Book The Information Content of Accounting Reports

Download or read book The Information Content of Accounting Reports written by Jonathan F. Ross and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to quantify the information content of financial statements? If possible, then how? This study examines accounting as a classical communication system with the purpose of providing a framework with which to approach these fundamentally important questions. Information theory was established in the early-mid 20th century to describe the properties of classical communication systems. Applying concepts from this theory to an accounting context provides insight into the questions asked above. Specifically, a measure of the information content of a message in general and the financial statements in particular is developed from information theory concepts which originated with Claude Shannon -- the father of modern information theory -- in the 1940's. The measure is able to extract information contained in the financial statement numbers to predict firm performance despite the fact the numbers themselves do not easily admit insight. Thus, there seems to be "hidden'' information in the numbers that the measure captures which, in hindsight, helps predict firm price movements. Specifically, as a validity check, I provide evidence that the measure alone explains 10% of the variation in returns for a cross-section of firms.

Book excerpt: The issue of stock market usefulness is, in fact, related to the specific disclosure environment prevailing in a country. Croatian capital market is underdeveloped and has limited significance in the financial system. This paper deals with the usefulness of financial statement information and it is organized in the following way: in the first part we give a brief overview of capital markets in transition economies, history and regulation of the stock market in Croatia, with particular focus on the Zagreb Stock Exchange. Then, we enumerate the data collection procedure and describe the methodology used to test our hypothesis. We examine the information content of annual earnings announcements through its impact on the stock price movement in the case of Pliva's ordinary shares, listed on the Quotation I of the Zagreb Stock Exchange. Finally, at the end of the paper we discuss the results and drew conclusions. Book The Information Content of Accounting Numbers Over Different Time Intervals Evidence from EU

Download or read book The Information Content of Accounting Numbers Over Different Time Intervals Evidence from EU written by Filip [Verfasser] Mladenovic and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis if to further investigate the information content of accounting numbers. The focus will be on measurement intervals of different length and on the last global financial crisis. The analysis is based on companies from European Union and considered period is 2003-2010. The research uses statistical methods in order to investigate which accounting measure has the highest value relevance in mentioned circumstances. The prior studies from different countries provided mixed evidence regarding the same issue which motivates to further research this topic. The empirical findings in this thesis show that cash flows from operating activities and net cash flows are relatively more informative in comparison to accrual based accounting earnings. This applies for all measurement intervals and the relative gap between these variables is increasing as the analyzed measurement interval is expanded. The findings also indicate that using decomposed cash flow variables is highly beneficial in comparison to aggregated ones, especially when analyzing longer time intervals. Regarding financial crisis, results show that explanatory power of accounting numbers is significantly lower during that period.*****The aim of this thesis if to further investigate the information content of accounting numbers.
