Book Influence of Early Lactation Energy Balance on Postpartum Interval Milk Production and Metabolic Hormone Concentration in Thin Primiparous Beef Heifers

Download or read book Influence of Early Lactation Energy Balance on Postpartum Interval Milk Production and Metabolic Hormone Concentration in Thin Primiparous Beef Heifers written by David Leon Lalman and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research has firmly documented that body condition at calving has a major influence on reproductive success of beef cattle. One major contributing factor to reduced reproductive efficiency is extended postpartum interval to first estrus or luteal activity (PPI). Unfortunately, due to circumstances that may be beyond the control of the producer, cows and heifers often calve in thin body condition. Other research has led to the recommendation that thin cows be managed to gain body condition during early lactation. However, increasing nutrient intake also increases milk production as well as input costs. Two consecutive experiments were conducted to determine the relationship of rate of body condition change to PPI in first calf heifers that received low nutrient intake during late gestation. Although heifers were treated the same during late gestation, body condition score at calving (CCS) continued to have a greater influence on PPI than did condition score change after calving (CSCH). Increasing body condition during early lactation resulted in reduced PPI, however, few heifers returned to cyclic activity before 90 d postpartum. Maximum reduction in PPI occurred with 1.5 units increase in body condition score (BCS) in 90 d. No additional benefit was gained by increasing more than 1.5 units BCS. In the second trial, the relationships of energy intake and energy balance to milk yield, milk composition and metabolic hormone concentration were investigated. Higher milk production at d 30 postpartum was associated with extended PPI and higher CCS was associated with lower milk production. Low energy intake and (or) body condition loss was associated with a rapid decline in milk production. Greater energy intake delayed peak milk production and resulted in an increase in energy required for milk production as well as an increase in milk protein composition. Greater gains in body condition score were associated with shorter PPI, greater serum concentration of insulin, insulin-like growth factor I and lower serum concentration of growth hormone. Increasing body condition score during early lactation can reduce PPI, but evidence supports that inherent metabolic efficiency is more important in determining PPI.

Book Effects of Pre partum and Post partum Bolus Injections of Trace Minerals on Performance of Beef Cows and Calves Grazing Native Range

Download or read book Effects of Pre partum and Post partum Bolus Injections of Trace Minerals on Performance of Beef Cows and Calves Grazing Native Range written by Lauren Rae Mundell and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our objective was to evaluate the effects of pre- and post-partum bolus injections of a trace mineral solution on beef cow reproductive performance, body weight (BW) change, and body condition score (BCS) change and on performance of suckling calves. Mature beef cows (n = 460; initial BW = 497± 89 kg, initial BCS = 5.4± 0.74) were stratified by BCS, parity, and predicted calving date and assigned randomly to 1 of 2 treatments: 1) subcutaneous trace mineral (TM) injection containing 15 mg/mL Cu, 5 mg/mL Se, 10 mg/mL Mn, and 60 mg/mL Zn or 2) subcutaneous injection of physiological saline (SA). Injections were administered to cows (1 mL / 90 kg BW) 105 days before the first projected calving date and again 30 days before fixed-time AI. Calves received the same treatment as their dams and were injected (1 mL / 45 kg BW) at birth and again at 71± 21 days of age. Cows grazed native pastures for the duration of the study; trace mineral supplements and white salt were available to all cattle ad libitum before and during the study. Ovulation was synchronized using a 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR protocol and cows were inseminated 60 to 64 hours after CIDR removal. Cows were exposed to fertile bulls for natural-service breeding 10 days after AI for 35 to 50 days. Conception to AI and final pregnancy rate were assessed 36 days after AI with ultrasound and 120 days after AI via rectal palpation. Change in BW and BCS from initiation of the study to calving and from AI to weaning did not differ (P [equal to or greater than] 0.15) between TM and SA cows. Conversely, TM cows had greater (P = 0.04) BCS increase than SA cows between calving and AI. Calf BW at birth, ADG, and age-adjusted weaning BW did not differ (P [equal to or greater than] 0.36) between treatments. Proportion of cows with estrus cycles 17 and 8 days before ovulation synchronization was similar (P [equal to or greater than] 0.51) between treatments. Conception to AI was greater (P = 0.05) for cows receiving TM (60.2%) than for cows receiving SA (51.2%); however, overall pregnancy did not differ (P = 0.24) between treatments and averaged 92%. Under the conditions of our study, pre- and post-partum TM injections improved conception to fixed-time AI by beef cows.

Book Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle

Download or read book Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle written by Subcommittee on Beef Cattle Nutrition and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-05-16 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As members of the public becomes more concious of the food they consume and its content, higher standards are expected in the preparation of such food. The updated seventh edition of Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle explores the impact of cattle's biological, production, and environmental diversities, as well as variations on nutrient utilization and requirements. More enhanced than previous editions, this edition expands on the descriptions of cattle and their nutritional requirements taking management and environmental conditions into consideration. The book clearly communicates the current state of beef cattle nutrient requirements and animal variation by visually presenting related data via computer-generated models. Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle expounds on the effects of beef cattle body condition on the state of compensatory growth, takes an in-depth look at the variations in cattle type, and documents the important effects of the environment and stress on food intake. This volume also uses new data on the development of a fetus during pregnancy to prescribe nutrient requirements of gestating cattle more precisely. By focusing on factors such as product quality and environmental awareness, Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle presents standards and advisements for acceptable nutrients in a complete and conventional manner that promotes a more practical understanding and application.

Book Evaluating the Effects of Pre and Post AI Nutrition on Embryo Quality and Reproductive Efficiency of Beef Cattle

Download or read book Evaluating the Effects of Pre and Post AI Nutrition on Embryo Quality and Reproductive Efficiency of Beef Cattle written by Ricardo P. Arias and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of nutrition during late gestation and after insemination, as well as the effects of energy reserves on reproductive function of the beef female and subsequent growth and reproductive function of their offspring were investigated. The aims of this research were: 1) to evaluate how a change in nutritional intake immediately after insemination would affect pregnancy success and concentrations of hormonal mediators, IGF-I and progesterone, 2) to determine the influence that postpartum energy reserves have on embryo viability, early embryonic development, and embryo quality, and 3) to evaluate the impact that maternal protein supplementation of irrigated meadow grass hay during the last trimester of gestation has on cow BW and BCS, calf birth and weaning BW, conception rates of heifer offspring, and feedlot performance of steer offspring. Findings from Chapter III show that suppression in nutritional plane of heifers during the 21-d following AI has a negative impact on heifer performance, circulating concentrations of IGF-I, and AI pregnancy rates. Thus, it is biologically beneficial to ensure that heifers maintain their pre-breeding plane of nutrition during the 21-d following AI. Chapter IV presents evidence that cows with BCS 5.4 tend to produce more total embryos after a superovulation program compared to cows BCS 4.3. Additionally, peripheral concentrations of IGF-I were greatest in cows with a BCS 5.4, which may be an indicator of a more suitable environment in the uterus for further development of an embryo. In Chapter V, cows supplemented with protein during the last trimester of gestation had a greater BW gain and BCS change by calving time. Weaning BW of calves born to protein supplemented dams was greater when compared to calves from non-supplemented cows. There was a trend for pregnancy rates of heifers born supplemented dams to be 16 percentage points greater (95% vs. 79%). And although dam supplementation did not seem to affect intakes, gains, feed efficiency or carcass characteristics on the male progeny in this study, advantages have been observed other peer-reviewed research studies that support the concept that late gestation supplementation can have an impact subsequent progeny.

Download or read book Effects of Protein Supplementation on Reproductive Performance of Fall Calving Cows and Prenatal and Postnatal Growth and Carcass Characteristics of Calves written by Kyle James Mclean and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fall calving cows were used to determine the effects of protein supplementation on reproduction, and growth and carcass characteristics of calves. Cows were individually supplemented from mid-November to mid-March for four years with either a control diet (Con; 1.82 kg/d of 38 % CP) or low diet (L; 0.2 kg/d of 8% CP). During each year, cows were reassigned dietary treatments according to calving date and BCS, with half of Con and L cows remaining on the same diets as the previous year and the other half assigned to the other diet. Cows were exposed to bulls for 60 d beginning December 1. Statistical analyses were performed with a 2 x 2 factorial design with PROC GLM and PROC FREQ. Cows on Con diets lost less BW from November to January compared with L cows (-29.8 ± 2.8 and -49.7 ± 2.8 kg, P
