Book THE INFLUENCE OF INDIAN THOUGHT ON THE THOUGHT OF THE WEST

Download or read book THE INFLUENCE OF INDIAN THOUGHT ON THE THOUGHT OF THE WEST written by Swami Ashokananda and published by Advaita Ashrama (A publication branch of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math). This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Vivekananda and the Universal Gospel is a biography of Swami Vivekananda written by the French Nobel Laureate Monsieur Romain Rolland. The book was written in the 1920s. The author was assisted, through correspondence, by Swami Ashokananda, who was at that time the editor of the English journal Prabuddha Bharata. However, in the life of Swami Vivekananda written by M. Rolland, it is evident that the author does not believe that India has had any role in shaping global thought and culture, and nor does he believe that the philosophy of the Upanishads has influenced Western thought in any way. As a rebuttal to M. Rolland’s views on the subject, Swami Ashokananda wrote an article, “The Influence of Indian Thought on the Thought of the West”, which was published serially in 1931 in the April, May, and June issues of Prabuddha Bharata. This article was later brought out in book form, but has been out of print for a long time. Advaita Ashrama, a publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, is happy to republish this title considering its great relevance even today. In one of his lectures delivered in India, Swami Vivekananda says: “The debt which the world owes to our motherland is immense... Like the gentle dew that falls unseen and unheard, and yet brings into blossom the fairest of roses, has been the contribution of India to the thought of the world. Silent, unperceived, yet omnipotent in its effect, it has revolutionized the thought of the world, yet nobody knows when it did so.” By a perusal of this booklet, we believe readers of today will be convinced of the undeniable Influence of Indian Thought on the Thought of the West.

Book Hindu Philosophy and Its Influence on Literature in the West and the East

Download or read book Hindu Philosophy and Its Influence on Literature in the West and the East written by Anjali Pathiyath and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis studies the influence that South Asian religion and literature have had on the Western imagination, the nature of this interaction, and how it stands in comparison to the interpretations prevalent in the local South Asian contexts. In particular, it looks at the nature of influence of Hindu philosophy in Western literature, and compares this with the way this philosophy has played its role in influencing literatures within the Indian subcontinent. The thesis attempts a close study of the nature of influence of specific Indian texts on Western literature and poetry, and compares this with how these works have in turn been interpreted in the culture that they belong to, and examines how these vastly different social and cultural contexts have shaped the way that these texts have been understood and interpreted. This thesis also examines what literary ideas and universal philosophies these “canonical” Oriental texts have inspired when divorced from their cultural contexts, and how these perceptions in turn may or may not contribute to the “exotic” idea of the Orient - a mythologizing of the Far East. For the purpose of this study, the focus on South Asian literature has been narrowed to Hindu literature and philosophy, and the thesis pays particular attention to the Hindu religious scriptures of the Bhagavad Gita, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, the Upanishads and in particular, South Indian Bhakti poetry. The thesis concludes that there is a need to understand Hindu philosophy in terms of a continued spectrum of thought processes and ideas, and as a confluence of traditions and belief systems. Through a comparative study of the Western and Eastern interpretations of this tradition, the thesis thus argues for the need for a more inclusive method of study that encompasses a more equal footing between the observer and the observed.
