THE INTERCESSOR "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are."-- Jas. V. 16, 17. There is nothing that so much weakens the force of the call to imitate the example of Scripture saints, as the thought that theirs are exceptional cases, and that what we see in them is not to be expected of all. The aim of God in Scripture is the very opposite. He gives us these men for our instruction and encouragement, as a specimen of what His grace can do, as living embodiments of what His will and our nature at once demand and render possible, It was just to meet the so common error alluded to, and to give confidence to all of us who aim at a life of effectual prayer, that James wrote: "Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are." As there was no difference between his nature and ours, or between the grace that wrought in him and works in us, there is no reason why we should not, like him, pray effectually. If our Prayer is to have power, we must seek to have somewhat of Elijah's spirit. The aspiration, Let me seek grace to pray like Elijah, is perfectly legitimate, is most needful. If we honestly seek for the secret of his power in prayer the path in which he trod will open to us. We shall find it in his life with God, his work for God, his trust in God. Elijah lived with God. Prayer is the voice of our life. As a man lives so he prays. Not the words or thoughts with which he is occupied at set times of prayer, but the bent of his heart as seen in his desires and actions, is regarded by God as his real prayer. The life speaks louder and truer than the lips. To pray well I must live well. He who seeks to live with God, will learn so to know His mind and to please Him, that he...

Download or read book The Inner Chamber and the Inner Life Classic Reprint written by Andrew Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner Chamber and the Inner Life How the Church of Christ, and the spiritual life of thousands of its members, suffers from the root disease; the neglect of secret intercourse with God. It is the lack of secret prayer, the neglect of the maintenance of that hidden life rooted in Christ, rooted and grounded in love, that explains the feebleness of the Christian life to resist the world, and its failure to bring forth fruit abundantly. Nothing can change this but the restoration, in the life of the believer, of the inner chamber to the place which Christ meant it to have. As Christians learn, instead of trusting their own efforts, what it is daily to strike their roots deeper into Christ, and to make the secret personal fellowship with God their chief care, true godliness will flourish. If the root be holy, so are the branches. If the morning hour be holy to the Lord, the day with its duties will be so too. If the root be healthy, so are the branches. Download or read book The Inner Chamber and the Inner Life written by Andrew Murray and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-23 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Murray's classic guide to nurturing the inner spirit relates many inspiring spiritual stories, such as the life of the Prophet Moses and God's thoughts as dispensed by the Lord Jesus Christ. An all-embracing tour of Biblical profundity, The Inner Chamber and the Inner Life looks at a variety of Bible stories and incidents to show the reader how to be mindful of the essential teachings of God. The titular 'inner chambers' refer to the atmosphere in which the truest prayer takes place; it is by admitting ourselves to these regularly that we attain authentic 'inner life'. In writing this book, Murray aims to prepare and motivate the reader for this closer connection to the divine. Yet this book is not simply a devotional with an emphasis on prayer; it is a manual which discusses improving one's relationship with God. Keeping oneself mindful of the sacrifice and efforts of Jesus, and carrying out the virtues preached by the Son of God is paramount to gaining a closer bond with the force of the Lord.

Book Teachers of the Inner Chambers

Download or read book Teachers of the Inner Chambers written by Dorothy Ko and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pathbreaking work argues that literate gentry women in 17th-century Jiangnan, far from being oppressed or silenced, created a rich culture and meaningful existence within the constraints of the Confucian system. Momentous socioeconomic and intellectual changes in 17th-century Jiangnan provided the stimulus for the flowering of women's culture. The most salient of these changes included a flourishing of commercial publishing, the rise of a reading public, a new emphasis on emotions, the promotion of women's education, and, more generally, the emergence of new definitions of womanhood. The author reconstructs the social, emotional and intellectual worlds of 17th-century women, and in doing so provides a new way to conceptualize China's past, one offering a more realistic and complete understanding of the values of Chinese culture and the functioning of Chinese society.

Book Curating Lived Islam in the Muslim World

Download or read book Curating Lived Islam in the Muslim World written by Iftikhar H. Malik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the medieval period, this book collates and reviews first-hand scholarship on Muslims in the Middle East and South Asia, as noted down by eminent British travellers, sleuths and observers of lived Islam. The book foregrounds the pre-colonial and pre-Orientalist phase and locates the multi-disciplinarity of Britain’s relationship with Muslims over the last millennium to demonstrate a multi-layered interface. Fully sensitive to a gender balance, the book focuses on specially selected individuals and their transformative experiences while living and working among Muslims. Examining the writings of male and female authors including Adelard, Thomas Coryate, Mary Montagu and Fanny Parkes, the book analyses their understanding of Islam. Moreover, the author explores the works of a salient number of representative colonial British women to move away from the imperious wives stereotype and shed light on gender and Islam in Near East and South Asia by illustrating the status of women, tribal hierarchies, historic and architectural sites and regional politics. Going beyond familiar views about colonialism, travel writings and memsahibs without losing sight of the complex relations between Britain and Asian Muslims, this book will be of interest to academics working on British history, Imperial history, the study of religions, Shi’i Islam, Islamic studies, Gender and the Empire and South Asian Studies.
