A bilingual poet, he was an inventor of myth-rooted poetic language, a creator of prose genres, a formidable theoretical and literary critic, and a forerunner of present-day Polish poetry and of the theater of the absurd. Rochelle Stone’s study acquaints the English-speaking reader with Lesmian’s life and the magic of his work. Her translations of the quoted poems—rendered into English for the first time—reveal his innovative attitude toward language, the concreteness of his imagery, and his fantasticism. Her critical analysis of his poetics in the literary, historical, and philosophical context of his time shows him to be the most consistent Symbolist in Poland, and one whose esthetics correspond much more closely to those of the second generation of Russian Symbolists than to those of his own contemporary Polish scene. Book excerpt: A highly significant movement within the Silver Age, harlequinade did not surface in Russian high culture until the turn of the twentieth century, when it suddenly began to attract the close attention of symbolist authors. In the present work, an attempt is made to show that the proliferation of the new cultural idiom was indicative of the fundamental concerns of the time and intimately related to the development of artistic thought. Although the theme is considered in its cultural totality (visual arts, literature and drama), the work is focused on symbolist poetry. It provides a close analysis of the 'harlequinade' verse of Blok and Belyi - two leading figures of the movement, in whose writings the symbolist theory found its maturity and perfection. The poems in question are conceptually centred on the dialectical unity of self and other - one of the key-notes in the new symbolist outlook. This is traced at various levels of poetic representation: in the imagery system and the principles of text construction, in linguistic features and poetic devices employed by the authors. Special attention is given to the sound organization of the poems, which heightens considerably the semantic potential of the text.

It is often too readily assumed that a hundred years ago all leading thinkers as weil as the educated public were addicted to the cult of progress and ignored or minimized those trends of their times that paved the way for the catastrophes of the twentieth century. In the nineteenth century the intoxicating triumphs of modern science undeniably induced the general public to believe that pro gress was not an accident but a necessity and that evil and immo rality would gradually disappear. Yet fears, misgivings, and anxieties were not as exceptional in the nineteenth century as is often imagined. Such feelings were not restricted to a few dissenting philosophers and poets like Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, 'Dostoevsky, Baudelaire, and Nietzsche.
