Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book excerpt: This research studied the effects of riparian vegetation and channel morphology on aquatic habitat and the benthic macroinvertebrate community at the reach-level in agricultural ditches. We hypothesized that, compared to open canopy ditch reaches, forested reaches would improve habitat and food resource diversity, resulting in greater biological integrity of the macroinvertebrate community. Secondly, open canopy reaches with two-stage channel morphology (i.e., the presence of small floodplain "benches") would provide flow refugia, higher quality habitat and reduce the severity of erosion/deposition processes during flood events, which would positively effect the biological integrity of the macroinvertebrate community. Sites were selected in northwest Ohio and grouped according to following criteria 1) reaches with a forest canopy resulting from tree growth on both sides of the ditch and irrespective of channel morphology (Tree Group, n=7), 2) reaches with two-stage (i.e., bench) morphology and no tree growth on either bank (Bench Group, n=6) and 3) reaches with one-stage morphology (i. e., no bench development) and without tree growth on neither bank (Control Group, n=6). The Bench group demonstrated the highest quality substrate and habitat (measured through the Ohio EPA's Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index; QHEI) relative to the other groups. Habitat in the Bench group was affected by the dense grassy vegetation growing on the low, flat benches in the bottom of the ditches. Habitat quality of the Tree group was not different from that of the Bench or the Control groups in terms of the QHEI, however substrate had a significantly higher proportion of fine sediment (i.e., poor quality) than the Bench group (Mann-Whitney; p

Book excerpt: Woody vegetation encroachment has become a major threat to tallgrass prairie streams mainly because of fire suppression. This process converts prairie streams from open to closed canopy systems. The effects of these riparian changes are poorly understood, but the relative importance of basal resources presumably shifts from primarily autochthonous to allochthonous with increasing canopy cover, potentially altering macroinvertebrate functional structure and production. To assess the effects of woody vegetation encroachment on stream ecosystem structure and function, riparian trees were removed from two headwater stream reaches on the Konza Prairie Biological Station (KPBS) in eastern Kansas. Experimental stream reaches were compared to streams with naturally open and closed canopies before and after the manipulation. Riparian forest removal altered macroinvertebrate production and functional structure, but higher macroinvertebrate production in canopy removal reaches compared to naturally open reaches suggested natural conditions were not restored one year after riparian removal. However, macroinvertebrate communities in naturally open and canopy removal reaches became more similar after riparian removal. Functional structure, based on production, in naturally open and canopy removal reaches after riparian removal was dominated by scrapers (45-60% of total production), with similar proportions of collector-gatherers (12-26%) and predators (15-25%). The plight of the spring/summer, and fall Snake River chinook salmon has aroused interest in fish habitat and the effects of riparian plants on fish habitat. This study was launched to determine if riparian plant species assemblages could be used as an efficient assessor of fish habitat and the effects of land use on riparian areas and streams in the Payette National Forest in Central Idaho. Five plant communities are described. Stream attributes of streambank undercut width and streambank stability were different between communities, while fish habitat type and substrate particle size were not. Management implications for each plant community type were drawn from the current condition of the riparian area and stream attributes.
