Book Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education in the Field

Download or read book Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education in the Field written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest is growing in sustainable agriculture, which involves the use of productive and profitable farming practices that take advantage of natural biological processes to conserve resources, reduce inputs, protect the environment, and enhance public health. Continuing research is helping to demonstrate the ways that many factorsâ€"economics, biology, policy, and traditionâ€"interact in sustainable agriculture systems. This book contains the proceedings of a workshop on the findings of a broad range of research projects funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The areas of study, such as integrated pest management, alternative cropping and tillage systems, and comparisons with more conventional approaches, are essential to developing and adopting profitable and sustainable farming systems.

Book Encyclopedia of Environmental Management Four Volume Set

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Environmental Management Four Volume Set written by Sven Erik Jorgensen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 3513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of an Outstanding Academic Title Award from CHOICE Magazine Encyclopedia of Environmental Management gives a comprehensive overview of environmental problems, their sources, their assessment, and their solutions. Through in-depth entries and a topical table of contents, readers will quickly find answers to questions about specific pollution and management issues. Edited by the esteemed Sven Erik Jørgensen and an advisory board of renowned specialists, this four-volume set shares insights from more than 500 contributors—all experts in their fields. The encyclopedia provides basic knowledge for an integrated and ecologically sound management system. Nearly 400 alphabetical entries cover everything from air, soil, and water pollution to agriculture, energy, global pollution, toxic substances, and general pollution problems. Using a topical table of contents, readers can also search for entries according to the type of problem and the methodology. This allows readers to see the overall picture at a glance and find answers to the core questions: What is the pollution problem, and what are its sources? What is the "big picture," or what background knowledge do we need? How can we diagnose the problem, both qualitatively and quantitatively, using monitoring and ecological models, indicators, and services? How can we solve the problem with environmental technology, ecotechnology, cleaner technology, and environmental legislation? How do we address the problem as part of an integrated management strategy? This accessible encyclopedia examines the entire spectrum of tools available for environmental management. An indispensable resource, it guides environmental managers to find the best possible solutions to the myriad pollution problems they face. Book Natural Enemy Ecology in Apple Orchards

Download or read book Natural Enemy Ecology in Apple Orchards written by Tara E. Sackett and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Integrated pest management (IPM) uses multiple approaches to keep pest levels below economic injury levels. Integrated pest management combines preventative methods such as biocontrol with curative methods; this synthesis requires an understanding of the ecology of natural enemies in the agroecosystem. Arthropod natural enemy communities in apple orchards are diverse, and spiders (Araneae) are particularly abundant and species rich. Orchard arthropods are affected by multiple factors, both external (e.g. immigration) and internal (e.g. pesticides) to the orchard environment. In this thesis I explored the influence of these factors on natural enemy communities in apple orchards. I investigated which natural habitats adjacent to orchards are potential sources of spiders, and the influence of distance from a source habitat on the composition of colonizing spider assemblages. I tested how kaolin clay, a pest management technique, affects orchard generalist predator communities and the parasitoids of a pest species and prey item of spiders, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). I also examined how applications of kaolin to apple foliage affect the behaviour of C. rosaceana larvae and whether this alters the predation on larvae by spiders. Comparisons of spider assemblages in natural habitats adjacent to apple orchards in southern Qu©♭bec indicated that deciduous forest had spider assemblages similar in to those in the orchard foliage. The composition of the spiders that colonized the apple orchards changed over a small spatial scale (10-50 m). The relative abundance of individuals among spider species in older orchards was more evenly distributed than in assemblages of recently colonized spiders, suggesting that local dynamics also shape the composition of the spider assemblages over time. Kaolin on apple leaves changed C. rosaceana larval behaviour: third and fourth instar larvae and neonates took longer to build leaf shelters, and ne" --

Book excerpt: This two-part volume with contributions from more than 50 international specialists, provides an up-to-date text and brings together facts and views of acarologists specialized in various aspects of the biology of spider mites. The need for such a treatment of scientific progress and recommended topics for future research exists among students, commencing in the study of acarology and plant protection, as well as among those engaged in acarological research and teaching. Both books will serve to provide a synthesis of much of the knowledge on basic and applied aspects of the biology of spider mites and their natural enemies; stimulate students to analyse critically the views propounded by the authors of the book, and instigate research into environmentally safe and cost effective means of pest control.
