Book excerpt: Behaviorally inhibited children are predisposed toward social difficulties, but other environmental and within-child characteristics, such as emotion regulation, also influence social development. This study longitudinally examined: (1) independent influences of behavior inhibition and emotion regulation on future social competence, (2) associations between behavior inhibition and emotion regulation, and (3) the moderating role of emotion regulation on the relation between behavior inhibition and social competence. Participants (N = 257) were enrolled in a larger study of temperament and social development. Maternal-report questionnaires and behavioral observations (ages 2 and 3) were used to assess behavior inhibition. Children's active and passive regulation strategy usage (age 5) was observed during a laboratory-based sadness-eliciting situation. Lastly, children participated in a free play task with an unfamiliar peer in the laboratory (age 7). Types of initiations, peers' responses to initiations, and play sophistication during this task were coded to assess social competence. Latent variables for behavior inhibition, emotion regulation, and social competence were created. The structural model was analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results show that highly behaviorally inhibited children are predisposed to utilize less competent regulation strategies in a sadness-eliciting situation. Furthermore, competent sadness regulation was found to influence the relation between early behavior inhibition and future social competence with an unfamiliar peer. Overall study findings elucidate developmental trajectories of risk and resilience, which informs prevention practices, particularly for highly inhibited children who are at-risk for a range of social, emotional, and academic difficulties.

Book excerpt: Starting in infancy and across childhood, individuals develop the skills necessary to successfully navigate their emotion and behavior within the social world. The ability to regulate one's emotional responses has important implications for a majority of adaptive and maladaptive socioemotional outcomes. Further, temperamental predispositions that reflect greater emotionality may influence children's development of emotion regulation strategies. However, little work addresses these developmental pathways for children with temperamental exuberance, a profile characterized by greater positive approach towards novelty and greater sociability.This dissertation examines the influence of infant and toddler temperament, specifically exuberance, on the development of emotion regulation strategies in early childhood (Empirical Study 1), as well as the interactive and individual effects of early temperament and these emerging emotion regulation strategies on both adaptive (i.e., social competence) and maladaptive (i.e., externalizing behavior problems) socioemotional functioning in middle childhood (Empirical Study 2). Data for these studies come from the Temperament Over Time Study (TOTS), conducted by the Child Development Lab at the University of Maryland. The sample consists of 291 participants recruited at 4 months of age and invited to follow up assessments through 7 years of age. In study 1, structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses illustrated unique relations between temperamental exuberance and emotion regulation at 5 years of age, that were not explained by other measures of self-regulation (i.e., cognitive control). In study 2, SEM analyses indicated that neither exuberance nor emotion regulation predicted later social competence, but both were related to externalizing behavior problems at 7 years of age. In addition, exuberance, emotion regulation, and cognitive control were differentiated in their relations to aggressive/disruptive behavior problems compared to impulsive/inattentive behavior problems. Whereas cognitive control is related to fewer aggressive/disruptive behavior problems, exuberance and active emotion regulation are both related to increased impulsive/inattentive behavior problems. Implications regarding the developmental pathways from early exuberance and emerging emotion regulation and on later socioemotional functioning are addressed alongside a discussion of the specific link between early exuberance and impulsive/inattentive behavior problems.
