Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner Mission: A Handbook for Christian Workers When Wichern, on the afternoon Of September 22, 1848, delivered his famous address at the Wittenberg Kirchentag, he sounded a trumpet call that aroused all Protestant Germany. For almost two decades he had been favored with extraordinary Opportunities for Observing the spiritual, moral, and physical wretchedness Of large masses Of the people; he had made a careful study of the causes which led to their degradation; he had clearly discerned through whom and by what means and methods the required relief must be brought about; and now, filled with warmest love to his Lord and to suffern humanity, and with a glowing zeal for service, he called upon the entire Protestant Church of Germany to make the work of the Inner Mission, which so far had been only sporadic, a part of her own life and being, and thus to demonstrate her faith by her love. That hour marked the beginning Of the Inner Mission as a general and systematized movement. As the immediate result of the impulse given by Wichern, the Central Committee for the Inner Mission of the German Evangelical Church was or ganized at Berlin, January 4, 1849, to be followed since then by many similar associations, provincial and local, in all parts of Germany, in the Scandinavian countries, and now even in America. Book excerpt: This is a biographical study which surveys the life and career of Boston Baptist Adoniram Judson Gordon (1836-1895) and examines pre-millennialism as his motivation and source of his theological understanding. The study examines a moderate Calvinistic Baptist, tracing his theological development and analyzing his embrace of pre-millennialism and its substantial impact on his pastorate, denominational work, relationships, and enterprises. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inner Mission Leaflets: To Promote Christian Union in Social Service HE inner mission of the Church, in contrast to its outer or Foreign Mission, is its Mission within the land in which it is planted. Its object is that the country which the Church thus occupies shall become a truly Christian country in which the institutions and usages of Society, and the laws and life of the people, harmonize with the righteous will of God. The two series of leaflets in this volume are called Inner Mission Leaflets because they seek to promote this Inner Mission of the Church, either by setting forth the principles of that mission, or by showing in definite ways how that mission may be fulfilled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary theologies of mission rely on the central concept of the missio Dei, which states that mission properly belongs to the triune God over the church. However, present accounts fail to establish any corresponding link between God’s trinitarian economy and ontology. In other words, the problem of the missio Dei is the problem of the break between the act and being of God. Benjamin H. Kim argues that a repair is needed for missio Dei theology, and this repair is found in reexamining Barth’s doctrine of revelation. In doing so, the locus of mission moves from God’s trinitarian sending to his trinitarian revealing. The repair is further advanced by Dietrich Bonhoeffer through his concept of person, which functions as the unity of act and being. This account returns mission to its original definition, which was intended to describe the inner-trinitarian being of God in relation to humanity. The concept of person recovers this meaning of mission by locating it first in the person of Christ and second, in the collective person of the church existing as the Christ community. Thus, Bonhoeffer’s description of revelation in terms of personhood provides and account that is more faithful to the missio Dei’s core insights.

Book excerpt: The first history of the deaconess movement in the United States In the late nineteenth century, a new movement arose within American Protestant Christianity. Unsalaried groups of women began living together, wearing plain dress, and performing nursing, teaching, and other works of welfare. Modeled after the lifestyles of Catholic nuns, these women became America’s first deaconesses. Sanctified Sisters, the first history of the deaconess movement in the United States, traces its origins in the late nineteenth century through to its present manifestations. Drawing on archival research, demographic surveys, and material culture evidence, Jenny Wiley Legath offers new insights into who the deaconesses were, how they lived, and what their legacy has been for women in Protestant Christianity. The book argues that the deaconess movement enabled Protestant women—particularly single women—to gain power in a male-dominated Protestant world. They created hundreds of new institutions within Protestantism and created new roles for women within the church. While some who study women’s ordination draw a line from the deaconesses’ work to the struggle for women’s ordination in various branches of Protestant Christianity, Legath argues that most deaconesses were not interested in ordination. Yet, while they didn’t mean to, they did end up providing a foundation for today’s ordination debates. Their very existence worked to open the possibility of ecclesiastically authorized women’s agency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the issue of the day on Twitter, Facebook, or cable news is our sexuality, political divides, or the perceived conflict between faith and science, today’s media pushes each one of us into a frustrating clash between two opposing sides. Polarizing, us-against-them discussions divide us and distract us from thinking clearly and communicating lovingly with others. Scott Sauls, like many of us, is weary of the bickering and is seeking a way of truth and beauty through the conflicts. Jesus Outside the Lines presents Jesus as this way. Scott shows us how the words and actions of Jesus reveal a response that does not perpetuate the destructive fray. Jesus offers us a way forward—away from harshness, caricatures, and stereotypes. In Jesus Outside the Lines, you will experience a fresh perspective of Jesus, who will not (and should not) fit into the sides.
