This stereotype depicts Asian Americans as well educated, intelligent, competitive, hardworking and successful career women. Using focus group discussions, this study recalls perceptions and explores potential effects of model minority stereotypes in prime-time television among women of varied racial-ethnic backgrounds. The study finds that both Asian/Asian American women and women from other racial-ethnic groups confirm belief in the model minority media stereotype in prime-time television. The selfperception and others' perception of Asian American women as a model minority imposes stress on Asian/Asian American women in terms of gender role, academic performance and career achievement. Additionally, perceptions toward the model minority media stereotype among women of varied racial-ethnic backgrounds influence intergroup relations, interracial contact and evaluation of the model minority media image. Implications indicate that the model minority media stereotype has both positive and negative influences on Asian/Asian American women and other racial-ethnic groups. The study suggests that American media can increase the frequency and diversity of Asian American women's media representation to reduce the negative societal influence of one-dimensional media stereotypes.

East Asian countries like Japan, Korea, and China are the biggest markets. Although each of these countries has local beauty standards, the global beauty industry imposes western beauty standards on individuals in those countries. This affects not only Asians in Asian countries, but also Asian Americans who are thought to be somehow foreign and, therefore, underrepresented in the U.S. media. Moreover, some Asians and Asian Americans take this for granted and unconsciously adopt western beauty standards into their routine beautification practices. Asians' and Asian Americans' beautification practices function as their habitus to conform to western beauty standards. In this research, I conduct qualitative semi-structured interviews with six Japanese and six Asian American female students in the University of Mississippi Oxford campus to understand how beauty standards in society are recognized among Asians and Asian Americans, how they adopt the western beauty standards into their daily lives, and how they form their identity as Asians. The data suggests two main findings. First, Japanese participants are segregated from white Americans by comparing them as "foreigners" or "Americans," whereas Asian Americans differentiate themselves by their ethnic identities. Another finding is that Japanese participants view beautification practices as an obligation for adults, but Asian American participants proceed to the practices for their leisure. They certainly feel small eyes or lower nose bridges are unattractive that are stereotypical Asian facial features media depicts. However, both Japanese and Asian American participants do not sense their connection to western beauty standards when they proceed to beautification practices.

Book excerpt: Asian Americans are becoming one of the largest growing minority groups in the United States, almost surpassing the Latinx community. Asian Americans, however, are rarely ever represented in Hollywood films and are limited to stereotypical roles. Asian American actors have a difficult time finding roles playing characters that are three-dimensional and complex. While both Asian American men and women face this challenge, it seems that in Hollywood films and television shows, Asian American males are even less represented than females and are typically portrayed as the quiet nerd, sexy doctor, martial arts expert, or the villain. These media stereotypes impact how we view Asian American men, and some buy into these problematic portrayals. Through the use of primary sources, such as films and personal interviews, and analysis of previous academic studies, this project seeks to uncover and dispel myths about Asian American masculinity. This research offers important historical context, explaining how the concept of the Yellow Peril plays a key role in Hollywood's problematic representations of Asian Americans in film. The paper also dissects the model minority stereotype and shows how the pressure Asian American men face to conform to this stereotype-along with dynamics of white hegemonic masculinity-create negative consequences and psychological effects. Ultimately, my analysis reveals the complex dynamics of Asian American masculinity, uncovers the harm of stereotypes, and hopes to inspire more progressive media portrayals of Asian Americans in the future.

Book excerpt: With hate crimes on the rise and social movements like Black Lives Matter bringing increased attention to the issue of police brutality, the American public continues to be divided by issues of race. How do adolescents and young adults form friendships and romantic relationships that bridge the racial divide? In The Company We Keep, sociologists Grace Kao, Kara Joyner, and Kelly Stamper Balistreri examine how race, gender, socioeconomic status, and other factors affect the formation of interracial friendships and romantic relationships among youth. They highlight two factors that increase the likelihood of interracial romantic relationships in young adulthood: attending a diverse school and having an interracial friendship or romance in adolescence. While research on interracial social ties has often focused on whites and blacks, Hispanics are the largest minority group and Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial group in the United States. The Company We Keep examines friendships and romantic relationships among blacks, whites, Hispanics, and Asian Americans to better understand the full spectrum of contemporary race relations. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, the authors explore the social ties of more than 15,000 individuals from their first survey responses as middle and high school students in the mid-1990s through young adulthood nearly fifteen years later. They find that while approval for interracial marriages has increased and is nearly universal among young people, interracial friendships and romantic relationships remain relatively rare, especially for whites and blacks. Black women are particularly disadvantaged in forming interracial romantic relationships, while Asian men are disadvantaged in the formation of any romantic relationships, both as adolescents and as young adults. They also find that people in same-sex romantic relationships are more likely to have partners from a different racial group than are people in different-sex relationships. The authors pay close attention to how the formation of interracial friendships and romantic relationships depends on opportunities for interracial contact. They find that the number of students choosing different-race friends and romantic partners is greater in schools that are more racially diverse, indicating that school segregation has a profound impact on young people’s social ties. Kao, Joyner, and Balistreri analyze the ways school diversity and adolescent interracial contact intersect to lay the groundwork for interracial relationships in young adulthood. The Company We Keep provides compelling insights and hope for the future of living and loving across racial divides.
