This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Plautus on the Comedies of Ben Jonson: A Thesis for the Doctorate in Philosophy There must be some reason for this general imitation of the Plautine comedies, some merit in the plays them selves. That a writer Of Ben Jonson's acknowledged classical tastes and tendencies 2 should turn to the greatest comedian the ancient Roman world could pro duce for assistance, ' is not strange; but it is remark able that he should have made direct adaptation of portions of the Plautine comedies in various instances, and that other authors also, as Shakespeare and Field ing, who were not classicists naturally, should turn to Plautus for ideas. This can be accounted for by estab lishing three facts, i. E.: 1, that the Plautine comedies were highly esteemed and popular 2, that the literary style of Plautus was such as to appeal directly to the people 3, that these comedies by continued presenta tion on the stage had grown to be familiar to the pub lic. As such proof is material and precedent to any statement of direct influence which Plautus may have had on Ben Jonson's comedies, it will be advantageous to consider these questions. Book Plautus and the English Renaissance of Comedy

Download or read book Plautus and the English Renaissance of Comedy written by Richard F. Hardin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteenth-century discovery of Plautus’s lost comedies brought him, for the first time since antiquity, the status of a major author both on stage and page. It also led to a reinvention of comedy and to new thinking about its art and potential. This book aims to define the unique contribution of Plautus, detached from his fellow Roman dramatist Terence, and seen in the context of that European revival, first as it took shape on the Continent. The heart of the book, with special focus on English comedy ca. 1560 to 1640, analyzes elements of Plautine technique during the period, as differentiated from native and Terentian, considering such points of comparison as dialogue, asides, metadrama, observation scenes, characterization, and atmosphere. This is the first book to cover this ground, raising such questions as: How did comedy rather suddenly progress from the interludes and brief plays of the early sixteenth century to longer, more complex plays? What did “Plautus” mean to playwrights and readers of the time? Plays by Shakespeare, Jonson, and Middleton are foregrounded, but many other comedies provide illustration and support.

Book The Ben Jonson Encyclopedia

Download or read book The Ben Jonson Encyclopedia written by D. Heyward Brock and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friend and rival of Shakespeare, Ben Jonson was one of the most learned and interesting men of his age. Throughout his fascinating life, he served not only as a bricklayer but also a soldier, an adventurer, an actor, a poet, and a playwright. The breadth of his experiences, acquaintances, friends, and enemies was legendary, and his literary canon is equally as diverse. The Ben Jonson Encyclopedia covers in detail the works, life, and times of this seminal figure of the English Renaissance. The cross-referenced entries include summaries of all Jonson’s plays, masques, and entertainments, as well as sketches of Jonson’s friends, enemies, patrons, disciples, actors, and fellow writers. In addition, the book identifies historical figures, mythological characters, and classical authors, as well as Jonson’s contemporaries and London place names mentioned in the works. Individuals who danced or participated in the masques and entertainments or tournaments for which Jonson wrote speeches are noted, as are the main actors known to have acted in the plays. All major scholars—from Jonson’s own day until the twenty-first century—who have commented on Jonson or his works are also included. An extensive bibliography completes this invaluable scholarly reference tool. Because of Jonson’s centrality to—and influence in and beyond—his age, this encyclopedia provides a dynamic, unparalleled vision of the English Renaissance literary scene. Capturing the depth and breadth of Jonson’s understanding of early Modern England, The Ben Jonson Encyclopedia will be especially useful for students, librarians, and academics interested in the literary and cultural scene from 1500 to 1650.

Book Imitation and Contamination of the Classics in the Comedies of Ben Jonson

Download or read book Imitation and Contamination of the Classics in the Comedies of Ben Jonson written by Tom Harrison and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the influence of classical authors on Ben Jonson’s dramaturgy, with particular emphasis on the Greek and Roman playwrights and satirists. It illuminates the interdependence of the aspects of Jonson’s creative personality by considering how classical performance elements, including the Aristophanic ‘Great Idea,’ chorus, Terentian/Plautine performative strategies, and ‘performative’ elements from literary satire, manifest themselves in the structuring and staging of his plays. This fascinating exploration contributes to the ‘performative turn’ in early modern studies by reframing Jonson’s classicism as essential to his dramaturgy as well as his erudition. The book is also a case study for how the early modern education system’s emphasis on imitative-contaminative practices prepared its students, many of whom became professional playwrights, for writing for a theatre that had a similar emphasis on recycling and recombining performative tropes and structures.
