Book excerpt: Rice is life, for most people living in Asia. Rice has shaped the cultures, diets, and economies of thousands of millions of people. Growing, selling, and eating rice are integral to the culture of many countries. Products of the rice plant are used for a number of different purposes, such as fuel, thatching, industrial starch, and artwork. Rice is the staple food of more than half of the world's population - more than 3.5 billion people depend on rice for more than 20% of their daily calories. Asia accounts for 90% of global rice consumption, exceeding 100 kg per capita annually in many countries. Keeping in view the importance of rice, the United Nations declared 2004 as the International Year of Rice. Food security, which is the condition of having enough food to provide adequate nutrition for a healthy life, is a critical issue. Sustainable rice production is important for food self-sufficiency and food security in changing climates. Sustainable rice production practices are those which (1) increase rice productivity and its quality, (2) improve soil fertility and health, (3) increase water use efficiency and conservation, and (4) increase diversification of rice fields, growers' income, and climate resilience.

Book Green Corrosion Inhibitors

Download or read book Green Corrosion Inhibitors written by V. S. Sastri and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book to cover developments in corrosion inhibitors is long overdue. This has been addressed by Dr Sastri in a book which presents fundamental aspects of corrosion inhibition, historical developments and the industrial applications of inhibitors. The book deals with the electrochemical principles and chemical aspects of corrosion inhibition, such as stability of metal complexes, the Hammett equation, hard and soft acid and base principle, quantum chemical aspects and Hansch' s model and also with the various surface analysis techniques, e.g. XPS, Auger, SIMS and Raman spectroscopy, that are used in industry for corrosion inhibition. The applications of corrosion inhibition are wide ranging. Examples given in this book include: oil and gas wells, petrochemical plants, steel reinforced cement, water cooling systems, and many more. The final chapters discuss economic and environmental considerations which are now of prime importance. The book is written for researchers in academia and industry, practicing corrosion engineers and students of materials science, engineering and applied chemistry.

Book Inhibition of the Corrosion of Mild Steel by Some Antibiotics

Download or read book Inhibition of the Corrosion of Mild Steel by Some Antibiotics written by Nnabuk Okon Eddy and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhibitive and adsorption characteristics of ampiclox, ampicillin, cloxacillin, chloramphenicle and tetracycline on the corrosion of mild steel have been studied using weight loss, gasometric and thermometric methods. The results obtained reveal that various concentrations of ampiclox, ampicillin, cloxacillin, chloramphenicle and tetracycline inhibited the corrosion of mild steel in H2SO4 between the temperature range of 303 - 333K. Values of inhibition efficiencies of these inhibitors (at 303K) were relatively high and ranged from 88.78 to 94.63%, 78.15 to 89.96%, 90.40 to 93.98%, 8.75 to 34.33% and from 85.78 to 95.52% for ampiclox, ampicillin, cloxacillin, chloramphenicle and tetracycline respectively. Chloramphenicle did not inhibit mild steel corrosion at 303K. The inhibition efficiency of these inhibitors was found to decrease with temperature. Due to synergism, the inhibition efficiencies of these inhibitors were further enhanced. Correlation between inhibition efficiencies of the studied compounds and quantum chemical parameters were excellent. Excellent correlation was also observed between theoretical (obtain through QSAR) and experimental inhibition efficiencies.

Book Corrosion Prevention and Protection

Download or read book Corrosion Prevention and Protection written by Edward Ghali and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-01-30 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion Prevention and Protection: Practical Solutions presents a functional approach to the various forms of corrosion, such as uniform corrosion, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, galvanic corrosion, stress corrosion, hydrogen-induced damage, sulphide stress cracking, erosion-corrosion, and corrosion fatigue in various industrial environments. The book is split into two parts. The first, consisting of five chapters: Introduction and Principles (Fundamentals) of Corrosion Corrosion Testing, Detection, Monitoring and Failure Analysis Regulations, Specifications and Safety Materials: Metals, Alloys, Steels and Plastics Corrosion Economics and Corrosion Management The second part of the book consists of two chapters which present: a discussion of corrosion reactions, media, active and active-passive corrosion behaviour and the various forms of corrosion, a collection of case histories and practical solutions which span a wide range of industrial problems in a variety of frequently encountered environments, including statues & monuments, corrosion problems in metallurgical and mineral processing plants, boilers, heat exchangers and cooling towers, aluminum and copper alloys, galvanized steel structures as well as hydrogeological environmental corrosion This text is relevant to researchers and practitioners, engineers and chemists, working in corrosion in industry, government laboratories and academia. It is also suitable as a course text for engineering students as well as libraries related to chemical and chemical engineering institutes and research departments.

Book Tailored Thin Coatings for Corrosion Inhibition Using a Molecular Approach

Download or read book Tailored Thin Coatings for Corrosion Inhibition Using a Molecular Approach written by Simo Olavi Pehkonen and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tailored Thin Coatings for Corrosion Inhibition Using a Molecular Approach discusses the fundamentals and applications of various thin coatings for the inhibition of fouling and corrosion from a molecular perspective. It provides the reader with a fundamental understanding of why certain coatings perform better than others in a given environment. Surface analytical and electrochemical techniques in understanding the coating performance are emphasized throughout the book, providing readers with a useful reference on how to pursue a systematic corrosion inhibitor R&D program that involves the testing of coating performance using various, currently available, state-of-the-art laboratory techniques. Wherever relevant, environmental considerations of the discussed coatings’ technologies are highlighted and discussed, with current and upcoming regulatory trends put forth by different governmental organizations. Provides atomic and molecular level understanding of tailored thin coatings for corrosion inhibition Discusses key steps in corrosion, including the attachment of harmful substances to surfaces, the fouling of surfaces, and the initiation and propagation of corrosion on surfaces Written by leading experts in the field

This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many ways to prevent corrosion and this book is one such research work about the eco- friendly, biodegradable, inexpensive, non- toxic product as inhibitor. Due to the abundant availability and cost effective nature of mild steel, it is being used in many industries. But due to aggressiveness of the acids, dissolution of metal occur and it undergoes rapid corrosion. This book brings you the choice of choosing an eco friendly, cost effective inhibitor that is easily available in natural compounds for corrosion inhibition of mild steel. An evaluation of both 1 M HCl and 0.5M H2SO4 extracts of Lycopersicon esculentum (Miller) as corrosion inhibitors has been made in the present work.
