Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Philosophy of Freemasonry These lectures were first delivered before the Harvard Chapter of the Acacia Fraternity in the schoolyear 1911-12, except the lecture on Krause, which was first delivered before the Grand Lodge of Nebraska in 1903, and was originally printed in the proceedings of that body for that year. Afterwards all five lectures, revised and corrected, were delivered before the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts in 1914, and appear in its proceedings for that year. In the latter form they were published in successive numbers of The Builder, from January to May, 1915, from which they are now reprinted. From the foregoing statement it will appear that in their original form all but one of the lectures were prepared for students who had come fresh from a certain general philosophical training in college. Undoubtedly the reader who has not had such a training will find them somewhat difficult. But it is believed the difficulty is involved necessarily in the subject itself. There is no more a popular road to learning than there was once a royal road. Learning which costs no effort is worth no more than it costs. The perennial problems of the nature of reality, the conduct of life, and the relation of the human individual to the universe cannot be stated in words of one syllable, nor can solutions of them which are of enough value to justify the time spent in achieving them, be ladled out as predigested food for mental digestions too weak to assimilate the ideas of Krause and Pike undiluted and untempered. Book excerpt: Scholarship on Ludwig van Beethoven has long addressed the composer0́9s affiliations with Freemasonry and other secret societies in an attempt to shed new light on his biography and works. Though Beethoven0́9s official membership remains unconfirmed, an examination of current scholarship and primary sources indicates a more ubiquitous Masonic presence in the composer0́9s life than is usually acknowledged. Whereas Mozart0́9s and Haydn0́9s Masonic status is well-known, Beethoven came of age at the historical moment when such secret societies began to be suppressed by the Habsburgs, and his Masonic associations are therefore much less transparent. Nevertheless, these connections surface through evidence such as letters, marginal notes, his Tagebuch, conversation books, books discovered in his personal library, and personal accounts from various acquaintances. This element in Beethoven0́9s life comes into greater relief when considered in its historical context. The 0́−new path0́+ in his art, as Beethoven himself called it, was bound up not only with his crisis over his incurable deafness, but with a dramatic shift in the development of social attitudes toward art and the artist. Such portentous social changes cannot be accounted for through the force of Beethoven0́9s personality, or the changing role of the Viennese nobility. Many social forces were at work in the late Enlightenment period, but within this context Freemasonry assumed special importance for Beethoven. I attempt to show in this thesis that Beethoven0́9s musical concepts were deeply enriched through the influence of Freemasonry and other types of ancient philosophical and esoteric thought. The composer integrated these concepts into his world view as well as his music. Evidence of this philosophical/musical synthesis can be seen by comparing his personal writings with certain of his compositions that reflect such thought and attitudes. Three works are examined from this point of view: the Bagatelle, op. 119, No. 7, the Piano Sonata in C minor, op. 111, and the String Quartet in C-sharp minor, op. 131.
