This is a different approach to a traditional program where you would be required to complete a series of exercises a certain number of times a day for a set number of days each week. The trainer's manual outlines the principles of the LiFE program and provides a step-by-step guide for therapists and trainers to implement the program with their clients. It should be used in conjunction with the participant's manual so that the program is fully understood from both the trainer's and participant's perspectives.

The percentage of older adults living in rural areas is greater than the percentage living in urban areas. Rural residents experience a number of health disparities, including lower levels of physical activity. The purpose of this dissertation study was to examine the difference in amount and predictors of physical activity among rural- and urban-dwelling older adults in Wisconsin and to assess the effects of the neighborhood built environment (BE) on physical activity and physical function among rural- and urban-dwelling older adults in Wisconsin. This cross-sectional correlation study utilized data collected via the Survey of the Health of Wisconsin (SHOW). SHOW is a statewide, representative survey that collects information on residents' health and social determinants of health. T-tests and linear regression were used to determine differences in amount and predictors of physical activity. Moderated mediation path models were used to determine the effects of the BE on physical activity and physical function based on rural or urban location. In the regression models that controlled for potential confounders, rural residents had less time in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity. Age, high income, education, and Hispanic ethnicity were significant predictors of physical activity. In the moderated mediation path models, perceived access to fruits and vegetables was a significant indirect effect on physical function, mediated by physical activity, for urban older adults. Perceived safety from traffic and perceived neighborhood destinations had a significant positive direct effect on physical function for urban residents. Perceiving many interesting things to see in the neighborhood had a significant direct effect on physical function for rural residents. The physical activity estimates in this study matched the general trends of physical activity estimates for older adults and rural adults in other studies. The significant BE effects were also similar to other studies that explored associations between the BE and physical activity or physical function. This information will be important to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to effectively promote physical activity and plan for an increasingly aging population in rural areas.

Stepwise regression identified mobility and upper body strength as strong predictors of disability.

However, there are many barriers to physical activity among community-dwelling older adults. Retirement living may facilitate physical activity by reducing health, social, and environmental barriers for seniors. The purpose of this thesis was to: (1) quantify changes in physical activity and physical function over the transition to retirement living; (2) examine the relationship between participant characteristics and physical activity in retirement living; and (3) describe the relationship between change in physical activity and change in physical and cognitive function. Older adults on the wait-lists for or living in retirement living were recruited. Physical activity was assessed with the Actigraph activity monitor and the CHAMPS activity questionnaire. Physical function was measured with the Senior Fitness Test. Cognitive function was assessed with a 45-minute test battery that assessed a variety of cognitive domains. In this study, objectively measured physical activity decreased with the transition to retirement living; however, it appeared that intentional exercise increased while activities of daily living (ADLs) decreased. Additionally, endurance, agility, and strength improved after the transition. In retirement living, physical activity was positively associated with endurance, agility, and strength, as well as balance confidence, memory and executive function. However, change in physical activity over the transition to retirement living was not positively correlated with changes in physical or cognitive function. The results from this study, the first to prospectively follow older adults over the transition to retirement living, indicate that physical activity decreases due to a large drop in ADLs with the transition, though physical function appeared to improve. Future studies should expand the timeline used in this thesis to better understand change in physical activity and function. In addition, strategies to overcome the decrease in physical activity due to a drop in ADLs should be developed.

Book excerpt: Physical activity and nutrition are important modifiable lifestyle factors that are important for healthy aging. This thesis contains three studies in community-dwelling older adults (≥60 years) aimed to: (1) evaluate the use of a physical activity questionnaire to predict physical health; (2) compare dietary intake with physical health parameters in an affluent population, and; (3) improve metabolic and physical health parameters. The first study investigated whether relationships existed between a person's score on the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) questionnaire and health-related body composition, cardiovascular and blood, strength, and flexibility measurements. The only significant relationship was waist circumference (WC), where a minimum PASE score of ~140 predicted a favourable WC for males and ~120 predicted a favourable WC for females. This relationship may be used encourage older adults to become more physically active by increasing their PASE score to move their WC into a favorable range. The second study investigated the relationships between physical health parameters and nutrient intake from food and supplement use in a population with high socioeconomic status (SES), typically recruited for research at the University of Guelph. Results demonstrated that adults with high SES have a similar risk of nutrient inadequacies to Canadian population data, and supplement users do not have higher nutrient intake from food than non-users. Finally, adding vitamin D intake to a predictive model which included age, sex, and body mass index, improved the model's capacity to predict a participant's lean body mass. The final study investigated the effect of 12 weeks of omega-3 fish oil (O3FA; FO) and olive oil (placebo, PL) supplementation on metabolic and physical health parameters at rest and during exercise. Results demonstrated that O3FA, and not PL, intake increased metabolic rate and fat oxidation at rest (24% males, 16% females) and exercise (11%). The FO group also experienced a lowering of triglyceride levels, and diastolic blood pressure for the males. Finally, females had an increase in lean mass and functional capacity. Therefore, this thesis demonstrates that modifiable life factors, such as physical activity and diet, influence the healthy aging of older community-dwelling adults.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.
