Book Plastic Deformation and Fracture of Materials

Download or read book Plastic Deformation and Fracture of Materials written by Robert W. Cahn and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 1993 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials Science and Technology A Comprehensive Treatment Edited by R.W. Cahn, P. Haasen, E.J. Kramer The 18-volume series ‘Materials Science and Technology' is the first in-depth, topic-oriented reference work devoted to this growing interdisciplinary field. A compendium of current, state-of-the-art information, it covers the most important classes of materials: metals, ceramics, glasses, polymers, semiconductors, and composites, from the fundamentals of perfect semiconductors via the physics of defects to "artificial" and amorphous semiconductors. Edited by internationally renowned figures in materials science, this series is sure to establish itself as a seminal work. Volume 6: This volume focuses on the mechanisms of plastic deformation and fatigue affecting the properties and performance of a wide variety of materials. Topics included are: flow stress and work hardening • dislocation patterning • solid solution strengthening • particle strengthening • superplasticity • inelastic deformation • cyclic deformation • fracture mechanisms • friction and wear • high-temperature deformation and creep • deformation and textures of metals at large strains

Book Fracture of Metals Polymers and Glasses

Download or read book Fracture of Metals Polymers and Glasses written by L. Bonis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elucidation of the various mechanisms responsible for fracture in different materials was the general subject of the Fourth Annual Symposium on Fundamental Phenomena in the Materials Sciences held January 31 and February 1, 1966, in Boston and sponsored by the Ilikon Corporation of Natick, Massachusetts. In an analysis of the brittle-to-ductile transition in polycrystalline metals, T. L. Johnston (Ford Motor Company) placed major emphasis on factors related to the plastic resistance associated with grain boundaries and the effects of plastic anisotropy. Utilizing a generalized form of the Griffith criterion, he said it can be readily shown that several individual factors may be made reasonably quantitative and that the nature of plastic response can be predicted. Specifically, it can be shown that a critical factor relates to the length of a plastic shear zone which is constrained by an elastically loaded matrix. As this length increases, the Griffith inequality is satisfied and brittle failure occurs; however, the use of decreased grain sizes or the refine ment of dislocation or twin distribution can further tend to "homoge nize" the plastic flow and to decrease the magnitude of the shear zone. Of considerable importance in the consideration of plastic resistance is the availability of favorably oriented slip systems in aa un sheared crystallite.

Book The Physics of Deformation and Fracture of Polymers

Download or read book The Physics of Deformation and Fracture of Polymers written by A. S. Argon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonstrating through examples, this book presents a mechanism-based perspective on the broad range of deformation and fracture response of solid polymers. It draws on the results of probing experiments and considers the similar mechanical responses of amorphous metals and inorganic compounds to develop advanced methodology for generating more precise forms of modelling. This, in turn, provides a better fundamental understanding of deformation and fracture phenomena in solid polymers. Such mechanism-based constitutive response forms have far-reaching application potential in the prediction of structural responses and in tailoring special microstructures for tough behaviour. Moreover, they can guide the development of computational codes for deformation processing of polymers at any level. Applications are wide-ranging, from large strain industrial deformation texturing to production of precision micro-fluidic devices, making this book of interest to both advanced graduate students and to practising professionals.
