Book The Influence of Subdivision Design and Conservation of Open Space on Carbon Storage and Annual Sequestration

Download or read book The Influence of Subdivision Design and Conservation of Open Space on Carbon Storage and Annual Sequestration written by Richard M. Vaughn and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities are increasingly trying to offset carbon dioxide emissions and residential subdivisions are a major source of such emissions. Compact or clustered subdivision designs have the potential to improve carbon storage and sequestration through the conservation of open space and the conservation of existing trees found on built lots. However, very few empirical studies estimate how different subdivision designs and tree conservation strategies affect the carbon footprint of residential developments. Using a 1,743 acre (705 ha) pine plantation site that has been approved for the development of 1,835 units near Gainesville, Florida, my objectives were to determine which site designs and tree conservation strategies could maximize carbon sequestration and storage. From 80 stratified random plots, I measured and analyzed tree and plot characteristics according to three aggregated forest type and tree stand age categories. Tree data collected from these plots were entered into the i-Tree ECO model to estimate baseline predevelopment carbon storage and sequestration. ArcMap was then used to compare the impact, on baseline carbon sequestration and storage capacity, of several different site designs and tree conservation strategies for the proposed development. Up to 91 percent of carbon storage and up to 82 percent of carbon sequestration could be maintained through a cluster development design and where older tree stands were targeted for conservation. Results indicate that a subdivision's carbon footprint can significantly improve when forest type analyses are incorporated into the design of a development.

Book Conservation Subdivision Design in Practice

Download or read book Conservation Subdivision Design in Practice written by Eric Ryer and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of new home construction in suburban areas is in the form of what is known as conventional development whereby all or nearly all lawfully developable land is converted to streets and houselots of basically equal size and dimensions; this urban sprawl is necessitating creative land use techniques to slow the consumption of open lands. This research describes how conservation subdivision design is an attempt to alter this pattern by means of clustering homes close together on smaller lots in order to preserve open space. It describes the conservation design process and establishes a framework and methodology utilizing Geographic Information Systems that allows individuals to evaluate the results of conservation design developments (open space preservation). The study applies the framework and methodology to six conservation design developments west of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, demonstrating how to measure the success of conservation development designs, and should be especially useful to land use planning college courses, municipal planning commissions, and residential developers.

Book Carbon Sequestration in Urban Ecosystems

Download or read book Carbon Sequestration in Urban Ecosystems written by Rattan Lal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-09 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urbanization drastically alters the ecosystems structure and functions, disrupts cycling of C and other elements along with water. It alters the energy balance and influences climate at local, regional and global scales. In 2008, urban population exceeded the rural population. In 2050, 70% of the world population will live in urban centers. The number of megacities (10 million inhabitants) increased from three in 1975 to 19 in 2007, and is projected to be 27 in 2025. Rapid urbanization is altering the ecosystem C budget. Yet, urban ecosystems have a large C sink capacity in soils and biota. Judicious planning and effective management can enhance C pool in urban ecosystems, and off-set some of the anthropogenic emissions. Principal components with regards to C sequestration include home lawns and turfs, urban forests, green roofs, park and recreational/sports facilities and urban agriculture.

Book excerpt: As urban populations expand and household sizes shrink, residential development places disproportionately greater pressure on important ecosystems along the urban/rural interface. There has been renewed interest in conservation subdivisions as a way to protect natural systems and cultural areas while maintaining comparable housing densities. While conservation subdivisions are designed to minimize the impacts of development on the environment, there is also a need to examine social and economic impacts of conservation design on residents. This study explores the sociological and economic effects of development on residents of three conservation subdivisions and three traditional subdivisions in Cedar Rapids, Iowa using a survey to assess sense of community, quality of life, organizational participation, consumer perceptions and willingness to pay. A market analysis comparing sales, assessments, and transactional data was also completed. Residents living in conservation subdivisions report a greater sense of community and express greater satisfaction with their quality of life than residents of traditional subdivisions. Communal ownership of conservation features also seems to be an important factor affecting resident participation in neighborhood associations. Whereas most survey respondents expressed some willingness to pay for additional open space features in their neighborhood, survey respondents from conservation subdivisions indicated a greater willingness to pay for additional conservation features despite having an already abundant supply. There were no differences in assessed value, number of sales, or length of residency. However, houses in conservation subdivisions appreciated at a greater rate than similar houses in traditional subdivisions during the 5-year period examined. Our findings indicate that there are social and economic benefits of conservation subdivisions to both residents and developers. Both developers and city officials should consider these results when dealing with residential growth issues. Conservation subdivision design can help address both environmental and social concerns related to housing growth, and its use can be profitable to both developers and consumers.

Book excerpt: Growing Greener is an illustrated workbook that presents a new look at designing subdivisions while preserving green space and creating open space networks. Randall Arendt explains how to design residential developments that maximize land conservation without reducing overall building density, thus avoiding the political and legal problems often associated with "down-zoning." The author offers a three-pronged strategy for shaping growth around a community's special natural and cultural features, demonstrating ways of establishing or modifying the municipal comprehensive plan, zoning ordinance, and subdivision ordinance to include a strong conservation focus. Open space protection becomes the central organizing principle for new residential development, and the open space that is protected is laid out to form an interconnected system of protected lands running across a community. The book offers: detailed information on how to conduct a community resource inventory a four-step approach to designing conservation subdivisions extensive model language for comprehensive plans, subdivision ordinances, and zoning ordinances illustrated design principles for hamlets, villages, and traditional small town neighborhoods In addition, Growing Greener includes eleven case studies of actual conservation developments in nine states, and two exercises suitable for group participation. Case studies include: Ringfield, Chadds Ford Township, Pennsylvania; The Fields of St. Croix, City of Lake Elmo, Minnesota; Prairie Crossing, Grayslake, Illinois; The Meadows at Dolly Gordon Brook, York, Maine; Farmcolony, Standsville, Virginia; The Ranch at Roaring Fork, Carbondale, Colorado; and others. Growing Greener builds upon and expands the basic ideas presented in Arendt's earlier work Conservation Design for Subdivisions, broadening the scope to include more detailed sections on the comprehensive planning process and information on how zoning ordinances can be updated to incorporate the concept of conservation design. It is the first practical publication to explain in detail how resource-conserving development techniques can be put into practice by municipal officials, residential developers, and site designers, and it offers a simple and straightforward approach to balancing opportunities for developers and conservationists.

Book The Trade off Between Private Lots and Public Open Space in Subdivisions at the Urban Rural Fringe

Download or read book The Trade off Between Private Lots and Public Open Space in Subdivisions at the Urban Rural Fringe written by Elizabeth Kopits and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many communities on the urban-rural fringe, subdivisions are subject to clustering rules, in which houses must be located on a portion of the total land area and the remainder of the land is left as open space. This open space may be undisturbed forest or pastureland, or it may include recreation facilities and trails. In some communities, the open space may remain in agricultural use as pasture or cropland. Although the open space may provide benefits to subdivision residents, it means that those residents are living in a higher-density setting than people living in conventional subdivisions. It is unclear whether the benefits offset the loss experienced by smaller lots and higher density. This trade-off is the focus of our study. We use data on subdivision house sales occurring between 1981 and 2001 in a county on the fringe of the Washington, DC, metropolitan area to estimate a hedonic price model. We examine how households value being adjacent to open space and having more open space in the subdivision, and how they may be willing to trade off those amenities with their own private lot space. We find that private acreage matters to households - a 10 percent larger lot leads to about a 0.6 percent higher house price, all else being equal. Subdivision open space is also valuable to households, but the marginal effect is much smaller than the marginal effect of private lot space. We also find that subdivision open space does substitute for private land, but the extent of the trade-off is small. We use the results of the estimated hedonic model to simulate the effects on prices of jointly increasing open space and reducing average lot size, holding the size of the subdivision constant. We find that average house prices are lower with clustering, particularly for interior lots that are not adjacent to open space.

Book Advances in Carbon Capture and Utilization

Download or read book Advances in Carbon Capture and Utilization written by Deepak Pant and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the recent trends in carbon management and up-to-date information on different carbon management strategies that lead to manage increasing concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The growing evidence of climate change resulting from the continued increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration has made it a high profile political–social and trade issue. The mean global average earth temperature rose by 0.6± 2°C during the second half of the century with the rate of 0.17°C/decade. As per GISS data in the year of 2017, it rose 0.9°C (1.62 °F) above the 1951-1980 mean global temperature. Recently World Meteorological Organization analyzes the past record temperature and found the past 10 years were the warmest years about 1.1°C above preindustrial level. Over the past decade, carbon management by various techniques has to come to fore as a way to manage carbon dioxide emissions contributing to climate change. The proposed book addresses the need for an understanding of sustainable carbon dioxide management technologies mainly focused on (a) minimizing carbon dioxide emission from sources; (b) maximizing environmentally sound recuse, reduce and recycling; (c)emerging technology toward carbon dioxide mitigation and d) converting carbon dioxide into valuable products form sustainable use. Other books related to carbon management attempt to cover the carbon capture and sequestration, carbon mineralization, utilization and storage but the topic of CO2 management strategies is not discussed in detail for sustainable development. Furthermore, this book also covers all physical, chemical and biological process for long-term capture, removal and sequestration of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for sustainable management which is not described in other carbon management books. In order to meet CO2 emissions reduction target, a range of technological approaches, including development of clean fuels and clean coal technologies, adopting cleaner and more energy efficiency and conservation, developing renewable energy and implementing CCS technologies, will also be considered for sustainable future.

Book excerpt: This report is the second in a series that examines the role of natural forests and woodlands in the storage of carbon. Understanding the role of natural ecosystems in carbon storage is an important part of solving the climate change problem. This report presents a landscape-wide green carbon account of the 'Great Western Woodlands' (GWW), sixteen million hectares of mostly contiguous natural woody vegetation to the east of the wheatbelt in south-western Western Australia. For the first time, we provide an overview of the vegetation structure, climate, geology and historical land use of the GWW, and examine how these interact to affect the carbon dynamics of this region's landscape ecosystems. An analysis of time-series of satellite imagery is used to develop a fire history of the GWW since the 1970s. These layers of environmental information, along with field survey data and remotely sensed greenness, are used to construct a spatial model to estimate biomass carbon stocks of the woodlands at the present day, and to infer an upper limit to the carbon sequestration potential of the GWW. A range of management options to enable protection of high quality carbon stocks and restoration of degraded stocks are evaluated.
