Following suit, research on alliances has blossomed, concentrating on the various forms alliances take, the reasons of their existence, and increasingly embracing questions of alliance management and governance tasks. However, most contributions which address the alliance governance problem are yet rather vague and selective in their conception of alliance governance structures as well as the factors which influence their suitability. The aim of this book is to further advance our understanding of alliance governance and to provide recommendations on the problem of alliance governance design. Following the configurational approach, Sascha Albers develops a comprehensive model of alliance governance systems. He identifies relevant structural and instrumental design parameters and analyzes major contingency factors, including member firms' cultures and alliance experience, number of alliance partners, and trust, which impact the design parameters' suitability. He finally deducts five configurations, or ideal types, of alliance governance systems which can be regarded as blueprints for the practitioner and as platform for further research for the alliance scholar. Potential readership includes scholars of strategic management and organization theory, interested students in these areas as well as practitioners involved in formulating and implementing alliance strategies.

Book excerpt: A strategic alliance has been one of the core methods for expanding the business of many corporations in terms of geographic presence, business domain, and technological scope. The strategic alliance includes many different types of partnerships, including licensing in and out, joint product development, minority equity investments, joint ventures, and mergers and acquisitions. These alliances involve many distinctive participants inside and outside a corporation and for this reason, the alliance-forging process and management tend to be quite complicated for systematic analysis. Therefore in this thesis I employ system architecture frameworks to analyze strategic alliances in a systematic way from a holistic viewpoint. I apply an object process methodology (OPM) to understand interactions among different participants during the process of forging alliances, analyze the upstream and downstream influences, and finally adopt a holistic framework to illustrate detailed interactions during the process. The alliance process basically consists of four distinctive phases: formulation, partner selection, negotiation, and management. Comparing the results with the DuPont case, I realized that the alliance management phase should be augmented for more comprehensive management. Strategic alliances and mergers and acquisitions are discussed in the corporate-level context. They have many driving forces in common at the level of corporate context, but in mergers and acquisitions the economic conditions are more critical components than others during a strategy- formulation phase.

Book excerpt: The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of managers' participation in costing system design on their perceived contributions to process improvement. Drawing on the literature on business process management, participative decision making and self-determination theory, we propose that participation in costing system design fosters managers' perceived contributions to process improvement through their autonomous motivation for cost management and their perceived usefulness of cost information. Questionnaire data obtained from 170 Belgian managers were used to test the proposed model. The results suggest that participation in costing system design increases managers' autonomous motivation for cost management and enhances their perceived usefulness of cost information. Managers' perceived usefulness of cost information is, in turn, positively associated with their perceived contributions to process improvement. The effect of managers' autonomous motivation for cost management on their perceived contributions to process improvement is, however, not significant. Taken together, our findings imply that contributions to process improvement mainly emerge through informational mechanisms rather than motivational mechanisms triggered by the participation process.
