Download or read book A Survey of Upward Bound Programs on the Achievement of Rural High School Students written by Dewayne Middleton and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of African American students on the impact of an Upward Bound Program on their academic performance, self-esteem, and the attitudes toward post-secondary educational success. Specifically, this study was concerned with the following variables: gender, family structure, and age as they related to the students aforementioned perceptions. A survey design was employed in this investigation to collect and analyze the data. Three hundred fifty-three (353) African American high school students participated in this empirical study. An instrument entitled "The Middleton Upward Bound Survey" was used to gather the data. The investigative instrument was validated by a group of Upward Bound professionals and university research professors. The instrument had an alpha coefficient of .84 for the test as a whole. Moreover, the data was tested through the application of the One-Way Analysis of Variance and the Scheffe' Multiple Comparison Test. Among the conclusions of this study were the following; in general it appeared the younger African American high school students are more favorable to his/her perceptions regarding the impact of an Upward Bound Programs on student academic achievement. African American high school students who reside with a guardian also tend to have more favorable perceptions regarding the impact of an Upward Bound Programs on their academic achievement. Regardless, of African American high school students' age, gender or family structure, they tend to have similar perceptions regarding the impact of an Upward Bound Programs on their attitudes toward post-secondary educational success.

Book The Effect of AVID and Upward Bound on Latino Cultural Identity Perceptions

Download or read book The Effect of AVID and Upward Bound on Latino Cultural Identity Perceptions written by Megan K. Trifiro and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to describe how cultural identity perceptions of Latino high school seniors are influenced by participating in AVID or Upward Bound programs, specifically focusing on how identity perceptions are effected by each program's goals and future expectations for student achievement beyond high school. And each programs treatment of cultural heritage and community during implementation. Two data sets were surveyed, one for AVID and One group for Upward Bound. Data was collected using written surveys that asked students to comment on several dimensions of personal self perception and experiences in their respective program, either AVID or Upward Bound. Results were analyzed using four main themes: Life Goals, Perceptions of Self and Identity, Being Bilingual in School, Perceptions of Cultural Heritage. Student responses indicate that these programs are including issues of cultural identity in the curriculum by supporting native language, incorporating the cultural communities with parent involvement, and celebrating cultural heritage to some degree. Responses also indicate that program participation does effect perceptions of self as a student, life goals, and student views of their cultural community.

Book Student Perceptions in the Classroom

Download or read book Student Perceptions in the Classroom written by Dale H. Schunk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1992 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book's two primary objectives are to present theory and research on the role of learners' achievement-related perceptions in educational contexts and to discuss the implications of this research for educational practices. Although contributors share the view that students' perceptions exert important effects in achievement settings, they differ in diverse ways including their theoretical orientation, their choice of research methodology, the perceptions they believe are of primary importance, and the antecedents and consequences of these perceptions. They discuss the current status of their ideas and provide a forward look at research and practice.

Book The Effect of Student Perceptions of Belonging and Academic Press on Academic Performance

Download or read book The Effect of Student Perceptions of Belonging and Academic Press on Academic Performance written by Maria A. Bonich and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined relationships among student perceptions of academic press, belonging, and academic performance (n = 248). A modified 18-item Psychological Sense of School Membership (PSSM) survey assessed students' perceived classroom level belonging and a 7-item subscale measuring academic press extracted from the Patterns of Adaptive Learning Survey (PALS) combined to form one self-report survey. Responses captured fourth grade student perceptions of their levels of belonging and academic press by school, classroom, gender, and race/ethnicity in 11 classrooms from two suburban school districts. Survey data were matched to state-mandated English Language Arts (ELA) and Math test data scores to measure academic performance.

Book Factors Associated with Peer Influence Aimed at Increasing College Student Academic Success Retention and Graduation

Download or read book Factors Associated with Peer Influence Aimed at Increasing College Student Academic Success Retention and Graduation written by Michael Griffel and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated a theoretical basis for the creation and implementation of programs and practices aimed at improving college student retention and graduation rates at public 4-year colleges and universities. This study sought to link three models into a new model. The three models were: (a) social norms theory (a peer influence model), (b) academic behaviors that contributed to grades, grade point average (GPA), and (c) that academic achievement, grades, contributed significantly to college student retention and graduation. The focus was an investigation regarding the connection between college student peer influence and academic achievement (grades). A survey that assessed students' perceptions of others' engagement in selected academic success behaviors was developed, tested, and administered for three years at three public four-year universities in the northwestern United States, with a sample of 3,274. Factor analysis, reliability scales, linear regression and structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses were conducted. Analyses yielded seven students' perceptions of others' academic success behaviors factor-scales and one students' own academic success behaviors combined scale. Regression and SEM analyses showed: (1) a direct positive relationship between students' perceptions of others engagement in the selected academic success behaviors and students' own engagement in the behaviors, (2) a direct positive relationship between students' engagement in the selected academic success behaviors and students' grades, (3) an indirect positive relationship between students' perceptions of others and grades, (the path of the relationship traveled through students own behaviors) and (4) a direct negative relationship between students' perceptions of others and students' grades. Recommended programs and practices utilizing positive peer academic influence approaches were included.

Book Handbook of Research in Educational Communications and Technology

Download or read book Handbook of Research in Educational Communications and Technology written by M. J. Bishop and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 5th edition of the prestigious AECT Handbook continues previous efforts to reach outside the traditional instructional design and technology community to the learning sciences and computer information systems communities toward developing a conceptualization of the field. However, given the pervasive and increasingly complex role technology now plays in education since the 1st edition of the Handbook in 1996, the editors have reorganized the research chapters in this edition to focus on the learning problems we are trying to solve with educational technologies, rather than to focus on the things we are using to solve those problems. Additionally, for the first time this edition of the Handbook reflects our field’s growing understanding of the importance of design scholarship to inform practice by including design case chapters. These changes for this edition of the Handbook are intended to bring educational technology research into the broader framework of educational research by elaborating on the role instructional design and technology plays as a scholarly discipline in addressing education’s increasingly complex issues. Provides comprehensive reviews of new developments in educational technology research and design practice. Includes concrete examples to guide future research and practice in the ways emerging technologies can be used to solve educational problems. Contains extensive references furnished to guide readers to the most recent research and design practice in the field of instructional design and technology.
