Book excerpt: Everyone on Planet Earth, with even the most basic understanding of mathematics, owes a great debt to Pythagoras, the great Greek geometrician of the ancient world whose mathematical maxims have informed the constructive arm of man for over two millennia and whose spiritual and esoteric axioms have enlightened all great initiatory mystery schools since his incarnation. Through this book, The Golden Verses of Pythagoras, Pythagoras' surviving disciples introduced his science and philosophy to the world. These teachings helped to establish underground mystery schools throughout the Mediterranean world, with fragments of the work continuing to influence modern mystery schools and fraternal orders, such as Freemasonry, even today. The teachings contained in this book have sparked curiosity and divine insight in the minds of men for two thousand years. In that spirit, the Masonic Publishing Company presents the Golden Verses of Pythagoras, such that the lessons contained may once again take root in the geometer's mind and guide his hand in all its works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of Mozart’s strong ties to Freemasonry and how its principles profoundly shaped his musical work • Reveals how Mozart structured his music on Masonic ritual and ceremony to provide a musical lexicon of Masonic symbols • Shows that Freemasonry plays the same role in Mozart’s work as Lutheran Christianity plays in that of Bach Thanks to recently discovered documents, we now have a fuller picture of the esoteric influences on the life and work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Musicologist Jacques Henry shows that the Masonic influence on Mozart goes beyond those pieces, such as The Magic Flute, that fulfilled a ritual purpose for the composer. His works actually provide a complete musical lexicon of Masonic symbols inspired by the principles of the craft and the spirit of the Masonic quest. Mozart constructed his Masonic compositions by creating auditory correspondences to the symbols present in the rituals, choosing keys and tempos that transpose their content into harmony. His understanding of the use of symbol allowed him to create music that would lead the listener into a harmony that transcended earthly existence. A number of musicologists believe that the place of the Masonic spiritual vision in Mozart’s work is comparable to that held by Lutheran Christianity in the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. Mozart wed his deep understanding of music to the esoteric wisdom he gained as a Freemason. He shows that when we lose ourselves in the expression of pure harmony, it is the same as the symbol being lost in what it symbolizes. Jacques Henry provides a rigorous and original analysis of Mozart’s works that reveals their inner meaning as shaped by the composer’s profound embrace of the spiritual principles of Freemasonry.

Book The Life and Philosophy of Pythagoras

Download or read book The Life and Philosophy of Pythagoras written by Manly Hall and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHILE Mnesarchus, the father of Pythagoras, was in the city of Delphi on matters pertaining to his business as a merchant, he and his wife, Parthenis, decided to consult the oracle of Delphi as to whether the Fates were favorable for their return voyage to Syria. When the Pythoness (prophetess of Apollo) seated herself on the golden tripod over the yawning vent of the oracle, she did not answer the question they had asked, but told Mnesarchus that his wife was then with child and would give birth to a son who was destined to surpass all men in beauty and wisdom, and who throughout the course of his life would contribute much to the benefit of mankind. Mnesarchus was so deeply impressed by the prophecy that he changed his wife's name to Pythasis, in honor of the Pythian priestess. When the child was born at Sidon in Phoenicia, it was--as the oracle had said--a son. Mnesarchus and Pythasis named the child Pythagoras, for they believed that he had been predestined by the oracle.

Book excerpt: The world of Freemasonry exerts a powerful influence on the modern imagination. In an age when perceived notions of history are being increasingly questioned and re-examined it is perhaps inevitable that secretive societies such as the Freemasons find themselves at the center of considerable speculation and conjecture. To some they represent a powerful and shadowy elite who have manipulated world history throughout the ages, whilst to others they are an altogether more mundane and benign fraternal organization. Freemasonry today is a worldwide phenomenon that accepts membership from a diverse ethnic and religious range of backgrounds. Entry to Freemasonry requires a belief in a Supreme Being although it insists it does not constitute a religion in itself. The rituals and practices of Freemasonry have been viewed as variously obscure, pointless, baffling, sinister, and frightening. An intensely stratified and hierarchical structure underpins most Masonic orders whose activities are focused within meeting points usually termed as Lodges. Giles Morgan examines its historical significance (George Washington and Benjamin Franklin were both Masons) and its position and role in contemporary society.

Book excerpt: A large portion of the Egyptian philosophy and religion seems to have been constructed almost wholly upon the science of numbers; and we are assured by Kircher that everything in nature was explained on this principle alone. The Pythagoreans had so high an opinion of it, that they considered it to be the origin of all things, and thought knowledge of numbers to be equivalent to knowledge of God. The founder of the sect received his instructions in this science from the Egyptian priests; who taught him that, while the monad possesses the nature of the efficient cause, the dyad is merely a passive matter. A point corresponds with the monad, both being indivisible; and as the monad is the principle of numbers, so is the point of lines. A line corresponds with the dyad, both being considered by transition. In expressing their opinion of the Regular or Platonic bodies, the followers of Pythagoras argued that the world was made by God "in thought, and not in time;" and that He commenced His work in fire and the fifth element; for there are five figures of solid bodies which are termed mathematical. Earth was made of a cube, Fire of a pyramid, Air of an octahedron, Water of an icosahedrons, the Sphere of the Universe of a Dodecahedron. And the combinations of the monad, as the principle of all things, are thus deduced. From the monad came the indeterminate dyad; from them came numbers; from numbers, points; from points lines; from lines, superficies; from superficies, solids; from these, solid bodies whose elements are four, viz., fire, water, air, earth; of all of which, under various transmutations, the world consists.

Book excerpt: The three fixed lights, or windows, subsequently exchanged for our lesser luminaries, were explained one hundred and fifty years ago to signify " the three Persons, Father, Son, Holy Ghost ; " and were used to find out the meridian, " when the sun leaves the south, and breaks in at the west window of the Lodge." While the " mossy bed," the ancient signs of disgust and recognition, as well as the primitive name of a Master Mason, are equally obscure at the present day; having been swept away, along with the original method of characterising chemical bodies by symbols, as being no longer necessary to the system. Even the Masonic cipher, of which our brethren of the last century were justly proud, is now in abeyance, if not obsolete, for it is considered by the English fraternity a useless appendage that may be well dispensed with. In the formula of opening the Lodge before the union of ancient said modem Masons in 1813, it was announced by the chair that " all swearing, whispering, and unmannerly or profane conversation," were strictly prohibited during Lodge hours, under such penalty as " the Bylaws shall inflict or a majority think proper." And the reason publicly assigned for this prudent course was, " that the business of the Lodge being thus happily begun might be conducted with decency, and closed in harmony and brotherly love". This formula was discontinued at the above-mentioned period, and a new form substituted, which brought the Christian tendency of the Order more prominently before the Lodge.

Book The Path of Freemasonry

Download or read book The Path of Freemasonry written by Mark Stavish and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Shares the history and meaning of Freemasonry and its symbols • Offers thoughtful explorations of different areas of Masonic experience, drawing on esoteric doctrines and paralleling them with experiences found in daily life • Provides simple exercises and practices to help internalize and personalize the lessons presented, including dreamwork, journaling, meditation, and prayer In this practical guide, Mark Stavish details the spiritual lessons and rituals of Freemasonry as a step-by-step path of spiritual development and self-improvement for both Masons and non-Masons, men and women, alike. He explores the history and meaning of Freemasonry and its symbols--from its origins in the Temple of Solomon to the Medieval craft guilds to the Renaissance--and explains how the Craft promotes personal growth through the symbolic building of self and an inner Temple of Wisdom in much the same way that Masonry’s rituals symbolize the building of Solomon’s Temple in accordance with the mystical architectural instructions of Hiram. Drawing on esoteric doctrines, including the Qabala, alchemy, sacred geometry, John Dee’s angelic magic, and the secrets of the Gothic cathedral builders, each chapter addresses an area of the Masonic experience, paralleling them with experiences each of us finds in our own lives. The author provides simple practices to help internalize and personalize the lessons presented, including dreamwork, journaling, meditation, prayer, and understanding sacred architecture. The author also examines the crafting and use of the spiritual and symbolic tools of Freemasonry, such as the trestle or tracing board and the Chamber of Reflection. Providing the tools to make the Craft an initiatic experience of self-improvement, the author shows that, ultimately, the Masonic experience is the human quest for self-realization and self-expression, so that we each may find our place in the Temple of Wisdom.
