Book excerpt: Since his death in 1962, Georges Bataille has acquired the status of one of the most influential thinkers of the age. The fact that this reputation has been established by the likes of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva and Philippe Sollers appears to confirm Bataille as a precursor of the postmodernist condition. Few contemporary accounts of Bataille's thought have however engaged with those aspects of his thinking which are influenced by his interest in mysticism. This is an omission which is all the more striking given that Bataille considered his thought to be not only opposite to all philosophical traditions originating in the Enlightenment but also a form of speculation intricately related to the religious exigencies of the Christian Medieval period. This book presents the first major study in English of how Bataille's 'mystical' practices and texts interact with the outer worlds of politics, social relations and externalised discourse which Bataille sets up as the antipodes of his 'inner experience.' From this starting point, Andrew Hussey argues that the inner experience of limits in Bataille's work, the movement which he terms 'transgression', is, unlike the textual drams cherished by his postmodernist admirers, a non-metaphorical, even visceral event.

The results of this clinical experiment reveal that the entire Industrial Jurisprudence evolved thus far is based on the concepts of Social Justice, Industrial Peace and Job Security. But in practice, Social Justice has promoted inequality, Industrial Peace has failed to accelerate productive activities of the country for the benefit of the community, and Job Security has promoted indiscipline and inefficiency. There is a powerful appeal to the judiciary as a class, the Bar as a profession, the Government as an instrument, and the political echelons as power-wielders to re-examine the total approach and link up industrial jurisprudence with the objectives of planned development. It is contended in the book that wherever a judgment or award is pronounced on the grounds of Social Justice, judges and adjudicators have a duty to show that the interests of the community were borne in mind. They must remember that industrial peace is treated as relevant because it leads to more production and thereby has a healthy impact on the national economy. Job Security is treated as relevant because it would promote efficiency and discipline. In their zest to fight for their respective claims, employers and employees may choose to ignore the demand of national economy, but the judiciary cannot. At the first blush the book may appear to take sides between employers and employees, but once the concepts of Social Justice, Industrial Peace and Job Security are understood with reference to what actually happened during the last 65 years, it is bound to receive wide support and acceptance in all circles. In this edition two chapters have been added viz. Misconducts, Punishments Other Miscellaneous issues – shift from judicial activism to restraint and Judicial Discipline.

Michael abandoned his career as a composer and went to India, the home of his maternal grandmother, where he lived for seven years fully focused on his spiritual awakening. Michael’s spiritual teachings reveal techniques of yoga and meditation that can open the door to one’s higher nature and to directly experience the after-death state. Nada yoga (meditation on the inner sound) is one of the core techniques for this realization. There is a vast luminous consciousness already within us, but it is obscured by the clouds of our incessant thoughts. With sincerity, moral integrity, and inner vigilance, which, when embodied, implies that we have internalized the basic tenets of the law of attention, we can move beyond the promptings of our lower nature and break through the clouds of our ordinary mind to realize our own divine nature. Emphasizing inner attention and an awareness of attitude, Michael’s practices can help aspirants make direct contact with the divine source each of us unknowingly carries deep within.

The works in this volume present Dilthey's most deeply held views about philosophy and how it can guide human practices. System of Ethics (1890) argues that Humean sympathy motivates us only externally and must be replaced with the internally motivated fellow-feeling of solidarity that respects others as ends in themselves. The Essence of Philosophy (1907) demonstrates how philosophy has developed from its traditional metaphysical role to the epistemological and encyclopedic functions that ground and order the natural and human sciences. The work also discloses an orientational function of philosophy that is explored further in "The Types of World-View and Their Development" (1911). Philosophical world-views are important in that they address the existential needs and riddles that grow out of life experience and are not solved by any of the sciences. "Dream" (1903) is about the thinkers portrayed in Raphael's School of Athens and Dilthey's worries about them breaking up into three divergent groups.
