Book A Determination of Diffusion Coefficients for Gaseous Systems at Various Temperatures

Download or read book A Determination of Diffusion Coefficients for Gaseous Systems at Various Temperatures written by Roger A. Strehlow and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport property which is most fundamentally related to forces between unlike molecules is the ordinary diffusion due to concentration gradients. Unfortunately, this property and its dependence upon temperature have not been systematically studied experimentally, with the result that the literature does not contain the data necessary to obtain good force constants for the introduction of unlike molecuels. The present work describes an experimental method for determining diffusion coefficients, based on the variation of thermal conductivity with composition in binary mixtures which is capable of being used over a wide range of temperature. Experimental results for the systems n-butane-hydrogen, sulfur hexafluoride-hydrogen, argon-hydrogen, and argon-helium are given for a temperature range from 10°C. to 140°C.

Book The Effect of Concentration on Diffusion Coefficients in Binary Systems

Download or read book The Effect of Concentration on Diffusion Coefficients in Binary Systems written by Kumbla Narasimha Srinivas Prabhu and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffusion coefficients were determined for the chloroform-air system at 50°C and for the methanol-air system at 55°C by the Arnold cell technique. The effect of concentration was studied by varying the concentration of the gas stream passing across the top of the Arnold cell. The chloroform-air system exhibited a strong dependency on concentration; for this system the diffusion coefficient changed by approximately ten percent as the chloroform concentration in the gas stream was changed from zero to 56 percent. The variation of the diffusion coefficient in the methanol-air system was small; a total variation of one percent was observed over the concentration range of zero to 46 percent methanol. Since the variation of diffusion coefficient for methanol-air system was of the order of one percent, assumption of constancy of diffusion coefficient with concentration would cause little error in design calculations; hence, no correlation was attempted for the methanol-air system. However attempts were made to correlate the concentration dependency of diffusion coefficients in the chloro form-air system. It was found that a quadratic functional relationship in concentration for the diffusion coefficients was the best possible correlation. A quadratic function in weight fraction was used to account for the effect of molecular weight differences. It was concluded that the difference in molecular weight of the two diffusing species has a pronounced effect on the variation of diffusion coefficients with concentration.

Book Gaseous Diffusion Coefficients

Download or read book Gaseous Diffusion Coefficients written by T. R. Marrero and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffusion coefficients of binary mixtures of dilute gases and comprehensively compiled, critically evaluated, and correlated by new semi-empirical expressions. There are seventy-four systems for which the data are sufficiently extensive, consistent and accurate to allow diffusion coefficients to be recommended with confidence. Deviation plots are given for most of these systems. Almost every gaseous diffusion coefficient which was experimentally determined and reported prior to 1970 can be obtained from the annotated bibliography and table of gas pairs. A detailed analysis of experimental methods is given, and intercomparison of their results helps establish reliability limits for the data, which depend strongly on temperature. Direct measurements are supplemented by calculations based on knowledge of intermolecular forces derived from independent sources-molecular beam scattering for high temperatures, and London dispersion constants for low temperatures. In addition, diffusion coefficients for several mixtures are obtained from experimental data on mixture viscosities and thermal diffusion factors. Combination of all these results gives diffusion coefficients over a very extensive temperature range from very low temperatures to 10,000 K. All data are corrected for composition dependence and for quantum effects. New semi-empirical equations are derived for making such corrections easily. (Author).
