A microplot study was also conducted to determine the host suitability of purple deadnettle for soybean cyst nematode under field conditions and the influence of purple deadnettle removal strategies on the nematode population. For the winter annual removal timing study, fall removal of winter annual weeds resulted in an increased density and biomass of giant ragweed. Fall removal of winter annual weeds resulted in decreased giant ragweed control at 14, 28, and 56 days after planting. Fall and spring removal of winter annual weeds resulted in an increased density and biomass of common waterhemp. For the microplot study, purple deadnettle was found to be a poor host for soybean cyst nematode under field conditions. Removal of purple deadnettle did not have an effect on the nematode population density.

Little is known of how fall herbicide applications impact soil conditions, insect populations, and winter and summer annual weed populations. Few studies have directly compared fall herbicide applications to early spring applications. Therefore, field experiments were conducted in both no-till corn and soybean fields from 2004 through 2006 in central, northwest, and northeast Missouri. Herbicide applications were made in the fall and at three spring timings. Two residual and one non-residual herbicide treatment were applied at each of the four timings. Removal of winter annual weeds with the three herbicide treatments led to an increase in soil moisture just after planting, and a decrease in insect populations and feeding well after planting. Measurements of soil temperature indicated that removing winter annual weeds could increase temperatures in the spring. Fall residual herbicide treatments provided the highest level of winter annual weed control, yet provided poor control of summer annual weed species after planting. Residual herbicide applications made at the last spring timing provided the highest level of summer annual weed control, yet provided poor winter annual weed control at planting. Residual herbicide applications made one to two months prior to planting offered the best balance between winter and summer annual weed control. Based on the results of these experiments, no-till corn and soybean producers can obtain maximum weed control and planting conditions by applying a residual herbicide in the early spring rather than the.

Book excerpt: The agricultural practice of 'double-cropping,' harvesting two crops from the same piece of land in a single growing season, is a popular practice in Southern Illinois where growers often plant soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) soon after winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) harvest. Horseweed (Conyza canadensis L. Cronq.) competition and lack of control can cause detrimental effects on yield for double-crop producers in Illinois due to the development of multiple herbicide resistance in this weed species. To combat this problem of herbicide resistance, new herbicide-tolerant soybean technologies and new herbicide formulations have been developed, but these technologies will quickly lose efficacy unless stewarded properly. Therefore, our objective for this study was to evaluate the control of horseweed and other weeds and crop yield as influenced by weed-cutting height, herbicide treatments, timing of herbicide application in three studies (a greenhouse study and in-crop and non-crop field studies) with the goal of improving weed management in double-crop soybean. Data obtained from the non-crop study that focused on the evaluation of different cutting heights, herbicide treatments and application timings was observed to be significantly different by weed species evaluated: horseweed, common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.), and Canada goldenrod (Solidago canadensis L.). Horseweed control and biomass accumulation was observed to be strongly influenced by cutting height, where cutting to 15 cm resulted in the greatest control efficacy and reduction in overall biomass irrespective of herbicide treatment used. While application timing following cutting in relation to control efficacy and biomass accumulation was only observed to be significant based upon the translocation properties of the herbicide applied, i.e. contact or systemic. Differences in the perennial weed species Canada goldenrod were observed compared to horseweed; cutting in combination with herbicide treatments resulted in a decrease in control compared to herbicide applications made to noncut Canada goldenrod plants. Data obtained in this study suggest that cutting in combination with the use of effective burndown herbicides may lead to increased control of certain weed species and could be a component of herbicide technology stewardship in double-crop soybeans. The in-crop study focused on evaluating yield potential of burndown herbicides in double-crop soybean systems. Observations from this study revealed that similarly to full-season beans, yield in double-crop soybeans was limited dependent upon the burndown herbicide programs ability to achieve broad-spectrum weed control. When effective burndown herbicides dicamba, glufosinate, and paraquat were combined with herbicides that possessed the ability to provide soil residual activity, such as saflufenacil, chlorimuron, chloransulam, metribuzin, sulfentrazone or flumioxazin, yield potential was maximized compared to these active ingredients applied as standalone treatments. Data from this study further stresses the importance of utilizing multiple effective sites of actions to achieve higher yields while maintaining good herbicide stewardship practices.

Book excerpt: Plant-parasitic nematodes represent a substantial constraint on global food security by reducing the yield potential of all major crops, including soybean (Glycine max L.). The soybean cyst nematode (SCN) (Heterodera glycines I.) is widely distributed across all soybean production areas of the US, and is the major yield-limiting factor, especially in the Midwestern US. Double cropping (DC) is defined as producing more than one crop on the same parcel of land in a single growing season. Compared to conventional single annual crops, DC provides many advantages, including improving soil health, enhanced nutrient provisioning to plants, improvement of soil physical properties, control of erosion, decrease in tillage requirements, and enhanced profitability. In some double-cropping systems, soybean is planted following winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and several reports suggest the potential of wheat to suppress SCN populations. Field trials were conducted from 2017 to 2018 to investigate the effect of wheat on SCN populations in double-cropping soybean. Nine fields with three levels of initial SCN populations (low, moderate, and high) were selected in Illinois. Wheat was planted in strips alternating with strips-maintained weed-free and under fallow over winter and early spring. Soybean was planted in all strips after the wheat harvest. Soybean cyst nematode egg densities were acquired at four time points: wheat establishment, post-wheat/pre-soybean, mid-soybean (R1 growth stage or beginning of flowering), and post-soybean harvest. Wheat strips reduced SCN egg densities compared with fallow strips at the R1 stage (−31.8%) and after soybean harvest (−32.7%). Book excerpt: Thirty field trials were conducted over a two-year period (2017 and 2018) at five locations to evaluate the interactions of three rates of isoxaflutole + metribuzin, the efficacy of one-, two-, and three-way herbicide tank-mixtures, and one- and two-pass herbicide programs on ten annual broadleaf and grass weed species in isoxaflutole-resistant soybean. The co-application of isoxaflutole + metribuzin provided similar or greater control of all weed species compared to the herbicides applied alone. Isoxaflutole + metribuzin had additive or synergistic control of weed species evaluated. The addition of a soil applied grass herbicide to isoxaflutole + metribuzin did not improve weed control compared to isoxaflutole + metribuzin. Isoxaflutole + metribuzin followed by glyphosate provided 98-100% control of weed species evaluated. Weed control efficacy of herbicides applied preemergence was influenced by rainfall after application. Annual weeds can be effectively controlled in isoxaflutole-resistant soybean using multiple different weed management strategies.
