Book The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth and Marvels Illustrated by Arthur Rackham

Download or read book The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth and Marvels Illustrated by Arthur Rackham written by Thomas Ingoldsby and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ingoldsby Legends are a true classic of Children’s literature. They were penned by Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), better known by his nom de plume; Thomas Ingoldsby. Barham was an English cleric of the Church of England, as well as a fanatic reader and writer. The stories were inspired by real legends, old mythology and ghost stories – mostly deliberately humorous parodies and pastiches of medieval folklore and poetry. This collection also includes several poems by the author, including ‘The Poplar’, ‘Marie Mignot’ and ‘The Truants.’ This edition of The Ingoldsby Legends is accompanied throughout by a series of dazzling colour and black and white illustrations – by a master of the craft; Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (which encompassed the years from 1850 until the start of the First World War), Rackham’s artistry is quite simply, unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique style, combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Barham’s captivating storytelling.

A more laconic note, in acknowledgment of a similar arrival, was penned by Mr. Barham himself, but whether it ever reached the hands of the eminent individual to whom it appears to have been addressed, is doubtful: --" Many thanks, my dear Lord, for the birds of your giving, Though I wish, with the dead, you had sent me the living." The living, however, arrived in due time, and fortunately happened to be one contiguous to that he had previously held. Of course the ready welcome h8 met with from his new congregation, and the rapid progress he made in interesting their warmer feelings, was, in a great measure, to be attributed to the fact of his not coming among them-as a stranger. The manner in which he acquitted himself at the delicate juncture brought about by the Bishop of London's well known charge of 18412, which served to place the clergy in so awkward a position, as regarded their Diocesan and the laity, contributed not a little to rivet their esteem. Of his own opinions he made no secret; but he had too strict a regard for constituted authority to offer anything like opposition to his spiritual superior, but at the same time was so deeply impressed with the present inapplicability of the proposed measures, that he applied for and obtained full permission to exercise his own judgment on the subject.
