOT professional Epigraphers ... Could the inscription be a forgery, and who could have faked such an artifact? Are those persons brought to trial guilty or innocent?"--Book back cover.

Book The Nile Mosaic of Palestrina

Download or read book The Nile Mosaic of Palestrina written by Paul G.P. Meyboom and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famous Nile Mosaic of Palestrina, ancient Praeneste in central Italy, dating to c. 100 B.C., is one of the earliest large mosaics which have been preserved from the classical world. It presents a unique, comprehensive picture of Egypt and Nubia. The interpretation of the mosaic is disputed, suggestions ranging from an exotic decoration to a topographical picture or a religious allegory. The present study demonstrates that the mosaic depicts rituals connected with Isis and Osiris and the yearly Nile flood. The presence of these Egyptian religious scenes at Praeneste can be explained by the assimilation of isis and Fortuna, the tutelary goddess of Praeneste, and by the interpretation of the mosaic as a symbol of divine providence.
