Book Dormancy of Heterodera Glycines in Missouri

Download or read book Dormancy of Heterodera Glycines in Missouri written by Jyh-herng Yen and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-year study was conducted in field microplots to determine the relative importance of soybean phenology and soil temperature on the induction of dormancy in soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines. Infested microplots were planted with near-isogenic soybean lines (selections from 'Clark') differing for date of maturity. Eggs of H. glycines, extracted from cysts collected monthly from each microplot, were used in hatching tests and bioassays to determine dormancy. Egg-hatching and J2-infectivity rates decreased beginning in July, indicating dormancy induction. Hatching rates were not related to soil temperature, and did not differ consistently among soybean isolines. The monophasic changes in all nematode responses (hatching, infectivity, and reproduction) with peak mid-summer rates suggest that H. glycines produces one primary generation per year under central Missouri conditions. Changes in hatching rates and the timing of minimum and maximum rates suggested that H. glycines eggs exhibit more than one type of dormancy. Trehalose accumulation occurs during dormancy induction in other nematode species, and its use as a marker for dormancy of H. glycines was investigated in a two-year field microplot experiment. Changes in the glucose, trehalose, total protein, and glycogen contents og eggs retained within cysts were monitored monthly. Trehalose accumulation was highly negatively correlated with soil temperature. Thus, trehalose accumulation is not a useful marker for dormancy in contrast to dormancy induction, which was temperature-independent.

Book Pest Management in Soybean

Download or read book Pest Management in Soybean written by L.G. Copping and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third in a series of volumes on major tropical and sub-tropical crops. These books aim to review the current state of the art in management of the total spectrum of pests and diseases which affect these crops in each major growing area using a multi-disciplinary approach. Soybean is economically the most important legume in the world. It is nutritious and easily digested, and is one of the richest and cheapest sources of protein. It is currently vital for the sustenance of many people and it will play an integral role in any future attempts to relieve world hunger. Soybean seed contains about 17% of oil and about 63% of meal, half of which is protein. Modern research has developed a variety of uses for soybean oil. It is processed into margarine, shortening, mayonnaise, salad creams and vegetarian cheeses. Industrially it is used in resins, plastics, paints, adhesives, fertilisers, sizing for cloth, linoleum backing, fire extinguishing materials, printing inks and a variety of other products. Soybean meal is a high-protein meat substitute and is used in the developed countries in many processed foods, including baby foods, but mainly as a feed for livestock. Soybean (Glycine max), which evolved from Glycine ussuriensis, a wild legume native to northern China, has been known and used in China since the eleventh century Be. It was introduced into Europe in the eighteenth century and into the United States in 1804 as an ornamental garden plant in Philadelphia.

This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book on “Crop Protection Strategies under Climate Change Scenarios” provides the information on i) effects of climate variables [increased temperatures, elevated carbon dioxide levels, varying precipitation patterns and frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events (drought, cyclones, floods, etc.), and elevated levels of atmospheric pollutants (ozone, acid rain, and elevated ultraviolet B) on crop pests; ii) Impacts of climate change induced consequences (expansion of geographical distribution, increase in number of generations, increased overwintering survival, pest population dynamics and outbreaks, risk of introducing invasive alien species, crop-pest interactions, loss of ecological biodiversity, changes in phenology, increased incidence of insect vectored plant diseases, disruption of plant-pollinator interactions, reduced effectiveness of pest management strategies) on crop pests; iii) Development of modelling approaches to predict future pest change scenarios; and iv) Formulation of sustainable adaptation and mitigation pest management strategies including physical, cultural, chemical, biological, host resistance, and integrated methods under climate change scenarios. This book will be of immense value to scientific community involved in teaching, research and extension activities pertaining to pest management under climate change scenarios. The material in the book can be used for teaching post-graduate courses. The book can also serve as a very useful reference to policy makers and practicing farmers.
